Selling Girl Scout Cookies

It never ceases to surprise me, no matter how many cruises I take, the inexplicable behavior of some cruisers.

Girl Scout Cookies?

Cutco Knives?

Pretty soon people will be wanting to set up Herbalife tables.

They walk among us.

You need to think big.

Multi-level marketing for time shares.

Do NOT give anybody ideas.  I'm quite surprised that the cruise lines haven't started timeshare programs for cruises.

They kinda did.  That "retiree" cruise that was three years long.  It never got off the ground, but your cabin was available to "rent" if you took a leave from the boat for whatever reason.

I wouldn't mind buying a credit every year or every two years for balcony room 'worth up to xxx amount' and then I could just go online and book something.

I'm part of fabathletics program.  You pay $65 a month and then get a credit up to $90 monthly.  Every month they just auto bill you.  I would do the same with a cruise line.  They bill you monthly and once you hit xxx amount you have a credit to spend toward xxx amount on a cruise.  If you pull out after only 4 or 5 months, that amount turns into a credit.

I truly think it’s a matter of time as the cruise lines gobble up private island in the Caribbean  they start going the Disney route and offering time shares on those islands!

Thinking of changing my user name to “THE ELITEST”!

that sad....When we sold chocolate bars in school we made 50/50 with the manufacturer

The manufacturer doesn't get the rest, it is how the service units and GS nationally is funded.

I suggest setting up a table outside the DBH at around midnight and catch the drunkards on their way out.

I'd definitely buy some thin mints for my walk back to the cabin! Lol!!!!!😆

I hope they accept obc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That clearly won't work.  Everyone knows thin mints are best frozen, and the cabin mini fridges don't get cold let alone freezing.

Actually, some have  had that idea.

About 10 years ago, there was a group selling timeshares on a Mississippi cruise vessel.  I won't call it a ship, it was more like a huge barge, sorta Noah's Ark kind of thing.  You could purchase various type cabins from 'insides' to 'owners suites' for length's of time varying from IIRC six weeks to six months.   Every six weeks or so, the barge would relocate to another part of the river.

I remember seeing brochures at our local marina plus they had a demonstration area set up with mockups etc.

I have no idea what ever happened.

We also had a group in Guntersville Al that was selling floating condos.  Two bedroom, bath, kitchen, and living area.  Looked like small houseboats.  Buyers were limited to only two weeks where they could stay in the condos.  There was a capstone company that would rent the boats for you, collect the rent, and maintain the boats.  There was no power plant so the condos couldn't be moved.   Several years later, the condos were gone.  It was a very good idea for the company.  They used your money to finance their scheme.  No risk to them. If the condos didn't rent, only you lost money.

I vaguely remember the "floating condos" scheme a while back.

Maybe the cruise lines can do the same thing, only offer super cheap fares but you're not allowed on the ship...just have a rope tied to a dinghy behind the ship.  No frills! Food would be thrown to the dinghy sort of like chum. Deserts would be stale Girl Scout cookies. 😉

Just for fun I looked up the new models. Since you can't buy incandescent bulbs anymore they do use a heating element so you wouldn't be able to bring that model on. Assuming security even knew what it was.

interesting about the incandescent bulb. i would not have thought about that, although i did recently experience the very same thing with regard to replacing a bulb for a lava lamp.

I was a Girl Scout leader in the Central Maryland Council from 1989-2001.

Here is how the cookie game was played in our Council:

We sold the cookies from October - November.  A troop didn't have to sell cookies, but if we didn't, we were prohibited from participating in any other type of fund raising.

This included the community service type fundraisers such as helping out at fund raisers for local schools, various disease groups, community programs, etc.

Things that I didn't like about the pressure to sell cookies were the facts that the local troop made bupkes on every box; it was basically child labor.

The money also didn't go proportionally to the Community (in GS terms - the area, usually of all the schools that fed into a high school) or Council (all the Communities in a designated area, usually by county),

Instead that money went to Council to support whatever pie in the sky public relations  scheme (example, "Girl Scouts in Prison, " google it) that was of no benefit to the troops that were providing the money.

Sometimes I will be on a cruise and see some extremely trashy behavior.  And I will say to myself “what are these people thinking!!??”

Then I read cruise critic and go “oh.”

The venn diagram of people who think it’s ok not to tip, to hog chairs, to smoke on their balconies, to bring illegal drugs on board, and to push their way onto elevators would be a circle.

And now a new behavior that would not have occurred to me in a million years.  “Why shouldn’t I force my child to set up a booth in peoples vacations and hock cookies?”  And Half the board thinks it’s brilliant.

Forced Amway presentations are next!  This isn’t your vacation, it’s theirs!

Amen!!!!

I don't know if this is unique to NCL or it's just industry wide, people think the ship is all theirs and the other 2K-3K guests on board should kowtow to their whims.

Knives (which I still think is rather bogus, given those would be near impossible to get on to the ship), cookies, "miracle" creams, etc....why does anyone think this is a good idea to hawk their wares.  Any of that activity should be (and is) prohibited on a cruise ship....any cruise ship.

This does remind me of the husband or boyfriend of a lady who wanted to bring her guitar on board so she could entertain people on the Atrium Stage.  She didn't want to do it in the Karaoke lounge.  It had to be on the Atrium Stage.  I hope we dissuaded him and his SO, but from what he said, she would not go on the cruise unless she was allowed to perform in the Atrium.

Not on NCL, but I "met" twins in the Celebrity Edge Retreat who claimed to be renowned porn stars (who actually showed some "action movies" of them plying their trade they recorded on their phone).  And, it was clear, they thought the ship was an excellent venue for them to pull in some major dollars (and no, I did not go there).

Then there was the guy on Ovation of the Seas who insisted on showing me naked pictures of his wife while I was trying to relax in the Diamond Lounge.

That said, I also met Ray "Boom-Boom" Mancini on an NCL sailing.  We remained friends for a while, but we lost track of each other during COVID.  Great guy.

Have met a wealth of wonderful people on cruise ships, many of whom post here.  None of them tried to sell me cookies, knives or sex.

oh god!  I remember that thread.  He seemed honestly fearful of her. “If they don’t let her sing and play guitar it’s going to be a problem!!”

Super nice guy.  This was after he retired from the sport.  He was genuinely surprised anyone knew who he was.  He introduced himself as Ray Mancini.

I quizzed “Boom-Boom”?  He got a big smile and said “yes”.

He had lots of great stories…too many to relay here!

Best $2,300.00 we ever spent!!

Is this serious?  You sepnt $2300 for knives purchased from someone on a cruise ship you never met before and invited you over on false pretenses?

I also agree with someone else who asked how these knives got onboard.  I had the Swiss army knife from my toiletries kit confiscated on one cruise.

I'm with you.  Somehow I don't think this was a "thing".  I can't see anyone getting knives on board a cruise ship....especially several of them...even more unlikely if they had to get them through airport security.

I wonder if they would of got conned into a $10000 time share in Mexico. I think its a line of BS I cant believe some of the garbage folks post.

The only thing more unbelievable than the knife story itself is actually admitting it here, if it was true.

This is funny I remember reading something like this. I cant stand folks that constantly have to be the center of attention. I try to avoid these folks as much as possible. Dont want to feed into there behavior.

That is cool as heck. I remember meeting Tony Dungy on a cruise recently my son was about 17 at the time we were on a elevator with Tony and his wife. My son said geez why are all these folks trying to get on this elevator like were famous or something. I looked at Tony we both laughed. I found out the next day he was doing a speech on the ship.
