The port area is essentially an outdoor mall...stores, a faux Mayan temple, retaurants, a large pool, real flamingos, aviary ($), dolphin experience ($), bars, a sandy area with loungers, and taxis lined up just inside the gate.

I was surprised at the shopping.  Comparable to cozumel in size

Lots of souvenir stuff. Artsy things. I think there was a Lush/Basin type store.  It's actually quite a good area. They also have the fish pedicures.

They have the standard souvenir stuff but it tends to be significantly more expensive than the same stuff in Cozumel (in some cases 2x or 3x the cost so shop around). One of the shops does have a guy that carves necklace pendants out of pesos. He is pretty skilled and competitively priced. If you go to town (about a 45 minute walk or a 5 minute taxi-ride) there is significantly more hand-made stuff (and much cheaper drinks).  

 

Costa Maya is really not a "shopping destination". That is what Cozumel is for. Figure there is 100x the number of stores in just the Cozumel down-town area as compared to Costa Maya.

Fish pedicures looked really interesting, but apparently, they are not very healthy or sanitary for people.
