Look at these hand quilled cards sold throughout Ketchikan

@ceilidh1

Mine looked nothing like this. Mine looked like a blob of glue with some squashed paper hanging precariously in haphazard loops.

Yvonne - I've enjoyed your review and stories of your adventures with your Dad. Thank you for sharing.  If you go on NCL again, you might try using their Access Desk for your dietary needs/requests.  I often travel with a friend who needs a gluten free diet, and on each cruise, a wonderful crew member would meet with her at dinner to plan meals for the next day.  I'm sure your vegetarian and protein requests would be fulfilled using that service.

Meet Bailey.  Bailey’s human was having a beer at Asylum. I sat down cross legged on the floor to give her a cuddle and she crawled into my lap, turned herself around and upside down, placed her paw on my shoulders and soaked up all the belly rubs and ear rubs she could get. She did this with each person who came in and when a new person was not entering the bar she went from patron to patron seeking (and bestowing!) more love.

My dad is a cat person. Roy Rogers’ dog actually lived in my dad’s house until his mom said the dog was disturbing the cats. Dad does not pet dogs. Bailey was sweet and gentle so I tried to teach dad how to approach her under the chin.  He sort of knocked on her head the way one would knock on a trap door to see if anyone was inside the secret hideaway. Then he drank his beer and swore at the frenzy of flies circling about in Asylum.

Hungry at Asylum? You order at the bar and the food comes from Burger Queen next door. Remember I said I was going to tell you about the best veggie burger I’ve ever scarfed down?  This is it!  It was a multiple napkin affair. Those grilled veggies were amazing.  I told the bartender how great they were and she said she sometimes orders them without anything else.

When we were in Asylum two passengers from the Jewel came in. They started cuddling Bailey and the owner spoke to them quite harshly because they were letting the dog bite them. They looked pretty upset so I started talking to them. At this point each had a pint in one hand and a doughnut from Jellyfish in the other. They both said their doughnuts were stale which is too bad.  The mom was really worried about missing the shuttle back to the ship and was uncertain about all aboard time so I showed her the photo from Ward Cove with the times posted.

We finished our food and drinks and carried on down the street toward Berth 4.

This was in a thrift shop window

I popped into Jellyfish for the artwork

Just as we boarded the shuttle (we are with Ian again) the rain started and wow did it rain.

When I was on Princess this summer if it was raining they moved the security screening deeper into the boat so more passengers could stay dry. The Jewel didn’t do this and the two little tents they had outside the gangway provided little shelter so we got soaked waiting to get back on board. Since I was already drenched I went to take photos of jellyfish and sea anemones at Ward Cove

I have filled out the Access Form for a vegetarian diet more than 25 times on more than 50 NCL cruises. It makes zero difference. NCL can no longer provide a healthy vegetarian menu that includes protein.

Back on board I used the hair dryer to dry off then just relaxed and watched the rain until it was time for dinner.  I wasn’t very hungry but had prearranged for a vegetarian meal at a certain time in Cagney’s so we went up for dinner. In my opinion NCL uses the term Freestyle Dining but there is nothing freestyle about it. With ships sailing at and over capacity reservations are needed for specialty dining.

Drinks were good

Not pictured: the screaming baby at the table behind our table. This kind of ruined our meal.

half portion of lobster bisque for dad

I did not order an appetizer. I wanted to have room for my dinner.  After dad finished his soup and after I had said twice that I didn’t want an appetizer the waiter brought me cauliflower soup. He said the Restaurant Manager, Wilson, told him to serve it to me.

It was fine, but I didn’t order it and I didn’t want it.

Dad ordered petite filet mignon cooked medium

This is his plate as presented by NCL.

IMG_5069.thumb.jpeg.d7839ac7eac6fae5a680d169f4804b0e.jpeg

The meat was so tough and so overcooked he could barely cut it, let alone chew it. Dad’s face showed utter disgust and I don’t blame him.

This is my meal. Paneer with veggies.  Dad and I shared it. It was good but not great.

Yesterday I requested lentil dal for dinner tonight.  The lentils came cold and undercooked in a swirl of avocado. This was nicely presented but my god the chefs need to taste their food. Don’t serve undercooked lentils. I did not eat this.  It wasn’t edible. Actually, I don’t even think these were lentils. They were green and round.

That is the story of my “special” meal.

Dad had ice cream for dessert and I didn’t want anything except to get out of Cagney’s.

I didn’t write any notes for Ketchikan evening and I don’t have any drink photos so we definitely didn’t go to Maltings. We must have gone to the thermal suite and stayed there until it closed at 10:00.

I know I didn’t chat with my friends or post anything here because this was the Internet situation per usual on the Jewel.

Cruise Critic needs a "care" reaction like that other site. I feel so awful for your experience 😥

Thank you for the kind comment and for understanding that, while we both did our best to stay positive and enjoy ourselves, we were both just so full of disappointment and disgust by this point we were ready for the cruise to be done.

I lost a solid five pounds on the Jewel.  This is not due to exercise but rather to the poor quality, selection, presentation and service of food and to the ice vs drink ratio. Who goes on a cruise and loses weight?  That’s not how it’s supposed to work!

I lost weight on Princess too but that is because I often walked for 5+ hours a day, not wanting to miss a moment in those amazing ports. I ate so well on Princess and the food brought me so much joy.
