Water

It's the same process but the water on my recent NCL cruise tasted a lot better than on some of the other ships I've been on, even though as you mentioned the type of equipment and process required is the same.

Sometimes ships will supplement ship produced water with shore water, depending on the amount of time spent sailing between ports, and the speed they make doing so.   So, the taste may be from municipal water.

Not to hijack this thread too much, but I had super swollen ankles on my last cruise, and I drank lots of tap water. Someone mentioned to me that the filtration system that NCL uses caused the swollen ankles. Does anyone know if there's any truth to this? I don't have a TA that upgrades my drink package, but I am thinking about upgrading or getting a water package if needed.

I’d much more suspect the tendency to overeat and overindulge on cocktails as the cause. I think I’ve gained weight on every cruise I’ve ever been on. I don’t blame water for any of it.

I’m guessing there is A LOT more salt in the food (especially the buffet) than tap water.

As others have mentioned this is unlikely to be related to the tap water and could very well be related to the salt content of the food. Other possible contributors include heat (people tend to be more swollen in the heat than in the cold) and activity. If you spent more time on your feet than usual, that can also cause your ankles to swell.

Seltzer from a soda dispenser at any bar is.

This depends on the server. If you have no beverage package (as I did on a 2022 cruise), some servers will provide free seltzer. Others will ask that you pay. It was 50/50 on if I had to pay or not.

I almost never drink bottled water when cruising. I fill up bottles in my restroom, order tap water at the restaurants, and utilize the water stations in the buffet. I've never experienced swollen anything. Of course everyone's biology is different, but I have had swollen ankles in the past (usually when I'm hiking ten or more miles). This doesn't happen to me, though.

I was thinking this also. That for many folks, they do way more walking on a cruise than they do regularly.

No truth to it. They use the same water everywhere on the ship. Your cabin is no different.

Due to concerns about sodium I rarely order soup on any cruise, and prefer to drink bottled water. I will drink melted ice bucket water if I do not have any bottles. Most of my recent NCL cruises have been through a casino, and the NCL casino cruises include basic drinks in the casino and bottled water at the casino bar. We usually get a couple of bottles before we head back to the room at night.

One cruise on Dawn several years ago I had swollen ankles. I believe this was from a combination of salty food, too much alcohol, and not enough water. It may have been the first time I ever had the unlimited drink package!

Just to note that the ice is made from the water used everywhere else on the ship, including the tap in your bathroom.  But to each their own.

on the “free drinks in the casino” comment, that stopped back in April.  There are no longer free drinks in the casino for CAS guests, and thus no free bottled water unless you are at a higher tier which gives you the beverage package across the ship.  For lower tiers they now leave bottled water in the room.

This is true, but the ice is made from water that has had a further filtration, by a carbon filter fitted at the ice maker, to remove the chlorine and calcium that is in the tap water, to prevent scaling in the machine.  This is true of water from bar guns, water service stations in dining venues, and water dispensers in the buffet.  So, it is slightly different from the cabin bath sink.

I have been told here that it's only on my head, but I do think the water station water tastes better (or rather doesn't taste at all...) than the water in my room that has a slight chlorine smell. It makes perfect sense that there is an extra filter on those machines, but I don't know if that's the case or not.Either way, I have no problem drinking eíther.  I

As someone who has spent years repairing these ice/water dispensing equipments, and renewing the filters on a scheduled basis, there are filters.  They are required by the USPH/CDC Vessel Sanitation Program for ships calling at US ports, and the EU's ShipSan program for ships calling in the EU.

This statement has zero relevance to this board or thread. Their drink package works in most, but not all bars. And has a low threshold before you are paying the difference. And does not work in specialty restaurants.

Wait, what? Are you saying the drink package doesn't work in specialty restaurants? (New to NCL)

I believe the statement was referring to MSC’s drink package.  NCL’s packages definitely work in the specialty restaurants.

and how much out of pocket does one of those drink packages cost?  Remember that NCL is effectively charging $21.80 pp/pd for the drink package.

Most people pay $0 for the drink package by utilizing FAS.

No. They pay 21.80 per day. Gratuity.

(EU/UK have different rules, but either way, nobody pays 0 unless their travel agent or someone else gift it to them)

No. You need to pay the grats on the package which is what the poster is referring to.

Yup, I was referring to the beverage service charge most people pay.  Later in the thread I looked up an MSC cruise to compare the price with drinks and WiFi included and that added around $30 pp/pd on a 4 day cruise but apparently the value on-board is lower due to the lower limit on drink cost and the restricted places you can use it.
