March 2022 Update: HAL Dry Docks, Charters and Groups Onboard

Good morning and welcome to the Spring edition of Dry Docks, Charters and Groups.

The Dry Dock situation continues to be a puzzle.  As of today, Volendam and Zaandam have been in Cadiz for 3 weeks - considerably longer than the usual dry dock timeline.  Perhaps HAL got a good price for similar work to be done to the two ships at the same time and it is more efficient and cheaper to have them both worked on and out of the water simultaneously.

On the Charters front, there continues to be gaps in sailing schedules, but I cannot find any information on what is happening to the ships during those gaps.

I would expect a substantial increase in Group bookings over the coming months as the Groups find their appetite for cruising and HAL enjoys the benefits of a block booking and probably substantial deposit.

Please note that the sailings listed are taken from various sources so it is possible that the itinerary does not coincide with the currently published HAL itinerary.

But I thought there was a requirement that a ship be drydocked every 3 or 4 years.

If the shipyards are closed, hard to get the work done.

 

There are various requirements for drydocking, depending on the age of the ship. Anywhere from 30 months to 5 years. HAL tends to exceed the requirements,  usually putting the ships in about every 30 months.

Oosterdam's first sailing is next week.  May 8th.  Perhaps we will hear some news then.

@VMax1700 just got off the Koningsdam last week, went to the coffee chats and one person asked about the libraries, they mentioned that the plan was for Koningsdam to go into dry dock in March 2023 and that the microsoft office area, (where they used to have the classes, that they no longer have) that area is suppose to be a new library area for the ship.  I don't know the exact date in March 2023 for drydock.

Thank you, that is interesting information.

Current schedules show Koningsdam on a 35 day Hawaii, Tahiti and Marquesas sailing until March 25th, then two 7 day sailings before heading off on a 18 day Circle Hawaii.  So perhaps those 7 day sailings will be cancelled.
