Just wanted to chime in about Tours by Locals - we've used them in many cities and never been disappointed. Guides custom tailor your tour to your interests and in my opinion are simply top notch. IMHO you can't go wrong with them.

Hate to disagree but at least according to the US State Department, the entire state is listed as Do Not Travel. Hope the authorities get everything under control soon.

We're in a Celebrity Suite in August and largely because of the vagaries of Alaska weather and the additional space, I'd go for the upgrade, assuming the upgrade cost isn't prohibitedly expensive. Good luck!
