Stay in New Jersey and Cruise From Brooklyn

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

We just booked a cruise leaving from Brooklyn and have started the hotel hunt.  I'm wondering if it might be less expensive to stay in New Jersey and if we did so, best way to get to the cruise port in Brooklyn?  Ideas for hotels, routes etc. are welcomed.  Ideas about staying in Brooklyn area would be great as well.  Thanks in advance.

It's a very broad question (prob too broad) but the general answer is yes, it will most likely be less expensive to stay in Jersey than Brooklyn. To get to the BCT I would use Uber, set up a car serivce, or drive (if you have your own car with you). The issue with Jersey is that the hotel itself will be less expensive but your transportation costs will be higher. If you have your own car that will be less of an issue.

In Jersey there are a ton of options and all depends on your budget. Lots in Jersey City, Elizabeth, around Newark Airport, as well as further out into the burbs.

Brooklyn, at least in the tourist areas, will be on par or maybe a little bit less than staying in Manhattan. But the benefit here is that you're close by the next day and your transportation costs will be fairly contained compared to Jersey.

Assuming that you're flying into EWR there are a large variety of hotels near the airport.  To narrow your search you might want look at a cluster of five hotels including an Embassy Suites, a Courtyard by Marriott and a Residence Inn located on International Boulevard in Elizabeth. The hotels are adjacent to The Mills at Jersey Gardens outlet mall and a couple of chain casual dining restaurants. They will all have complimentary shuttle service from the airport.

The next day you can take Uber or a car service such as Carmel Limo from the hotel to the cruise terminal.

We are not sure how many days you will be staying in NYC. But being in Downteown Brooklyn/Brooklyn Heights will afford you to close proximity to BCT. About 20 minutes in distance. From the above locations. The streets are straight traveling to BCT but can encounter travel depending the days you will be heading to the Terminal.

There are hotels and boutique hotels in the Atlantic Avenue area and other areas in vicinity.

Brooklyn is very interesting in that area but not as engrossed in tourist attractions but still interesting in content. Dumbo (Brooklyn Bridge Area) Park Area, Brooklyn Bridge Walkway, East River to Lower Manhattan. Last minute shopping on Fulton Street if needed. Also many different restaurants to along Court Street and Smith Street also Montague Street. Oh BTW, the Brooklyn Heights Esplanade viewing the East River, Bklyn Bridge and Lower Manhattan.

How are you getting from here to the US, are you driving or flying? We did trips from both Manhattan and Brooklyn two years ago, driving down, and stayed in NJ both times as hotels and long term parking are significantly cheaper than either Manhattan or Brooklyn (especially given our weak Canadian dollar). For the Brooklyn trip, we stayed in Teaneck just off the GW Bridge, then drove to the BCT. Fortunately for us, it was just before the parking rates at the BCT almost doubled to their current ($US45/day?). Unfortunately, while the ferry system from NJ to NY is fantastic, it's not conducive to staying in NJ and getting to Brooklyn as there is no convenient direct ferry between the two.  Though convoluted, one way would be to stay in Weehawken, take the ferry across to 43rd St, Uber down to the Pier 11 ferry terminal at the foot of Manhattan then take the ferry across to Brooklyn. The ferry terminal is literally next to the cruise pier. The easiest way, though at higher cost might be to stay in NJ near one of the Tunnels for the  cheaper hotel and long term parking then Uber directly from the hotel to the BCT. Hoboken or Jersey City are near the Holland Tunnel which would probably be the shortest route. In future when we sail from Brooklyn, that's probably what we will do.
