Being a reformed smoker of some 30 years I think Celebrity's new policy is great and hope that Princess follows suit quickly. There is no reason what so ever that anyone in these enlightened times has to put up with someone else's smoke.

My guess is never. I have never seen a smoking restriction eased. They just get more constraining. Then everyone gets used to and accepts them.... Yeah...:D

 

Oh.. forget about pointing to that Carnival non-smoking ship... it was an old ship on a non-interesting itinerary that sank that idea.

yup... I believe you ... all his smoke blew directly into our balcony - he might as well been sitting right with us! (well not 'your DH' specifically but you know what I mean)

 

He is exactly why we will be booking with Celebrity next time. We'll help them cut this 20% loss that you're all talking about!

 

I'm sure your husband is a wonderful guy, I just don't want to risk another room next to him ;)

Same here! I really like Celebrity and think it is a wonderful cruise line. But the atmosphere is just a little too "stuffy" for our tastes. However, since we will have smoke-free balcony options, Celebrity (and any other line that follows suit) will be at the top of our list for consideration as we look at our next cruise.

My province is smoke free too.

I don't see why smokers can't just have a place out on deck to smoke. That way everone's happy. Is it really that hard to walk up a couple of decks and go outside?

Why don't they just make some smoking rooms like hotels? Since the $250 fine is listed as a cleaning fee, it seems that their main concerns is the smell that is left behind. I realize this will not make everyone happy because some people will want to have a specific cabin and it is not of the right smoking status. But, at the same time there is obviously a demand for smoke free cabins and the cruise line is meeting that demand.

 

I know that I would prefer to have a cabin that I knew was not smoked in. Luckily I have never entered a smoky smelling cabin, but I know that others have, and it can make for a very unpleasant vacation.

 

The cruise line would simply ask you at time of booking, smoking or non-smoking. Since the ship is basically a hotel at sea, it shouldnt be that hard to do.

 

 

I've been wondering that for years myself. Why can't they catch up with ancient hotel policies that are highly successful, work, and please both smokers and non smokers?

 

I know the answer.

 

Main-stream cruise executives are stupid and lazy.

 

Maybe they believe it'll take a rocket scientist to implement the exact same system hotels have had for years.

As a CONSIDERATE smoker, I do NOT smoke on my balcony when folks on the adjoining balconies are outside on theirs, unless they are also smoking. I do NOT smoke indoors at home, or on the ship except in the casino. I always check to be sure I do not sit down next to a non-smoking person at the slot machines. If a non-smoker sits down next to me and indicates that the smoke is bothering them, I extinguish my cigarette right away. I do not smoke indiscriminately on the open decks, only where permitted. I am very safety conscious when it comes to extinguishing smoking materials so there is no chance that the hot ash might cause a fire.

I carry and use breath mints after smoking so my breath does not offend others. I wash my hands after smoking to remove the odor.

Since I go out of my way to be a non-offending smoker, so please do not tar me with the same brush as smokers who might offend your sensibilities.

Do you feel that you personally may be better served if you had access to non-smoking / smoking, cabins and balconies?

My guess is that this policy will work and will spread. Earlier efforts at non-smoking ships were before their time. Non-smoking in public places is more and more common and more and more accepted. Like freestyle dining, more casual dress, and more extra-cost "amenities," it is the wave of the future in cruising. Time will tell.

The next time I want to book a balcony, I will give celebrity a serious look. There's nothing much worse than going out on your balcony, enjoying the fresh sea air and then suddenly having smoke up your nose instead. Yes, balcony smokers do limit the non smokers ability to and hence time to enjoy their balcony. I hope Princess adopts similar smoking restrictions. I am really surprised that they did not do so after the Star fire. That must have been really terrifying for all concerned.

I love Princess, but the non smoking policy on Celebrity certainly appeals to me. Our neighbors on our last cruise were smokers and while it didn't ruin our cruise, it definitely limited our use of the balcony. There were numerous times that we would be sitting on our balcony and when they came out and lit up, we had to go back inside. As ex-smokers ourselves (for 15+ years) it is really disgusting to smell second-hand smoke in any environment. I almost think we're more sensitive to the smell than nonsmokers. Celebrity, we'll be giving you another look!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 

Well, I've gotta weigh in here -- we're currently on the Emerald and

a cigar smoker has severely curtailed our use of our balcony.

Celebrity is certainly sounding quite appealing right now.

 

Tobacco I can tolerate in small amounts, but how about a 100% smoke-free policy regarding cigars??

I wonder if that is going to include all staff and crew members as I think many are smokers. It might be hard to staff a full ship with non-smoking workers. Just a thought!

I feel exactly the same way. We had just about given up on balcony cabins because of smokers; Celebrity has just presented us with the option of enjoying them smoke-free. Still, we cruise for the itinerary, so if Princess had an itinerary I preferred, I would still choose Princess (booking an inside cabin) over Celebrity.

 

I do think that everytime a mainstream cruise line announces these kind of smoking restrictions, it makes the other cruiselines with no similar restrictions more appealing to smokers; ergo, I believe that Princess balconies may get even smokier.

It was a brand new ship where they even banned smoking while it was being constructed. It failed because of itinerary and lack of revenues comparable to other ships in the casino and bars...

Someone please explain why I can not have an iron in my cabin, but the passengers in the next cabin can have open flames in theirs.

 

Here we are on the Princess board discussing this when it was just last year Princess had a near catastrophy due to smoking on a balcony.

 

I admit I have never smoked, but as a father who travels with his family, I would feel far safer on Celebrity than another line that allows smoking.

All of Carnival Corporation's ships have been retrofitted with balcony fire suppression systems to help alleviate any saftey issue around smoking on balconies...or any other reason that a fire may start outside. Interestingly enough, RCI ships - including those of Celebrity - have not.
