I absolutely agree that some of the children in these specialty restaurants should not be there.

HOWEVER, I also feel that if the NCL Kids Club was willing to take children to dinner more than just one evening a cruise the problem would be solved! Other cruise lines take the kids every single night allowing parents the opportunity for a kid free dinner. NCL troubles themselves to do this only once a week.

NCL's kids club needs to step it up and meet their competitions lead on this and there would be far fewer children in ANY of the dining rooms crying, tired and misbehaved.

So, NCL has forced parents to bring their kids to the specialty restaurants if they want to go and with NCL's food its pretty darn important to have options outside of the main dining rooms.

well maybe with RCI announcing so many changes in their kids programs NCL will follow. As for the kids club taking kids to dinner, what is wrong with parents taking thier kids to the buffet before mommy and daddy go to the speicalty dining rooms..then can then take the kids to the kids club..??

You probably get in the short line at the store expecting it to be the fastest as well Terry? :p Same thing happens to Mike and I when we go on a cruise. We have the screaming kid that no one says anything to next to us.

I personally love the idea of an adults only restaurant. I am the mother of three adult children and they were very well behaved because we never allowed anything less. That said though, here are just times that adults would appreciate being with other adults, either for romance or fun and friendship. I see nothing wrong with it and certainly wouldn't be offended by it.

LOL.. I can even go one step beyond that. I have literally apologized to people in grocery store check out lines who were in front of me and there was some issue with a price or something that took a while to get resolved. I told them it was my fault it happened because I got in line behind them and jinx'ed them. Always ends up with a good chuckle with them and makes it seem like not so much of a problem having to wait.. 8-)

Terry, I know you are more than fair when it comes to kids. Your words mean alot to me and I will certainly look for the signs next time. We are contemplating the Dawn for a Bermuda run in 2010. Two of my children will be over 16 at that point. Do you remember the age limit?

I honestly did not notice the age limit, but we are going to be on the Dawn this Nov and I will look and see specifically what it says.. I will try to even take a pic of it if I can remember for us to take the cam out to the pool.

LOL. I like the way you deal with adversity! My recollection is that the signs at the hot tub simply said "adult" with no specific age listed.

So start your own poll.

One of the most impressive aspects of cruise critic is the absence of anyone posting here who has ill-mannered, misbehaved children. Nor are there ANY inconsiderate smokers. And with one tiny exception (20 minutes) there are no chair hogs either. Never seen anybody post that they push to the front of the que to get on a tender either.

The internet is a strange and wonderful place.

One of the best posts I've ever seen here, or anywhere. :)

PS For those reacting like someone "called your baby ugly" -- Disney... DISNEY... Cruiselines... has an adults-only restaurant. Everyone who dines at Palo isn't a sociopathic childhater, nor is Disney for offering that venue (along with their adult-only areas on their ships). This thread is about choices and options.

as many do not care for all the noise of kids & parents who do not care.

So we would want adult only areas: pool, restaurants, even theatre time. Epic will be a welcome ship for us.

<hoping I won't regret this> -- Has something been published about how Epic will better meet the needs of those who like "adult only" areas?

I posted your original quote, which I am sure many will agree veered from simply giving your input (calling people greedy is no less rude than what I called your venting! And please bear in mind I voted YES-I simply RESPECT the rights of others to feel differently). There were a few posts you made everytime someone did not feel the same way in which you challenged them. I suggest you reread the thread, maybe you did not mean to come across so strong. Having children does not preclude you from thinking they have no place in areas that others would disagree that they do in fact belong. Next time keep it a simple question!

Oh*******

I didnt challenge anyone, I said I dont get it(why the NO's)

having 14 restaurants on a ship and asking for 1 just 1 to be an adult only venue is not asking too much

yes in my mind its greedy, that some people wouldnt accept 1/14 to be adult only

I know where my children belong and what is appropriate for them as well as their surroundings, children do not belong in all places at all times, we dont agree on this and thats fine.

as for being rude? no comment, but lets put it this way...my kids were not in the hot tub when there was clearly a sign that says...."adults only"

I did not read the whole thread yet but I will later.

I voted no.

Last cruise it was only my son and I he is now 13 our favorite restaurant is Le Bistro and breakfast and lunch at Cagneys and of course late night at Blue lagoon and my son loves Sushi.

I have to say that you will not see many kids if any kids in Le Bisto, So why would NCL make it a point to make a restaurant adult only?

NCL has plenty of adult only venues: The casino, Monte Carlo night, adult only shows, adult only hot tubs,That on my last cruise were fill of children EVERY time I went by them Martini clinic, late night Tapas, Freestyle sundeck, adult only murder mystery dinner, adult only spa and indoor pool. I'm sure I missed a few things.

I dont know of any adult only restaurants here in NY I have no idea about other states.

.

The Bold section in the above quote is Mine.

On my last NCL cruise on the Star we ate at Cagney's two nights both nights we were seated NEXT TO families with children. On group was at least reasonably quiet the other was not.

I don't recall the original question being should there be a specialty restaraunt different from any of the other 13 or so on board that is adults only.

I would not care if it were the same as the dining rooms, or matched another of the popular themed ones. That way no parent or child would be missing a darn thing and all the nice families could enjoy each other they like all those children so much and those of us who raised Five children and want to eat in an all adult enviornment could do so.

Seems to me that even then these parents would be saying you can't do that there is some place that we cannot go and that is not fair.

Have any of you read the 14th amendment to the US Constitution? Its unconstitutional to discriminate against anyone for a number of reasons, including age.

If you want an adult only restaurant it would have to be classified as a bar.

There used to be adult only apartment complexes as well. The Supreme Court ended that practice as well....

Housing laws are quite different than restaurant regulations. There ARE adult only dining rooms in land restaurants. That is not discrimination and this wouldn't be any different. How do you explain Disney's AO restaurant?

Here in Florida we have many manufactered home communities that are for 55 yr old and up. Often wondered how that was legal. The land is private property, just like a ship, maybe that's why. And does a ship registered outside of the USA have to comply with our constitution?

I haven't researched this and am no expert but I believe the community must demonstrate that its purpose is to assist the elderly to meet federal requirements.

I voted YES. There is probably a better chance of getting an Adults Only restaurant than there is the AO cruise I want. The only concern I have is that it wont be enforced. I mentioned the hot tubs the other day....kids in them when they didnt belong there......pushing in the elevators....and just unsupervised. We were on a Celebrity cruise which had an adults only solarium......very nice. Hubby liked going there to get some fruit tarts....I liked to TRY and relax there when he went to the pool. Problem is....kids in the Adult hot tubs with their parents making all kinds of noises....and kids running around playing tag. It is unfortunate that there isnt more enforcement on the cruiselines.....but they dont want to get involved....so rules are broken. Maybe someday things will get better. We tend to eat late and havent had too many problems at dinner.....but a few times we have encountered MAJOR lack of parenting.

Hey...if NCL did the kid-free cruises I wanted....ALL the restaurants would be for adults :)

so clearly that 4 people have agreed that they are well hidden while not one has jumped to your defense that they are CLEARLY there????

As stated if I had seen signs(and thus far no one has confirmed they are on the Dawn or any of the ships I have been on--only mentioned Gem and Pearl) my children would not have been in there, just as I don't take them to Cagneys or Le Bistro, and in fact voted yes in this poll.

I understand your concern but it's a LOT easier to enforce a rule regarding a restaurant than a hot tub.

The ships that NCL has now could not make one of the main dining rooms adult only the ships were built for freestyle dining. People complain now about not being able to get ressie I can't even imagine:confused:

Not sure what parents you are talking about in your above statement?

If its parents that booked an NCL cruise knowing that the restaurants are child/family friendly then that would be me as well.

Don't get me wrong I do not like to dine with a lot loud children or adults That's why I book most not all nights at the specialty restaurants and try not to book at peak times but thats just me on land or at sea:)

Perhaps most folks aren't complaining to the Ships staff (??) I know around here, very loud parties break noise ordanances. But the Police do not care, or enforce the law unless someone complains. If they notice the noise, but no one complains, they figure it's not a problem.

Like most folks, I don't want to be the "bad guy" and run around playing kid cop. It's just easier to go to a predetermined adults only place for a while.

True....but if Adults had those areas enforced too.....they wouldnt feel overwhelmed by kids where they didnt belong. :)

I am no kid hater.....I have 2 of my own who are now grown.....and I have worked in the school system. There are just places where there should be an option of Adults only...a restaurant is maybe a start.....then a few kid-free cruises a year. It doesnt take away the option of family cruising like some think.

Hm... I've read it, studied it, and dealt with it on more than one occasion, so I understand how it applies to "state action" versus "private action." Do you?

PS I disagree with you that the Supreme Court "ended the practice" of adults only apartment complexes. I can only assume that some more education on your part is required.

Monte, that's easy. Neither you nor I fall into the "adult" category. ;)

But seriously, for me 12 is not an old enough cut off age. I think it has to be 18.

Yep, I have trouble with those 15 year olds throwing a temper tantrum in restaurants ;)

Sorry, I just don't recall EVER having had any problems with even a 12 yr old in a restaurant

Ummmmm, don't think the US Constitution has anything to do with what can or cannot be done on cruise ships, with the exception of the one NCL ship that is American flagged.;)

I wouldn't mind an adults only restaurant. I probably wouldn't seek one out for dining.

The only potential problem I see is that anything that creates a situation where a crew member has to deny a passenger something is an invitation for troublemakers to pick a fight, stir things up, seek some kind of compensation for inhospitable service ie. being denied entry or "discriminated" against because they have children.

I think the idea of having exceptions to the rule (ie. adults only after 8pm, adults only on certain days) would only muddy the waters. What if the family of 5 isn't finished eating before the 8pm crowd enters? The 8pm crowd is angry because there are KIDS IN THE ADULTS ONLY RESTAURANT:mad::mad::mad: or the family feels rushed and unwelcome at the end of their lovely, likely extra charge, meal and the restaurant staff is caught in the middle. Asking for trouble in my opinion.

Just this past weekend, there was a young teen at a nice restaurant who was bored out of his mind and didn't mind letting everyone know. He must have gone in and out of the restaurant and into the men's room a dozen times, sighing loudly as he went, and when he was sitting, he was playing with his food, blowing bubbles in his soda, blowing straw papers over his mother's head. He thought this was the funniest thing he'd ever seen. I can't say I cared. I don't let things like this bother me and I felt badly for him. I couldn't believe the parents were so oblivious and for that I felt even more sorry for him. But it was impossible not to notice and if you have an AO restaurant, isn't the idea to create a certain atmosphere?
