tgg Posted March 8, 2018 #1 Share Posted March 8, 2018 We're on the Oosterdam transatlantic sailing April 3, which is the first one after the drydock. While it isn't possible to know whether all the drydock work will be completed in the alloted time, I wonder if some of the work can be expected to be done on this 15 day cruise. Does anyone have experience with a post-drydock sailing?
CruiserBruce Posted March 8, 2018 #2 Share Posted March 8, 2018 There are many discussions on the topic here. You are right, there is no absolute way to predict if the work can be done in time or not. Occasionally work does continue as the next cruise begins. Rarely is that work substantial. But, again, there is no way to predict.
Kamloops50 Posted March 8, 2018 #3 Share Posted March 8, 2018 Quite often the work that is done is things like carpets and paint touch ups. Sometimes cabins might not be finished.
KirkNC Posted March 8, 2018 #4 Share Posted March 8, 2018 While our personal sample size is small, we have never had any real issue with a cruise after a dry dock. The ships are constantly undergoing maintenance with or without a dry dock. We have had more issues with touch up painting and the fumes then anything else. Kamloops50 Posted March 8, 2018 #5 Share Posted March 8, 2018 On our last cruise, they actually changed the carpet , bed and soft goods in the ship.
Stratheden Posted March 8, 2018 #6 Share Posted March 8, 2018 We had no Crows Nest for 11 days on a 22 day Med cruise on the Zuiderdam in 2015. But that was a different dry dock. They were putting the new cabins in on decks 10 & 11.
mrmac Posted March 8, 2018 #7 Share Posted March 8, 2018 Yes this happens all the time after a drydock. Some people are comfortable booking these but we would not be because we have seen so many complaints about work being done, venues closed, workers around, etc. It depends on how much is being done for a specific drydock. Sometimes, it's way too much work for so short of a time.
tgg Posted March 8, 2018 Author #8 Share Posted March 8, 2018 Thanks everyone for the quick replies. We plan to have a great time and will deal with any inconveniences if and as they occur. From recent Oosterdam reviews, it sounds like any drydock improvements will be greeted with open arms by experienced HA passengers.
dag144 Posted March 8, 2018 #9 Share Posted March 8, 2018 We were on the New Amsterdam when come electrical work was being done. No problem at all. Another cruise on the Ryndam was a real bother. There was tile being chipped on the Lido deck pool area and the racket was very bad. Complaine to the front desk who agreed. We got a $500 credit to use on our next cruise. iancal Posted March 9, 2018 #12 Share Posted March 9, 2018 I think the chances are very good that work will be continuing. The real question will be how intrusive will it be.
Rare Copper10-8 Posted March 9, 2018 #13 Share Posted March 9, 2018 Lookie here; the goal of course is to complete all dry-dock work, especially the major/heavy stuff while in dry-dock so if that is accomplished, your answer is No When a ship is in dry-dock, there are twice-daily briefings with ship management, HAL superintendents, dry-dock management, and management of the many, many sub-contractors as to where the project stands, what's completed, what's still pending, ETA's, etc

I was looking for the things that people had experienced onboard when they sailed immediately after a drydock.
