Agree - tours were still operating; it was the ones who were going to 'do their own thing' that got a shock. It is generally a wise move to book something if docking somewhere on a major holiday.

Queen Elizabeth is current parked next to us in Port Chalmers. She's heading up to Lyttelton next. Unfortunately the past track on Marine Traffic doesn't show if she went into the Fiordland sounds yesterday.

We weren't able to get into the sounds a few years ago on Silver Muse as it was considered too windy = lots of to and fro between captain and someone, and in the end we had to miss it (though as is always the case the wind dropped but we were already on the way to Burnie). it may have been a weather related thing? Gorgeous in Dunedin. A bit of a chilly breeze as we came off the ship around 10:30am but it was clam when we returned mid-afternoon. So far the weather sounds good to enter Fiordland.

QE skipped the Fiords yesterday - cruised a straight line from Melbourne to the south of Stewart Island, so not weather related.

Maybe same issue as the Coral with the hull, strange as never heard of NZ refusing ships in, unless weather related.

I suspect somebody in NZ must have had a closer look at the paperwork for these cruise ships.

Didn't Coral go to PNG recently? I wonder if that was when they picked up the snails but they weren't detected until recently. I hope none escaped the ship on 9 December - Fiordland waters might have been too cold for them though.

One could also hope the snails can't stand fresh water as the top 10 metres of the water there is fresh.

If they can't stand the fresh water, they could detach and drop down to the sea water inside the fiords. Something the locals would not be hoping for.
