I have done this on Celebrity for sure…various lines may differ.

The only time I’ve been able to use casino chips as tips is for tipping the wait and cashier staff.  Everywhere else, it’s a no go.  Even at the Customer Service dept.  When I’ve tried to cash in my chips towards the end of the cruise at Customer Service, they always told me I could only do that with the casino cashier.

Yeah now imagine cruises for 4 weeks.
and carrying 1.00 for tips for the trip. Lol.
well that’s what I’m doing now.   Out for 29 days.  Lol.

I just put packs of 50 or 100 in the safe.  Take out as needed daily, etc...easy.

That has always been my experience.

I have always asked when using a casino chip, if they can make it work.  I was in a cabana on Celebrity, realized I had only 3-4 dollars on me, but also had a $25 chip...they two folks that waited on me said no issue, they could easily exchange it.  I'm sure it varies by line and positions .

Don’t understand why anyone wants to make the crew’s life more difficult by insisting on giving them $2 bills?

Easy...the "giver" isn't intentionally trying to make things more difficult for the crew, given the "uniqueness" of the $2 bill, it is used as a tip in order to make the "giver" stand out in the eyes of the receiving crew member. It is nothing more than a way for the "giver" to call attention to him/her self. This is the same "trick" used by tipping in $1 coins instead of $1 bills.

Personally, I don't understand it. $2 won't even buy a soda anymore. It is a very low-level tip. If anything, it will just make the "giver" remembered as being cheap.

While I think you are correct in thinking that the tipper is hoping to be remembered by the crew member, I disagree about it being cheap. A two dollar tip on a ten dollar drink is an adequate tip.

On NCL, in your scenario, that would represent a $4 tip ($10 + 20% + $2 bill). Where I come from a 40% tip is beyond generous.

Given that a tip is already paid as it is included in the cost...whether the cruiser is on a drink package or not...the extra tip is, as noted, is simply a "pay attention to me" device.

Auto or mandatory gratuities have a way of messing up normal tipping practices.

Lolol.  Nothing difficult about it.  If the casino cashier gives out 2.00 bills they take 2.00 just as easy.

so why would the casino have brand new stacks of 2.00 bills to hand out.  🤷

I do the same thing.  I have stacks of 1’s. And 2’s.  And 5’s and 10’s.  And 100’s.

not sure of the point.     No one has to do what I do.  Just stating that the casino cashier has hundreds of them brand new.

🤷🤷. If they didn’t like having them on the ship.    Why does the casino give them out.

Not at all.   My extra tip is a thank you for their hard work.  And a little extra because they have been out of work for a few years.

Why would you worry about what someone else tips.  Kinda like worrying about someone wearing shorts.  Mind your own business.

Dude...you started an entire thread to talk about what you tip. Keep your business to yourself.

BTW...noticed that you've referenced the $2 bills as being "banded" and "brand new" a number of times. However, you have a MOV link in the first post where the cashier takes out the CLEARLY UNBANDED $2 bills and then fans them showing that the serial numbers are NOT SEQUENTIAL as they would be with brand new bills.

Not sure how you missed that, but the spin should be fun.

Correct.  He also had a fresh new banded stack in the drawer.
also you can see those bills have never been in circulation. As they are new. And the ones in the back of the stack are used.  You can tell by the color of the bill edges.

and dude the post isn’t about what I tip.   Maybe you should reread it.
it’s  about the casino handing out and having 2.00 bill available for anyone to have.

Damn right.  That is exactly why I tip bar servers and bar tenders extra.  And I find that it works.
