?(No) Trays in Lido

My goodness, I can't imagine putting so much on my tray that I couldn't see over it. That would definitely make it hard to carry.

I actually did not mean see over it as much as I meant not seeing the floor. I know that even when I have just a few items on the tray I am extremely leary of walking very far and I have no mobility problems. I am always so very thankful if a Lido Steward does come to my rescue. Like I said I hate those trays and have on more than one occaision felt that walking to find a table when the Lido is extremely crowded was extremely dangerous. Then heaven forbid if someone bumps you or you run into a chair or have to stop suddenly because someone walked in front of you everything on you tray slides or like I have had on one occasion spilled grapefruit juice. I have learned to now go to my table take the plates off the tray attempt to find a place to get rid of the tray then walk back up to get my juice. Without the tray I could carry my plate, stop to grab a tea or juice that is already sitting waiting to be picked up then walk to my table sit down and enjoy :) Less steps less problems ;)

LOL It appears we have different tastes in dining, those places aren't even on my radar when thinking about a quick bite. I'll have to defer to your knowledge that food served there comes on trays.

Me? Room service is what comes to mind when I think of food on trays. :D

We no longer go to buffet restaurants on land. We do miss going to some of our favorite Sunday Brunches. Sometimes on HAL we have no choice but Lido or room service. While HAL does have a nice selection on their room service menu, we'd rather have the greater variety of the Lido. Without a tray we still have our major problem:

This was a tongue in cheek comment. I don't go to any fast food restaurants. As for the Lido, I love boarding the ship early and eating at the Lido. I also love coming back and being a little chilly from an Alaskan excursion and having some bread pudding or a coffee and a cookie. This is when the love affair ends. The remainder of the cruise I go to the dining room for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I figure "I'm On Vacation, Why Am I standing On A Long Line With A Tray Serving Myself When I Can Be Waited On?"

That's just me though.

I am all for saving money and not wasting--however when I am on vacation I want to feel like it and not feel like I am in a high school cafeteria--I want the extras and not feel like the cruise line eliminated trays to save money--

My solution if they want to remve trays --is add adequate staff to serve beverages

When the Lido is crowded is the time that you will find your table has been cleared and occupied by someone else whenyou come back with whatever it was you had to go back for. Face it: the Lido is a cafeteria - who in their right mind plans a cafeteria without trays?

I agree with MadManOfBethesda, after our first pass through, we just take turns going back to the buffet. When it's the DW's turn, I get to guard the purse and the table. That's how I come up with extra casino money when she isn't looking. When we had trays, first thing we did at the table was to unload the plates and get rid of the trays.

We have never had anyone refuse us sitting down at a large table only occupied by two people. By pure chance one morning we sat down with a couple at random and discovered they only lived a few miles from us and we knew some of the same people. Small world sometimes.

I'm wondering here if we're all getting excited about nothing. Maybe the plates are now bigger ... the kind with separate divisions so that you can get more on them? Maybe the trays are just being replaced with something else ... something that will suit the same purpose?

I'm just wondering here.

Did anyone ever beat you over the head and force you to use one? If you don't want one, fine, but let those of us that do want them have them.:p

Being the polite person that I am when the greeter in the Lido places the tray in front of me with a very small plate, a small bowl and saucer I take it because it appears I have no other choice:o But if he would hand me one large plate that would sufficently hold the items I wish to eat then I would be more than happy. Perhaps I must start asking that they get me one large plate instead of those little plates that do me no good;)

The reason you need a tray is because they give you all these little plates and bowls if they got rid of them you would not need the tray.

I don't think any of us are saying that the rest of you should suffer and do without your trays--we're just saying that, if HAL does get rid of trays, hey, it's really not that awful! :)

Thank You:)

I honestly do not think this is something HAL is doing to save money. I think it is to streamline things and make dining and getting the food a bit easier and more enjoyable. I can see where this will cause less waiting, less lines and make getting the food so much easier.

I also do not want anyone to suffer I just think many are convinced like this board likes to do and make decisions that we will not like this change before we have even tried it. Sadly so many are just so positive that any change is wrong, I am willing to always be in the wait and see. I was leery of the Dine as You Wish like so very many of you that are sure they will miss their trays. But I did say I will have to wait and see how this plays out. Well, I think it is working fine with many coming back reporting that they actually like it.

Hey I can even remember when HAL started the Tips being charged to our ship board account in May 2004. My gosh I can remember how so many in this board was absolutely convinced that the service would totally go down hill. Well in my opinion it did not.

My first introduction to CC when I started lurking then joined was when the Zuiderdam came out and there were several threads and posters that just thought it was terrible that HAL built such a big ship and they would lose all their loyal Mariners because of this new ship. In my opinion the Vista Class has done pretty good and brought in a whole new group of cruisers.

We have seen so many things change over the past several years and we immediately jump in and say we will not like it without even trying it.

Thank you. I have been tryiing to let eveyone on this thread know its not a big deal now for a couple days, its like the y think the world is going to end because of having no trays. Nice to see someone with a clear view have the mind set as me about it. It's not a big deal. In a couple years, you will honestly forget HAL even had trays at 1 point, just go with the flow....Wow...And thanks again for the clear thinking...

Happy Cruising!

Heard from HAL today re the trays - they said that there should be trays on our spring cruise, but if not, just to ask a steward for one and they would bring it to me. Sounds ok to me - however, what is said from head office isn't always what happens. We will see.

The Mariner Society wasn't aware that there weren't trays on some ships - so I informed them and added a link to this thread. I also told them that if trays were eliminated across the board, that I'd be bringing my own. Doesn't take up much space and would help protect things in my luggage.

Just wondering also - will the large plates have hot sections for hot foods and cold sections for cold foods? I guess that wouldn't be important to some people.

Princess doesn't have trays, IIRC. But they hand you a huge oval platter. I'm guessing it's 14" across. It pretty well holds what you need, including a salad bowl.

And does the "huge oval platter" also have room for glasses of milk & juice, a pot of tea with cup & saucer, etc., as well as a salad bowl?

And so would I!
