Bollycats Posted August 7, 2023 #1 Share Posted August 7, 2023 And if so, how is the speed? I may want to stream or download movies but mainly I just want to check my email on my phone using my Norton VPN.
Rare Ken the cruiser Posted August 7, 2023 #2 Share Posted August 7, 2023 I wouldn't get too excited expecting super download speeds once a ship switches over to Starlink. We were on the Diamond for the last few weeks cruising around Japan when they switched over to Starlink in the middle of our 17-day cruise. The download speeds ranged between 1-3 mbps after the transition but was adequate for posting photos to CC and other social media sites as well as for checking mail and accessing multi-layered websites. However, we didn't try streaming movies or using a VPN.
beg3yrs Posted August 7, 2023 #3 Share Posted August 7, 2023 Can't say if the CB has it yet but back in June we were on her up on the Sports Court watching the Starlink folk welding antenna mounts onto the top of Skywalker's. If not available yet, it should be soon.
Rare Rick&Jeannie Posted August 7, 2023 #4 Share Posted August 7, 2023 Starlink is definitely an improvement over the past several cruises we've been on. It's probably not going to be blazing fast but before the rollout I was having constant trouble just getting my email to load!
Rare cr8tiv1 Posted August 7, 2023 #5 Share Posted August 7, 2023 Just got off the CB. July 26 we were docked in Brooklyn.
Bollycats Posted August 7, 2023 Author #6 Share Posted August 7, 2023 Thanks all. I basically just care about reading my email securely. I never use my phone on public wifi so I want to use my VPN.
Rare startedwithamouse Posted August 7, 2023 #7 Share Posted August 7, 2023 Yes! We could stream movies and video call. Much improved and no drops.

FLLman Posted May 16 #9 Share Posted May 16 I would not get excited about Caribbean Princess Starlink. On it now, and at the start of the voyage, internet was very good (2-3 mbps down and 1 up). To me, that is good enough for meetings and streaming video and sound (albeit not perfect). The last 2-3 days it has been terrible, not even usable half of the time to even open a web page that does not have video (with calm seas and clear sky). It is slightly better tonight (.6 down and .3 up), but really bad. Here is a screenshot of the speed test the afternoon of 5/16/2024. If you need internet for work (meetings, etc.) I suggest a different ship.

It would not connect because it was not secure enough of a connection. I had no trouble using Nord when on a 32 night South Pacific cruise last November (2023). I don't know why the difference.
