Weather in the Mediterranean Summer

Thank you everyone for your insights! It is too late to cancel/reschedule my August 5th cruise, so we are going, heat be damned :).

I have pre-booked all the tickets I could think of and private tours where I could with an air conditioned vehicle (Ephesus, Pompeii), so worst case scenario DH will have a chance to sit in the car. 🤞 the heat wave will subside some, but I am not very hopeful. Wish us luck!

Another thought.  If you have to go in summer, why not do a Baltic Cruise and wait for the Med when you can go before or after summer?

It can also be warm in the Baltic, though not the high humidity, stifling heat of the Mediterranean ports. When we spent our 2 cruise days in St. Petersburgh in 2007, the temperature both days was in the upper 80s.

It is too bad about St Petersburg.  Hopefully the war ends soon as I think that is why it is being bypassed.  We went in early June and weather was quite nice.  It certainly got hotter later on.

  • 2 weeks later...

Currently in the Mediterranean and the heat has been very intense (even for us Floridians). I highly recommend bringing a personal fan and a hat. Temperatures have hovered close to - or exceeded - 100 degrees. Still, it’s worth venturing out to explore the incredible ports

Just returned from a Med cruise and it was SCORCHING, but I am a sun lover so I dressed appropriately and continued all my non-stop touring and excursions.  We even saw some of the Greek wildfires up close as our tour bus roared past the fire and the smoke.  I discovered the granita drinks in Italy, a cold slushy fruit mixture, and they became my drink of choice while walking in the cities.  I also recommend starting to tour very early before the crowds and intense heat, and then taking a long leisurely lunch break. However, in the end, some folks just do not have the ability or the physical stamina to tolerate such hot weather, so they should reschedule their travel.

I'm with you!

DD's vacation is the 1st 2 weeks of August & she wanted Italy & Greece--so we head next week!

Booked excursions in Santorini, Athens, Naples & Florence.

Bought lots of linen, solar umbrella, electrolyte tablets, handheld battery fans.

Water bottles will go as well.

It is what it is; we can take breaks when we are wandering.

2 days in Rome prior; we have an evening walking food tour & an afternoon cooking class. Normally walkable from our hotel, but I may just have the hotel call us a cab!
