At least this is much better than first reported.  I do wonder if all ships have same policy - it appears not.  Except for cruising - I think - about the only place I have to deal or not deal with smoke anymore is a casino (and poker tables were always N/S).  Like the land situation, it will have to take all cruise lines to restrict smoking to an enclosed ventilated room (like Churchills) for it to work and not adversely harm business.  On land, people got used to it.

If you think that Churchills is well ventilated then you have been on different ships than I have

According to Claudio our HGM the cdc agreement does not allow for Churchill’s or Amy similar smoking venue for crew. Churchill’s is closed now on the Ruby. The smoke from the casino has been horrific on deck 6 by guest services and even as far as the MDR entrance.

This CSO is over soon, then what will PCL do about the smoking?  How can they smoke so much in the casino, when it’s only when you are drinking or eating…

unmasking?

Just got off the Caribbean Princess yesterday and were in aft facing balcony C753 (awesome room and balcony by the way!!) and had little to no smoke smell the entire cruise.   I had read about this problem before hand and was concerned but was very happy we didn't have this experience.   We spent plenty of hours out on the balcony at different times of day and while in port.

I brought that point up when I was talking to the Guest Services Director on the Grand.  When I was on that ship a couple of weeks ago, he really had no answer about it.  Only that they were satisfying what the CDC wanted, about the masking in the Casino. So I suppose it’s not being enforced very well (MASKING) in the Casino.

So, it is very strange that only during this pandemic have any high seas forced the crew to smoke in the aft area. 🤨

I think it is because there is no more gathering in the crew bar allowed.  Just my assumption, though.

When we went to Vegas last year about this time, patrons were required to mask up inside the casinos unless they were smoking.  So, we saw someone light a cigarette and let it burn in the ashtray next to him.  If he was told to put on his mask, he'd simply point at the cigarette to say he was smoking.  Well, all that smoke just so he didn't have to mask.  Whatever!!

Anyway, I never really saw a crew or staff member onboard scold anyone for not wearing a mask onboard a cruise ship.  They've been put in a very tough position ... if it's a rule, people should just comply or stay home!

@Cruise Raider The following comment by @HaveDogWillTravel is what my comment was referring to:

"So for 13 days on the Ruby we had full run of the promenade from morning to night. Yesterday we started sailing back in 8 ft swells with high winds. The bow crew area can not be used so we’ve lost the aft again entirely. All day all night. I expect we will lose it again today in our 10 ft swells.
Luca the guest services manager said they were not going backwards but only a temporary change due to weather."

So, they do smoke on the bow except during these storms. My sarcasm enters when I say that storms have never forced the crew to the aft of the ship before.

I get it ... we were all the way aft on the Caribe deck back in the beginning of October.  It was such a lovely room but we, too, noticed the cigarette smoke.  I only mentioned it to the staff because I thought someone was out there smoking on their balcony and have seen the results of the Star fire years ago.  I really don't have the answer for what to do if it is the crew smoking.  I can't imagine wanting to take away their chance for some temporary stress relief.  It's a dilemma, for sure.

I agree, I just got off of a RCCL cruise.  They have a pretty good system, vaccinated people wear a wristband so you don’t have to wear a mask in a lot of venues. On the tender to Catalina a ship security guy  sat next to me so I asked if we could take our masks off. He said no, there isn’t enough fresh air in here. We looked over at three people across from us with no masks on and he just looked down on the ground. I don’t really care but if I can take it off legally I do. The captain came on the speaker on the ship and made comments about not masking but it wasn’t enforced by any crew that I saw.  It’s kind of a joke when you look at the rules but I follow them.

I am currently on the Grand Princess in a Baha deck aft facing balcony. I have been smelling cigarette smoke consistently on my balcony. At times it is not tolerable and I must leave my balcony at other times it is moderate and uncomfortable but tolerable. The aft promenade deck has been closed off for a crew smoking area.

I brought it to the attention my steward and then spoke to Sheila the guest services manager. She is a very caring and compassionate person. I told her that I understood there really was no other alternative at the moment for the crew given covid protocols…… department personnel don’t mix off duty increasing the need for the entire aft section, crew have variable schedules precluding set times for smoking, the front of the ship is far too windy to allow smoking…..and so on. I also realize as a 30 year smoker ( 20 years free of it now yeah!) how important smoking is for the crew. They work hard, they are away from their families, they have stress and long hours. I would not want them to be denied this outlet.

I would appreciate if you’ve sailed recently on the Grand or the Ruby (Sheila is going to get back to me but I believe the Ruby has also closed the aft for crew smoking) or as you sail on the upcoming cruises if you’d report back about the smell of smoke or lack of smoke on your balcony.

I would jus insist on a new cabin

Y’all know I’ve been a huge supporter of the safe restarting of cruising. I went in as the canary in the mine on that first US sailing.

I can forgive, oblige & comply with a lot of changes in these after times.

But the cigarette smoking by crew and passengers on the Ruby have made my last 2 days miserable.  I’ve posted a Live Photo of the seas these past 2 days.  I absolutely love sea days like this.

Because of cold weather (no one smokes in the outdoor areas ) and Churchill’s being closed the smoke pouring out of the casino is intolerable.  It permeates everywhere on deck 5,6 & 7…..piazza, vines, stores, MDR entrance, customer service desk, loyalty desk…. It’s impossible to enjoy any of these spaces.

It is utterly disgusting.

Top it off with the promenade being unavailable because of crew smoking.   I am done. Just done.

While the weather was good and the seas were smooth this wasn’t a problem. But really???? Since when do you count on THAT for a good experience?

The sea is what the sea is and the flipping intolerable consequences of accommodating smokers when it acts up is beyond what I care to bear.

I have CFAR insurance and will use it.

I hope the smokers can sustain Princess as I still own stocks.

Wouldn't really know as never go in.  I just presume it to be highly ventilated from past readings perhaps?

Usually the ventilation is such so that you can get the full "benefit" of smoking a cigarette without actually needing one.

I’ve got 8 cruises booked.  I can’t tolerate smoke. Very sad.
What is CFAR insurance?

CFAR = Cancel For Any Reason.  And I'm with you.  We have a 15 day cruise in an aft suite on the Ruby to Hawaii next November to celebrate our 50th anniversary.  My wife is very asthmatic and I cannot stand the smell of cigarette smoke.  Unless something changes we will definitely be cancelling the cruise.

@HaveDogWillTravel I really can feel your "pain". This smoking thing is just ridiculous. We booked 6 cruises on Princess with gusto for the next two years. Four are aft balconies. The other two are different locations due to traveling with friends/ family.

PLEASE, CC people... let's bombard Princess with this issue.

Thanks!

I am so sad to hear this.  I know you never complain for the sake of complaining or getting something free out of the deal.  I can only imagine it was pretty much intolerable when you say it was.  Sorry you had to experience that.
