Dress Code

Also stayed at the LunaHotelBaglioni in Venice. One morning, a woman came to breakfast in the restaurant in her sleepwear and hotel slippers. That was nice at a Leading Hotel of the World. But, no one should or apparently did tell her how to dress. Maybe some people need a wee bit of guidance unless we all decide night clothes are acceptable in the common eating areas because some people don't wish to shower, brush their teeth or get dressed.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just returned from a 11 day trip .I must say that 85% of the people were dressed according the dress code. The other 15% were awful. Jeans were allowed and not fancy designer ones, men in dirty sandles, and bowling shirts. Nothing was ever said to these people and they dressed this way for the entire trip. Some even sat there with their cell phones texting thru dinner. I asked to not be seated anywhere near one particular man.

We complained about this but were told that they cannot deny anyone entry to the DR because of what they wear. Why have a dress code???The dirty feet and sandals did it for me.

What rubbish they are telling you.

I have seen maitre'ds on SB turn many an individual away from the MDR because they did not adhere to the dress code. Maybe now there are no maitre'ds we will start and get these problems? Did you complain to the restaurant and or hotle manager?

The Maitre d' is the Restaurant manager.nothing has changed except we now have in addition a hostess in the restaurant who escorts guests to their table.

Underdressed guests will still be turned away if they do not conform to the dress code.

Of course there is still the odd rascal that escapes.

While agree that there certainly are some very nice looking jeans I think it becomes a matter of a slippery slope -- where does nice leave off and grubby begin? It becomes a judgement call. Thus I do think it is better just to say no jeans. I live in jeans much of the year here in cactus country so we very much look forward to dressing up on Seabourn -- and with the exception of my white jeans we have never worn jeans at any time on all of our Seabourn criises. Regarding nice restaurants and jean, we were in Lucas Carton in Paris a while back( dressed to the nines) having a lovely dinner until a gentleman came and sat at the table next to us in jeans and a sport coat. Sailor Boy was so upset I think it ruined his dinner. I tried to explain that many good restaurants were hurting for business and willing to let in almost anyone with the money to dine there.Still it was very disappointing. So, nothing against jeans -- just save them for home.

Why? Did the jeans change the taste of the food? Did the service suddenly go down hill? Did the air conditioning suddenly stop working?

Why would someone sitting at another table with jeans and sport coat have any effect on someone else's dinner?

Because it is the dress code. They could eat at the Patio Bar if they want to not dress property. If 85% of the people dress nice we should not have to deal with people who do not want to.

I complained to a few people, I even asked one gal personally how she was able to eat at the MDR with jeans on. Her answer was they would not dare say no to me.

He did not have a sports coat on.Jeans, sandles, and a bowling shirt.

Again, there are many price points and target audiences. Pick a cruise that suits your vacation style. But for those that choose ultra luxury, those lines should remain just that. That way people CNA dumb down or dress up as much as they desire. And no, most people in a gown or formal cocktail attire want to eat next to jeans and flip flops. No more than its acceptable to go to a formal wedding dressed in jeans. It's just not that difficult of a concept. Select a cruise that's right for you but don't infringe on other people's desired atmosphere. If formal or cocktail attire is not your thing, cruise Carnival or Disney etc. I thought cruising was going to be my next vacation of choice but --- maybe not. Maybe there are no cruise lines left that meet my expectations.

I find it amusing that anyone would choose a cruise line because of its dress code. To me that is the least important element. And for those who think it wrong for others not to dress according to their standards be aware that it will only get worse. Why? Because the luxury lines are actively seeking a younger demographic which does not care to dress up. Ten years ago SB brochures were filled with photos of men in tuxedos and women in long gowns. Try and find one of those in today's brochures. Times have changed, luxury lines have changed and attitudes toward what is correct have changed.

Wripro, whilst i fully understand your point of view, I am not entirely convinced that the age card excuse being wheeled out every time is actually the whole truth.

I have been travelling with Seabourn for around 16 yrs now, and am still considered as one of the younger members aboard. I have always dressed appropriately and enjoyed doing so, as have my travel companions. I have found the majority of younger SB passengers to be very well dressed. On the occasions that people have tried to let us say, push the boundaries of the dress code or indeed try to ignore it, they have been of an age group far senior to my own.

Does food taste different off of paper plates? Does wine taste different from a plastic cup?

To me,there is smart and there is sloppy whatever the dress code be it casual, smart casual, elegant casual, formal optional, formal, black tie or white tie and tails.

Attention to detail is the key in any dress code.

We have been traveling on SB for 14 years, the dress code has definitely slipped. Black tie and formal attire was the code for Formal night. I get that this is not the norm anymore. I can live with that. I cannot live with people not dressing at least descent for the main dining room. You have other options if you choose not to put shoes on. I also do not want someone texting all thru dinner.

This is a very clever analogy Joe as I think we all agree there is a difference and these items are only suitable for a casual barbecue :p. Therefore people dressed sloppily look better in a casual environment and not in the MDR with fine linen and china.

I am guessing the people currently replying to this thread asking for less sloppy attire are all amongst some of the younger people sailing on Seabourn. I know my husband and I are. I find that interesting and it doesn't support the argument that the dress code is aiming to appease the younger people. I know my nieces and nephews who are all in their mid 30's like to dress up to suit the environment. :)

franctic36 has pre-empted me on what I was going to say - the dining room on the Seabourn ships is very formal (rather cold looking to my mind) and the staff are all obliged to look very smart. I think the least passengers should do is wear clothes more or less appropriate to the setting, and bomber jackets and sandals for men is not appropriate. We cannot all be gorgeous, young looking and slender, but we can at least blend in with the setting.

I realise there are people who cannot see this for themselves, and sadly there seem to be more and more of them, not in any particular age group, who do not care about the impression they make.

I agree completely that bomber jackets and sandals are inappropriate attire. I hope that all of you who find this so offensive are being proactive and contacting Seabourn management to voice your objections. Repeating the same posts here on CC ad nauseum will not change a thing since it is Seabourn itself who must enforce its own dress code, not us.

Not that I have noticed. However, the paper plates don't tolerate the dishwasher too well, so they can only be used once. On the other had, if you drop a paper plate, it still work, while the china, lets just say that dish will never be dropped again. :(
