I dont believe Royal charges for the use of the steam room/sauna's on any ship. The one on the Explorer was pretty much empty on a 9 night cruise. It seemed as if the same five or six people were using it, and we were always entering when someone was leaving, or we were leaving and someone else was entering. To give you a heads up, you may see someone steaming in the buff!

Free sauna/steam room on LOS but there is a charge on Oasis and Allure.

Hi, me and my girlfriend are thinking about taking a cruise on this ship in December. I read through much of this thread, but didn't see anything written about the casino. Specifically, is there texas holdem poker available? I've seen some information about a possible texas holdem tournament, but can't find anything concrete to confirm that.

So, does anyone know if there is poker available in the casino and if it is every night or just a special occassion type of thing?

Thanks!

Poker pretty much sucks on LotS unless you want to play on the digital table and pay a high rake.

Does anyone know if Sorrento's is open upon boarding, or is the Windjammer the only place to eat lunch on day 1?

This was taken at Cafe Promenade on Day 1 around 3pm.

One quick question for anyone recently on LOS...if you happen to recall and/or noticed...which side of the public decks allowed smoking (port or starboard)?

My experience on past (older) RCCL ships has been that the starboard side was the smoking side, but I've seen it mentioned in a couple of reviews from earlier this year that on the Liberty it was the port side...just trying to clarify!

Thanks! :D

On Day 1...Windjammer opens at 11:30 am and closes at 3:30 pm. Cafe Promenade is open 24 hours and Sorrento's Pizza opens at 11:30 am and closes at 2:00 am.

We just got off on Sunday and that is the times they gave for this weeks cruise. (got Day 1 compass before leaving)

When we sailed on Aug 15th, it was in Day 1 compass...the Windjammer opened at 12:00 noon and closed at 3:30 pm. but there was problems that day and it opened a little later. Rest of the times were the same.

Typing from the compass ...We have designated smoking areas in many of our lounges and on the portside of open air decks and balconies. Refrain from smoking pipes or cigars in any of the public areas. Pipes and cigars are only permitted within the cigar lounge. Smoking is not permitted in any staterooms but guests with balconies may smoke there.

I did not know they charge on the Oasis and Allure. Wonder why??

Laura

The ones on Oasis and Allure are part of a thermal suite which you pay extra for. They were already in existance on other cruise lines. I found it very good on NCL when I travelled transatlantic and the weather was too nasty to be outdoors. They need to limit the number of guests to they charge. Sounds like a load but really, you wouldn't enjoy being in there if they gave all the guests access to it. On NCL there was a small steam room or sauna (can't remember which) for all guests in the gym. There's no reason why RCCL can't include a free steam room/sauna as well but they're out to make money.

Hum, you are making me wondering if we should switch down a deck. We are currently in a Family Promenade Cabin on 8. How was the noise level on 8? Our kids will be fairly young (4 and 1.75).

We have stayed on all decks in the promenade cabins and during the parade you will hear it. The lights are bright as well and no mater how tight you close those curtains, light will come in during the parade. A tiny bit of light comes in at the top of the curtain...not much. There is a curtain, sheer and the curtain is very thick...rubber backing. After the parade, no problem with noise or light. Everything is quite during the night and you never hear anything any other time. (day or night) The parade is on the television while it is going on.

The parade never bothers us if we want to go to bed but I can see where it might others. We are very sound sleepers, especially on a cruise ship.

Where do you get the compass on the first day? Do you have to get it in your stateroom? Can you pick them up when you board?

They are in your cabin when you walk in, most of the time laying on the bed or on the vanity. Extra copies for other members of the family are at the pursers desk, hanging on the wall near the pursers desk, going into the windjammer and others places over the ship.

What are the family promenades like? Are they more expensive than getting 2 connecting promenades? I loved having the girls in the one room with the connecting door opened at all times and DH and I in the other. The TWO bathrooms were the absolute best for us. DH is now spoiled by the space of two cabins and will only want to cruise that way from now on!
You can't check the cost of family promenades online -- you'll have to make a phone call. I considered this option for our last cruise, and when I called about it I WAS SHOCKED at how expensive the family promenade room was (admittedly, it was mid-summer). Two connecting roooms was much cheaper. IF you were lucky enough to find a $99/3rd & 4th person sale, you'd come out ahead . . . but we haven't seen that in quite some time, and I wouldn't count on it.

They ended up having a sale on balconies, and we ended up in three E1 balconies -- two connected, and we had the balcony dividers opened up so we could come and go through the sliding doors all the time.

For your situation, without knowing the prices, I'd guess that the connecting rooms are the best option. The two bathrooms are, well, twice as nice as one bathroom, and you'll always have the option of closing the door or opening it.

The one hitch: When we arrived, our connecting door was locked, and the room steward had to go get the key from his superviser (I suspect this was a polite way of saying, "I have to go make sure you're really traveling with the people next door"). We asked the room steward to open the door at maybe 3:00, and when we came back from the muster drill it was done. The point: You may have 1-2 hours in which you're not connecting.

shopgirl - for the family room you need 5 people. I did however ask if you could pay for a 5th and only have 4 in it and they said yes. The price was $80 more than 2 cabins for 4 people. (at the time there was only 4 of us going, since then my sister-in-law is now coming so it is a much better price than 2 cabins) Plus I am told you get a bath tub which will be nice with the little one.
I would not pay $80 more for one less bathroom (even if it has a tub).
Does anyone know if Sorrento's is open upon boarding, or is the Windjammer the only place to eat lunch on day 1?
We were among the first to board, and both Sorrentos AND Cafe Promenade were open.
Where do you get the compass on the first day? Do you have to get it in your stateroom? Can you pick them up when you board?
We had one when we boarded. Did we get it from the person who made our Sea Passes, or did they hand it to us as we entered the gangway? Or were they on the bed when we got into our rooms? I don't remember.

I do know that if, by chance, you miss getting a copy, you can always find them near Customer Service, near the towel pick-up in the pool area, near the entrance to the Windjammer, and in the library. They're not hard to find.

I also liked that they gave us a "highlights" paper that provided an overview of the big-deal events for the whole week. That let us know which nights would be formal nights, what type of show would be available each evening, etc. I don't remember having this on previous cruises.

I can't agree more! Having two toilets and two sinks was well worth it with just the four of us. I can agree that a bathtub might be a nice perk with very young children, but the shower head is removable and it was actually pretty easy to shower the kids in those tiny shower stalls!

Plus in two connecting rooms, you actually get 4 full sized twin beds. From the pictures of a family promenade it looks like there are only 2 twin beds that can be pushed together to make a queen and then a large pull out couch? Please correct me if I am wrong.

My Travel Agent had also said that 2 connecting staterooms were cheaper than the family stateroom too. I just took her word for it and never did ask for the prices!

I had myself and one DD reserved in one cabin, and DH and second DD in the other. However upon entering our cabins, the connecting door was already opened, and in one cabin the beds were separated already and the second cabin had the two twins pushed together! It was like our cabin steward, Rita, somehow magically knew before even meeting us that we would want to have the two girls in one cabin and DH and I together in the other!!

We had a verandah cabin booked for the Dream prior to our Liberty cruise. After sailing in the two cabins, DH told me to change our reservation to two connecting inside cabins!!!

Well, I have read all 65 pages of All things LOS, and I have not seen this question asked. I would like to know if there is a magnifying mirror in the cabin bathrooms? We will be in cabin 6583, a Promenade inside. We had one of these mirrors last year on the Carnival Splendor. It was wonderful, for us "50 somethings" that have trouble seeing!!! I have really enjoyed reading everyones comments and reviews, keep them coming!! We leave Jan. 16th, and I'm already so excited!!:)

I've been on the Liberty 5 times, in JS's and balcony cabins. I've never seen a magnifying mirror in any, though I'd like to have one. This 50 something that has trouble seeing will be doing a b2b on the Liberty again in October. :D

You know the two times we were on the Liberty there was not a magnifying mirror. Wish there was then I would not need to bring mine.

Has anyone stayed in a Family Oceanview room? In particular on of the ones at the front of the boat on deck 7 or 8 on LOS?

TIA

Our daughter, son-in-law, and three grandchildren stayed in the PR family stateroom on deck 8. It was very roomy and nice. For some reason none of the kids liked the bunk beds in another room so they all slept in the main room.

In the main room there was a double bed, the sofa that turned into a double bed, that the area next to the Promenade window where another one slept.

The bathroom had a tub too.

No, but I've seen hand-held versions at Bed, Bath & Beyond.

We once had tablemates who were in one of those rooms, and they LOVED it. They had 3 kids: 2 boys for the bunks, and the youngest child, a girl, got the sofa bed to herself.

Speaking only for myself, though, I'd rather have two connecting rooms. More privacy for the parents, two TVs, an extra bathroom, and less money.

One quick question for anyone recently on LOS...if you happen to recall and/or noticed...which side of the public decks allowed smoking (port or starboard)?

Thanks! :D

I didnt take note of sides but did take note of several smoke friendly spots. Hoof & Claw English Pub on the Royal Promenade, Boleros on deck 4 near the dinning room entrance, Connissurs (sp?) Club outside the Sphinx on Deck 3, Olive or Twist in the Viking Crown Lounge (only by the window seats), Pool Bar & Sky Bar off the main pool. Room attendants will bring an ashtray to your balcony if you ask or if you leave a beer bottle with butts in it on the small table outside.

We have sailed a lot on the Liberty and there has never been a magnifying mirror in any of the cabins we have had but the one I take with me. ;) That is one thing I would never leave at home ;).

You are going to love the Liberty. She really is a beautiful ship.
