Glory 7/11 - NIGHTMARE - My Review

I understand you were a bit uncomfortable. I had a similiar situation on the Holiday, but I still fail to see where the NIGHTMARE is.

A NIGHTMARE is when a tornado comes thru and rips the roof off your house in the middle of the night. A cranky 3 yr old and a slightly warm room is not a nightmare.

I'm done. I really thought you had a real nightmare with the way you started off. This is why people get bashed here. Over exageration of complaints. I am not saying the OP exagerated what he experienced, but the title of this thread is completely misleading and an exageration.

I neglected to include in my narrative that our new room steward was pissed that he got us mid-cruise, and that he had to come make up the room at 3 in the afternoon. We didn't get towel animals, and sometimes turndown service on several nights. He did make the beds, but did not exchange towels etc.

I felt like that would be just petty to "complain" about after practically living at the purser desk this cruise. The last night my wife and I discussed it and decided that we would send all of our tips for the week to our old guy who really went above and beyond (one night without a towel animal my 3 yearold lost it...Our steward was not to be found. I went down for mail check to our old stewards cart, and he was standing there and asked if things got better. I told him yes and no, and we really missed him. Told him about the towel animal, and he stopped and made her one that I delivered.

We went down to the pursers desk to make the adjustment, and was told that it wasn't being split, as the computers couldn't handle it. It was at this point I realized that our 3 year olds tips were likely not going to either of them since it showed her in a cabin on Rivera Deck. I pulled the room steward tips for all 3 of us, and went to the Casino to get the $75 that would have been normally due for the week. (Thank you cruise Critic for this knowledge!!!!!) I then tipped him in cash, and made sure that he wouldn't have any issues because I did this. He said he definitely wouldn't because I wasn't even assigned to him now.

One final thought on the A/C...I would much rather be cold than hot. I can add layers of clothes or cuddle under the AWESOME COMFORT COLLECTION BEDDING that Carnival provides...being hot really has less options.

Also, as I mentioned earlier, this is my 5th cruise, I have NEVER been warm let alone hot....EVER. Generally we are chilly and either take a light jacket or adjust the thermostat.

To those virgin cruisers....please don't think this is the status quo. What you have read here, was a series of failures. Most won't ever face this (I know I sure didn't expect it).

I will say this, if in the same situation again, I would get resolution BEFORE the Vacation Guarantee deadline (24 hours before arrival into first foreign port). If resolution couldn't occur, I would indeed invoke the guarantee.

I will be contacting Carnival with my story, asking for a future cruise credit (which I think is more likely than a refund). I believe they will do the right thing, and grant some sort of compensation.

I guess the lesson I learned is that Carnival does sail full. I know this was discussed a week or so on CC, but according to Ramune, that means every cabin occupied. In the case of our sailing, there were only 2 "spoiled births" which means like a party of 2 in a 3...

So, if there is a failure, they truely may not have a place to put you. You can check out of a land resort....Cruise ships are a very different story.

Any Glory questions???

PS: Replacement room was 6449 if I didn't mention that. / Original was 2348.

A non-sleeping 3 year old.....can definitely be a nightmare. My kids are 9 and 5 and I think I would have slept in the lobby instead of a hot room with them...especially when they were younger.

And here when I cruise, I wish I could get the room that warm. I have to shut off the air completely and then it is still too cold. We usually have to ask that the bedspread be left on the bed.

Like Salty, we keep our home set at 78 degrees and sometimes that is too cold. The winters kill us as it is harder to stay warm. When it gets below 70 degrees, we are looking for jackets.

BTW, mid 70's in Cozumel is considered a cold front.

In earlier years I would sleep in flannel pjs and blankets because my DH liked it COLD-now since the "change" has arrived I will hurt someone if my room is above 70 I want it COLD so a warm room would be a nightmare for me and anyone around me!! Your review was very good, I can tell you are not a whiner you just wanted what you paid for, a cool quiet room!!

I want to thank you for your review. You started off with the positive and then hit on the negative instead of going directly to the negative and never touching on the positive. Sorry you had such a rough time.

PS - I am like your wife. I would have been in tears after 2 nights!!

Oh boy, you have my sympathy! A hot cabin is MISERABLE! I had it happen to me once, , infact that is the first thing I check when I get in my cabin... The AC better be on the coldest setting possible!

I hope you next cruise will be a better one!

I believe there was an older couple that was complaining about the cold (that perhaps was the one we were confused with early on?)...I am pretty sure that they were moved to our old room...as I saw an older couple in there during a mail run.

Appreciate you guys for reading my ramblings...and not flaming.

Oh and by the way, my house is set to 74 right now, and the Cozumel thermometer says 74, so while I couldn't prove it, it was confirming with some accuracy what I was feeling. (Lord knows if a thermometer from Cozumel is accurate, though it was probably was just made in China :-)

To me paying a good deal of money for a vacation to have a cabin with essentially no a/c would be a nightmare. If you can't sleep well then you can't enjoy the day. I am sure it was more like 80 degrees with humid, stale air. I would have been very, very upset. I cannot understand how someone would NOT have a problem with that. Its not the best way to start a vacation. Then to be told its really only 72 degrees? That would add insult to injury.

I hope you get some kind of something for a future cruise. If you are willing to sail with them again, then they should be happy.

Almost exactly what I wanted to say! I too would have been in tears.... although I probably would've been crying on that first night if I couldn't sleep well because it was too hot.

In my opinion, it is always better to have a colder room than a hotter one. You can always bundle up but you can't always un-dress!

The humidity in that room must have been unbearable, I can imagine!! Even if the temp was below 80, the humidity must have made it awful.

I don't get it... seems like the OP (who I belive is being honest and accurate) is reporting his room was measured in the 70s - he reported 74 to 79 degrees at various point in the narrative.

Now, I understand temperature is personal preference, but I keep my house at 78 - 79 in the summer and am very comfortable. No one who visits complains. I don't know how someone would have any difficulty sleeping at 79 degrees (don't wear PJs is my advice there.)

What is the desired temperature they wanted? They mentioned other places in the 60s. Did you want your room to be in the 60s? I don't think that is a reasonable expectation.

If I would come visit you and your house was 79 degrees you would see me sweating.

We keep our house 66-70 degrees.

I never suggested to sleep naked but maybe just shorts, etc. Clothing has a big impact on the heat factor. It doesn't make sense to crank down the temp and then wear something warm. It's summer, after all.

I grew up as a kid in Miami and slept in a bedroom with no A/C... the house had a window unit, just not in my room. Yes it is not comfortable but yes, you can sleep if you get tired, you get used to it. Not worth complaining about if there is nothing you can do about it.

To each his own, but my cruise is all about relaxing, being away from it all, being at sea, and not having any worries. It's not about personal comfort and having everything just the way I like it. Someone who appreciates comfort above all else is probably going to do better with a spa vacation.

Being in a contentious situation and having to make multiple visits to the purser, when I could be up on deck soaking up the sun, it's just not a good use of my precious vacation time. I'd rather be hot. I'm going to drink enough to guarantee I sleep soundly even if my room is on fire.

I would be a lot more sympathetic to the situation if the temp had been in the 80s or 90s. I don't think the ship's maintenance staff would have inaccurate temp sensors. That's their job.

Also, the cabins are packed so tightly, it's hard to believe that one cabin would be a drastically different temp than the next one. They don't have individual units - a malfunctioning system would affect many cabins. In that case I think it would be an urgent repair issue. If just one cabin reported a problem, its less urgent, maybe even treated as a non-issue.

:):) Count me in on the AC too!!! I FULLY understand the need for cold at night especially.

To the OP, thanks for the review - it was completely balanced and your concerns were most certainly warranted. The temps your purchased thermometer were registering were not satisfactory (IMHO) on a ship. As someone pointed out earlier, you can always make the room warmer if that is what you desire but if it can't become cooler if something is wrong ... and with a 3 year old ... I feel for you!

Thanks for the review.

My wife and I keep our home thermostat on 66 at night in the summer. If you are accustomed to a cooler temp, a hot, humid, caribbean cabin IS A NIGHTMARE! (and I am speaking from experience)

I am with you jas1178!

I agree...a hot room drives me nuts.

Tell me about it, we live in Florida near Port Canaveral and I freeze at 70, we keep our a/c at 78 and sometimes I get cold at night. Maybe I am just so used to the HOT Florida weather that 78 feels cold to me. LOL

P.S. My pool has to be at least 85 before I will go in it.

This whole trip sounds eerily similar to my Carnival cruise a few years ago. Our AC was totally out for the first two days of the cruise. Think all of the cabins on main deck from the front elevators forward with no AC the first week of August in the Caribbean... We were also on a sold out cruise and even if we hadn't been, we would have been fighting with 40 other families for the extra cabins.

I would have been fine if customer service had been helpful and apologetic, but they acted put like we had caused the situation and were angry when we asked about compensation. Not to mention that when we boarded in Miami, one of the made up beds in our cabin had disgusting, thick, black hair scatted throughout and our cabin had a problem with sewage backing up through the shower (I have to say this was fixed immediately).

Anyways, at the end of the trip they gave us a measly 10% off our next Carnival cruise, which had to be completed within 12 months. Seriously...?

I wouldn't even think about a Carnival cruise again for years. It was probably an isolated incident, but the compensation and customer service left a bad taste in my mouth. I only recently started considering giving them another try. I hope my next experience is better-- and yours too for that matter!

Ya maybe the OP should of spent the time in the pools they are always about 65 degrees to cool off! Way to cold for my liking.A room at 75 to 78 is not that hot to me unless you are wearing way to many clothes to bed and have way to many blankets on.

Maybe the OP should move to the great white north of canada if his family likes the cold where you get to -40 during the winter months and are lucky to get into the mid 70.s for a few weeks during July.

Temperature really is a personal choice and a cruise ship cannot set individual room temperatures so 1 is at 65 and the next room beside it being 74 .Maybe the OP should always get a Balcony room where you can leave the balcony door open at night and get a nice breeze of fresh air if temperature is that big a issue with them?

Excellent point! I'm thinking the cruise line has figured out that cooling costs money and that it's not money well spent to cool rooms to the 60's when 99% of the passengers are comfortable in the high 70s.

For those who are not, try cruising to Alaska! Seriously, even in the summer you need a sweater much of the time.

Since I've shared just about every facet, I'll share something I forgot...

Got to the new room, and the first eve went to shower and there was no hot water. From the feeling of the handle, I think the control was just spinning and not actually controling the temp.

Engineering came within 10 minutes, took the entire unit apart and replaced the whole assembly. 20 minutes later water was back on and the situation resolved.

Seriously? I would have been irriatated to hear a request for compensation, too. They did quite a bit on the ship to address the complaints, which were - to me and apparently also to the ship's staff - of questionable validity.
