QM2 Guide to Wi-Fi Access Point Locations for Passenger Cabins

A very common complaint about QM2 is that the Wi-Fi does not work in many of the cabins. These passengers find themselves having to go to public areas to find good Wi-Fi signals so that they can access the Internet.

Because many passengers want to use the ship's Wi-Fi in their cabins, I have provided a list of Wi-Fi Access Point (AP) locations in the hallways of the QM2 passenger cabin decks. I compiled this list on a recent TA crossing by walking the length of all of these decks and writing down the cabin number of the nearest door to each of the APs that are visible in the hallways.

If Wi-Fi is important to you, I recommend choosing a cabin that is near a Wi-Fi AP. This spreadsheet should allow you to do that.

Here is a link to the spreadsheet:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/10F7haTdWZ9CvNOck0ig4TK_DGL4Bwn-H/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=100936022927207792570&rtpof=true&sd=true

For those of you who disapprove of Internet access on cruise ships and wish to comment on that, I encourage you to start your own thread on that topic. 🙄

Terminology: In many of the CC threads, people refer to the Wi-Fi devices in the QM2 hallways as "routers". This is technically incorrect, and I don't bother correcting folks in those threads. But for anyone wondering why I refer to these as Access Points, read this: https://www.techtarget.com/searchnetworking/answer/Is-there-a-difference-between-a-wireless-access-point-and-a-wireless-router#:~:text=Routers can serve either wired, capability to a wired network.

So for example, cabin 10016 is right next door to an AP and should get a stronger signal versus 10024 that is farther between 10018-10028?
I want to make sure I’m reading this correctly.
Great work!

Yes, 10016 is next to 10018. 10018 has an AP near it's door. It should have better wifi than 10024.

However, I cannot account for APs I could not see. It is possible that some of the Queen suites have APs in the cabin, and 10024 is a Q5.

I am almost certain that the aft Queen suites (Balmoral, Windsor, etc) have APs within, because there are no APs in the hallway aft of 10129.

A ceiling AP [I called therm routers before reading this excellent thread] was pointed out to me in stairway B which is why I did a Christopher Robin [courtesy of AA Milne for those unfamiliar which his poems] when we had a mid ships' cabin.

Any chance of a similar spreadsheet for QV? 🙂

You make a good point. There is an AP centered in front of the elevator/lift bank on each deck and each bank (A,B,C,D). This may help  provide a usable WiFi signal in some cabins.

Sorry, my omission. I omitted to say this was all on QV rather than QM2.

Perhaps everyone could chip in to send Mercruiser on QV and QE to survey all the APs. 😀

Suppose it would be a Go Fund Me page these days.

I was in cabin 4121 with a router right above the cabin and I had NO service in my cabin.  The only way to get signal was to open the door and stand with my tablet or laptop in hand.

Cunard's staff are well aware of the issue, but say nothing unless you complain.

Wifi was acceptable in the public rooms.  However I did see many people standing in the deck 4 hallway with laptops/iPads in hand....

I've probably spent over 10 months total on the QM2 but haven't been back since 2019.

As far as I can remember, the internet was a problem in the last decade on the ship, especially in the rooms and hallways.

This was sometimes frustrating for me because I had to take care of some business emails and sometimes phone calls but the link quality was really bad.

Until I figured out that the problem was the WIFI, not the ship's internet. My mistake initially was thinking that the satellite connection is not good.

I don't know what the situation is now but up until 2019 the 'fix' was simple.

Go down to deck 2 front, where the computer classes are being taught. There is an area outside with drinks, desks, and chairs etc. In that area the WIFI is fantastic, super fast and reliable, and you can get all your work done quickly. Using the internet during dinner time helps getting better internet speeds.

It also makes sense to have outlook on your laptop so that you can receive and send all your emails in just a few minutes, instead of using a web email account.

This was very true when the plans had you paying by the minute. It's now by the day, so the need for efficiency isn't quite as urgent.

Following @Mercruiser's excellent work for QM2, here are the WiFi access points for Queen Elizabeth.  I added a deck or two per day to my usual morning ship roaming walks (before going outside to watch the sunrise, of course 🌅), and made note of the access point locations.

An Excel is attached, and a copy and paste shown below.
