Disgraceful smoking area on Joy

Recommended Posts

I am not a smoker!

But the smoking area location on the Joy is insulting.

First of all, it is by the pool and kids pool which typically is hot, humid and poor air circulation.

it is small and surrounded by glass. Looks like caged animals on display. No place to sit. Smoke escapes to the area around.

Why not on an open deck??

So, do you want the smoke contained instead of escaping or do you want it on an open deck where it's not contained?

The smokers need a covered space to smoke. It used to be on the semi open space in the Spice H20, but when it was rainy, cold, windy, you ended up with smokers everywhere. The box they have now is fine. Similar to other ships.

Yes, the parents would also appreciate more distance between the smoking area and the kids splash pad.  You could smell the smoke on the getaway at the splash pad.  I didn't mind the casino smoke that filtered through the center of the ship because I just walked across the ship on different floors than the smoking one, but I couldn't avoid the smoke near the splash pad because my kids wanted to play there.

Dear Lord….another smoking thread.   Soon to be followed by a chair hogging post.  Then, the all encompassing “Is Vibe worth it?” post.  Sorry folks, just getting tired of the incessant “it’s not fair!” mentality.   Go ahead, fire away and tell me I don’t have to be here….and you’re right.   But am I the only one who feels this way?   Blessed to be able to cruise from a financial and personal health position.  If you smoke, you can still smoke on the ship.  If you like to sunbathe, find a chair.   If you want to spend extra money on Vibe, thermal spa, specialty dining….do the thing.  Just be grateful that we can all cruise.

"Why" is a great question, however random people on an internet forum are unlikely to be included in the "why" behind a corporate decision.

Since you were on the Joy and had the opportunity to ask the NCL staff directly, what did they say when you asked?

Just off the Joy.

The smokers had their own little area that was out of the elements.  I may be missing something, but how is that bad?

I do understand the desire not to have it near the kids section, though.

Fact is, no matter where you put it, someone will take offense because they don't want the smell near them.

But, caged animals?  Ummmmm.....they can leave any time they want....come and go...any time they want.  Not sure where you got that impression of being caged.

To me it seems some tend to be a bit dramatic, using words like 'disgraceful,' 'insulted,' and 'caged animals.'

Personally, I find smoking stupid, disgusting, and foul, but if smokers are following the rules, it is not for me to impose my beliefs on them.

I agree... Poor planning by NCL!

The splash pad is on the opposite side of the ship. Plenty of “distance”.

@BirdTravels - See the post from @kitkat343. It seems like they need more distance!

In all fairness,BirdTravels may be correct in that the two areas aren't next to each other -  I don't know exactly where the smoking area was on the Getaway, but I do know that when the wind blew in a certain direction I could smell the smoke by the kids splash pad.  The cruise lines need to keep these two areas separate enough that nothing blows over the kids.  The getaway had a ton of smoke in the center of the ship near the casino, but I didn't care about that because I could just cross the ship on other levels.  But when your kid wants to use the splash pad you are stuck there so the cruise lines need to keep these areas far enough away that you can't smell the smoke by the splash pad.

And you don't think that using words like "stupid", "disgusting", and "foul" is also a bit dramatic?

If it's by the pool, especially a kids' pool, then surely it's better to glass-off that section to contain the "air pollution?"

On the Escape the pool-level bar is luckily smore-free, but right above it is a similar bar but crowded with smokers. Unfortunately not cordoned off by glass but what can you do...

I was on the Joy last month and know exactly how the smoking area is set up. And it’s non-proximity to the splash pad.

Cool; I too know exactly how the smoking area is set up on the Joy!

We are all entitled to our opinions. My opinion is that we should avoid giving kids cancer. Therefore, it is my opinion that they should move the smoking area to the adult only area.

You're entitled to your opinion about the "non-proximity." I disagree with you, but in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter. As far as I know, neither of us works for NCL, or has any influence over where their smoking area is located. So I bid you a great evening and happy travels!

I don't think so, no. I do see your point though, so maybe they are and definitely do not want drama. Having smoked for 25 years and thankfully quitting over 10 years ago, I chose my words to describe the feelings of the choices I made and their results. I did not use my words to put others down or express thoughts of their choices and ethics.

Congrats to all of the former smokers.  Have known quite a few "ex-smokers".  All of them stated the same thing....QUITTING WAS THE HARDEST THING ANY OF THEM EVER DID!

That said, they all did it and were overly grateful that they did.

I have no dog in this hunt.  I don't think any group should be made a pariah.

The numbers of smokers on cruise ships is very small....and shrinking.  Personally, I think the cruise lines have been very accommodating for smokers, at no small expense.  NCL's newer ships actually have an enclosed area in their casinos just for smokers.  They designate a special area just for smokers.  So, they are going out of their way for what ends up being a very small number of guests, when they could be using those spaces for the larger majority of guests.

I don't think smokers are being treated barbarically, in any way shape or form.

i don't at all think so.  I think it is honest about the matter.  Anyone who chooses to use a product that plainly states on the packaging that it will give you can and other serious heath issues including death is absolutely being stupid IN MY OPINION.
