Just how dressy are gala nights on HAL?

For Men 5% tux,  10% suit - 20% coat and tie - 50% jacket only - 25% collared shirt -

Women - Gowns 5% - Cocktail dresses 50% fancy pantsuits 45%

Wear whatever you want - no one else (except you) will care.

Only shorts and maybe jeans - will get you turned away.

When i go its slacks(khakis) and collared shirt.    Some people wear ties or jacket, a few tuxes.  But in my experience it is 80% slacks and shirt.    Women wear mostly pants and top.   You may get a wide range of answers here as each has their own preferences.

On Royal, Hal, Celebrity and Azamara, i never wear a tie or jacket even in specialty restaurants.  Ive never had a problem and never felt uncomfortable. I was always in the 80% group.

It's about a decade since HAL gala nights could be described as 'dressy'.  Shame really, but a sign of the times.  What other people wear doesn't really affect our enjoyment of a cruise, but we do try to maintain a standard which we think is appropriate for the occasion - and that no longer includes a tux  and posh frock. 🙂

In other words, don't worry about it.

Based on my most recent cruise, not very. There were people who didn't even bother to change out of their daywear.
However, there were plenty of people who did look nice, dressed up, and a few in formal wear.
If you want to dress up, with the female in fine jewelry, remember: your nice clothes like to go out and play, too.
