Embarkation Luggage

You can't take full size luggage on, I've seen it attempted

Think it was in San Pedro a couple of years ago where you couldn't even carry your "carry on" - they checked everything except backpacks/purses.

The odds of your bag being lost are tiny. Maybe 1 or 2 chances out of 6 or 7 thousand bags.

Had a couple in the cabin next to us a few years ago who checked the only two bags they had because they didn't want to lug around a backpack or a carry on. Turns out all of there clothes were in one big 32 inch bag and other stuff in a smaller suite case. 10:00pm the first night I hear shouting in the hall. Long story short they ended up buying a bunch of clothes on the ship....

To say they were the most unhappy people during the cruise was an understatement. They even had their meds in the lost bag.

My advice is two bring a carry on and a small back pack for each person, cross pack them. Other stuff goes in checked bags. We can go a week for what we bring in them.

The luggage I had in mind is 28” lengthwise/height.  The 24 x 16 applies when the luggage lies flat.  The main problem I see is if I can pick up the luggage and place it on the scanner.  I will know the day of the cruise.  I usually carry my own luggage off the ship so the gangways shouldn’t be a problem boarding the ship.

If your bag is 24 x 16 in width/depth, it could be 6 feet long and still fit.  The length height doesn't matter since you are not trying to get the bag to fit under a seat.

Here is a unique question not directly asked -

We will be in the Haven - Dec 12 Forward Facing suite

We ONLY travel with airline legal carryon bags

We each will have one rollaboard and one backpack [and a 3 pack of wine]

Can we take them through security and then deposit them in our cabin on the way to Haven lounge at embarkation?

Depends on the ship.

At the very least, you'll be taken directly to the Haven Lounge, then  you maybe able to take them to your room or if not, there will be a place where  you can leave the bags.

the haven staff, particularly the cabin attendants, are very agreeable about bag drops in the room, even before the rooms are fully made up. provided you're just dropping off and not exploring an unmade cabin, there should be no problem.

typically, you won't be able to do it upon embarkation and "on the way to haven lounge," if you're boarding with the concierge or a butler who is taking a group of people... you'll need to stay together and listen to a short welcome and orientation speech. then you can drop your bags.

Fully agree but we've never, three cruises, experienced a welcoming and orientation speech.

Hate to disagree with you, but...ya know, I am.

We've been on three cruises where we were not allowed to access our suite before the general all rooms ready announcement. Now, we were not staying in the Haven proper/complex/enclave, so there could be a difference there. But, it did happen on Getaway (2022 and 2023) and Joy (2023).

Unlike @RocketMan275, we have always had a welcome, introductory speech except one time when we slipped away from our guide and went around the ship unescorted on the embarkation deck (no clue which number it was).

well, you're not disagreeing as much as sharing your personal experience, which is what the forum is all about. ironically, my only experience in a haven room outside the haven proper was also on the joy and my experience was exactly the opposite of yours. i received a warm welcome from the cabin attendant, who, by the way, was named "joy."

YMMV (and apparently has) and it may be as simple as it's more difficult on ships, such as the joy, on which some haven cabins share a common hallway with non-haven cabins and the door to that area is locked until the general "all clear" announcement. without knowing more details, it sounds to me like you couldn't get to the cabin because of a locked perimeter door... and that this was not a case of being told "no bag drop for you!" by the staff.

if you could have found your way in there, i seriously doubt that a haven cabin attendant would say no to a quick bag drop. but i could be wrong.

Three Haven cruises.

Never had a welcome speech.

Always immediate access to cabins except for the time we were not in Haven proper.

We are just of the Encore...you could carry on regular size luggage (check in size for airlines) no problem...and once on board you could leave it at Los Lobos until your cabin was ready.

you can bring on only carry-on sized luggage.

whatever you bring on has to be able to pass through the x-ray machines at the port.

This is correct.. I had my drone in my carry on that I brought onboard to fly off the back of the ship on port days and the security guard at the port said wow I can’t believe you got that through.. I asked him what was the craziest thing he ever let through the X-ray machine and onboard and he said.. you probably won’t believe this but a set of Cutco knives in a gorgeous  natural wood block!!

Thats why you need to put it in checked baggage, 4 times for me and always made it. I would not even think about flying it off the ship, in port or not.

The only reason we packed it in our carry on is because we wanted to get drone footage in and around NYC. It worked out great I even sent the footage to NCL with a release that they can use any footage the deem fit at will. They asked we only use while ship is in port so the drone does not malfunction due to high winds bc the ship can travel up to 23 knots at times.

Their are a number of YT videos of idiots flying drones from ships as the ships were moving. Most of them never saw the drone again🤣 I wouldn't in a million years try it, too much metal, wind speed and interference from radar

IMG_2320.dngI just boarded the Sky and you can put your bags in the mojito bar.

Greetings. I wanted to do the March 20 cruise but was unable.  I am going on the 4/20 nine day.  I was wondering about your experience and especially about debarkation.  What time do they start to disembark? Are there transfers available to the Punta Cana Airport? I wasn't able to book ship transfer back to the airport.  Anything else that would be important to know for a solo cruiser? Thanks in advance, Barbara

This is the first time I have heard of anyone not getting their bag by the end of the first day.

I once did not get my bag by dinner, and it turned out I accidentally had a prohibited item in it and so I had to go and claim it from security personally.  (I had a pocket knife with a blade that was larger than allowed.)  They kept the knife and I got to keep my bag.

Bumpy start but it turned out to be a great cruise.  I let them keep the knife.

We have sailed 34 times on NCL, and10 times we have received a flier delivered to our room, looking for lost luggage that someone did not receive. to see if it any passenger had it in their cabin.

I've cruised many times and never seen this.  I hope you're not on my next cruise.

wow.  you've never seen the flier?  that's surprising.  Of my 8 cruises, I would say I've received the flyer on at least half of them.  I prefer the bigger ships, so the chances are higher given more people and luggage

I've never stayed on the Haven, but also never have a problem going to my room and dropping off my luggage.  I used to drop it off in the storage area (casino, Asian restaurant) until I discovered I can just take it to my room.  I just sit it in the closet to make sure it's not in the way.  I just have to remember to take out a cigar, my cutter, and matches so I can have a smoke after getting lunch

I’ve cruised four times with NCL and I received once a flier indicating someone didn’t receive their luggage.  The flier asked us to check our cabin including under the bed for the lost luggage.  Luggage occasionally do go missing on cruises.
