Rare notscb Posted January 13, 2023 #1 Share Posted January 13, 2023 After reading another article about rear-facing balcony cruise soot, I was wondering if the new Carnival Ships experienced this problem at all or if anyone had experienced this issue on ships with newer designs? I had also wondered if the Carnival Freedom might have this issue given the temporary stack design. Anyone have the inside scoop?
Rare Eli_6 Posted January 13, 2023 #2 Share Posted January 13, 2023 I was on the top deck underneath the lido on Mardi Gras in a corner suite and did not notice this. But, then again, I haven't noticed this issue on any ship and have been on a rear balcony or in a corner room on at least 4 ships.
Rare notscb Posted January 13, 2023 Author #3 Share Posted January 13, 2023 That's good to know! I don't know if cruise lines have taken steps to avoid this problem somehow, but it seems like maybe they have.
Rare SRQbeachgirl Posted January 13, 2023 #4 Share Posted January 13, 2023 We were in an aft balcony on deck 10 of the Mardi Gras and did not have any soot.
Rare luv2kroooz Posted January 13, 2023 #5 Share Posted January 13, 2023 We have seen it on Vista class. It seems to present when winds are calm and the ship is moving slowly. The funnel was literally spitting ash all over the jogging track. The crew was trying hard to keep the track clean, but it really was hopeless
Rare mlshum Posted January 13, 2023 #6 Share Posted January 13, 2023 I have has this problem on older ships in an aft balcony. I don’t know about Mardi Gras but it’s possible the LNG fuel would produce less soot, I guess.
dallasdan Posted January 13, 2023 #7 Share Posted January 13, 2023 We had this happen on the Panorama last May. First time I had ever seen it. the crew came out and cleaned the Havana area right away. I am nut sure how quickly they cleaned the balconies above Havana.
Palmetto Pilot Posted January 13, 2023 #8 Share Posted January 13, 2023 We had a Premium Vista Balcony on the Magic and it was constantly covered in soot.

BTromboneFrack Posted January 14, 2023 #10 Share Posted January 14, 2023 It is probably not a problem on the Excel class ships because they are run by LPG and the pollution is greatly reduced with ships using that fuel source. We have been on a LOT of aft facing cabins on Conquest class ships and the Vista and have never notice a problem with soot or bad smells from the funnel. We were on the Celebration this past December, were docked next to another ship and the wind happened to be blowing our direction from that ship's funnel. It wasn't bad but it was noticeable.
CruiseHealing Posted January 14, 2023 #11 Share Posted January 14, 2023 We were on deck 8 on the Panorama last year. It happened on our cruise. Carnival sent a letter apologizing. No problems on the Havana. Not a big deal.
