Thank you for your post and the link.

In Nov. 2007, DH and I visited Grand Turk on our Zuiderdam cruise. I enjoyed the on/off bus which made it easy to get out to see the lighthouse. Also, using the cruise center facilities was a good experience. While snorkeling there, I saw several types of fish. The long blue skinny ones were especially pretty.

I hope things work out well for the people living on the island. I know they were hit hard by the hurricane.

Thanks for the replies.

Seems as though this should be welcomed by the citizens.:)

Well, it will. The PM was stealing millions and had to be stopped.

Quite within Britain's rights to do this. It is a Dependant Territory and that is what is supposed to happen when thosse in chaarge are corrupt.

Heard about this.

Maybe the new Prime Minister will clean up the corruption and speed up the rehabilitation of the island.

Touism will not be effected.

There is not a new Prime Minister; the constitution has been suspended and the Goverment dismissed. The TCI are now under direct British rule altho' in practice it will be the Governor assisted by councils of locals who will be making the decisions.

And not before time; Michael Misick and his cronies were unbelievably corrupt and the country is now nearly bankrupt. The ordinary folk are welcoming this move which Governor Wetherall has finally been able to institute despite legal posturing by Misick - now Misick can be prosecuted and Wetherall can work toward financial stability.

The cruise port on Grand Turk was restored after the hurricane damage but many of the islanders are still living in poverty with damaged homes because Misick's Government were too busy enriching themselves to properly aid their own people.

It will be welcomed by a majority of its citizens, but not by its politicians - the crooked governor and police. will be interesting to see if Whitehall proceeds:)

The Govenor is not part of the corrupt lot... their Prime Minister is though.

Next stop Bermuda. Our Premier is very good friends with Turks and Caicos Prime Minister.

We are due a decision by Whitehall regaarding the acceptance of four Gitmo guys. The US won't have them but our Premier brings them here without informing Whitehall, our Govenor or even the members of his own cabinet!

The thinking is that he might force Whitehall to do the same thing they have done in Turks and Caico, scream blue muder when they do and then try to declare independence from Britain.... against the wish of 75% of the population who do NOT want independence!

Presumably they are aware of all the countries that have become independent from Britain and then realised that they have become much worse off.

It'll be interesting to see what happens here....we've been to Grand Turk on the Noordam twice...and it's on our itinerary in February. There's really not a lot to see...the best thing about Grand Turk is the beach at the cruise dock. Very nice...and a nice cruise terminal with shops and a Margaritaville.

Hope it all works out for the best for all the people there and in Bermuda also!!!

Man oh Man!! What a thread header to see when Grand Turk and Caicos is o your itinerary.

And to the person from Maryland, sorry cannot remember your name, who posted about the US. That was uncalled for!! That is like asking a Canadian or Australian if they regret their independence from England.

I think you missed the irony......

I for one don't think countries regret their independence from England.

Sorry, Yes, I did take it as a stab at our great Republic. Sorry if I read it differently. I thought it was a stab at us. Proud to be US and defending our country from what I perceived, apparently, wrong.

Back when Britain was offering up self rule to most of its colonies, some people of the Turks and Caicos made a move to join Canada to protect the island nation from exactly what is happening now. Self government deteriorating into corruption and thievery at the expensive of the people. Not sure of all the details, but it never came about.

As far as I know virtually all the Commonwealth nations...including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India and others all operate with a Governor General who represents the interests of the Monarch in the country. All of our laws passed in the elected House of Commons must be signed into law by the Governor General before it can be enforced....this is called "Royal Assent". It is all just traditional in most Commonwealth nations....but....it remains as a 'safety valve' for all of us should it be needed....as is the case with the T&C.

We're bound to hear a lot of complaining from other Caribbean Commonwealth nations over the steps taken in T&C...but...I suspect it is because the same kind of corruption is happening on those islands too. What the Foreign Office is doing is striking just a little close to home for some of these island politicians.

Next time you get off a ship in one of those island nations connected to Britain and you see the amount of poverty....ie Jamaica....ask your self where all the money you spend....and the money of the hundreds of thousand of other cruisers spend on these islands each year goes??? I suspect that not very much of it goes to the people.

This is only the first step in reclaiming the former colonies. Now that the US is turning Socialist, the true believers think it is time for us to regain our subservient relationship.

First T&C, then Bermuda, can Staten Island be next.

Remember you saw it here first.

My wife's sister's cousin's best friend's brother told us it all started when they took away the trays in the buffet at one of the hotels on Grand Turk. People can only be pushed so far before they rise up.
