ESTA for Alaskan Cruise

What nationality? For UK passport holders you need an esta entering USA either by ship or plane. Strangely for Canadian eTA you only need for entering by air not by ship. 

Transiting normally means a trip from one country to another with a stopover or transit in a third country for less than 24 hours

NO, you are going to the USA.  Alaska is the USA, and you will be going to multiple ports in the USA.  A transit is a layover.

Some Alaska cruises depart from Seattle (USA) while others depart from Vancouver (Canada).  As offered more details are required to answer your question.

Even when you cruise out of Vancouver you do need ESTA as all Alaskan ports are US. Immigration will take place at the port in Vancouver.

 

You also need eTA for Canada.
