mek Posted June 14, 2015 #276 Share Posted June 14, 2015 My husband and I took our first cruise together on the Mardi Gras in 1981. We had an inside cabin with bunks and the sink was next to our bed with the toilet and shower in a separate cubby hole. There weren't any outlets in the room and I had to go to a common room to blow dry my hair. The pursers desk was only open during "business hours." A slip of paper was all that was needed to get on and off the ship. I don't recall a buffet, but there was breakfast, lunch, dinner, midnight buffet and then smaller version buffet offered at 1:30 am. We're not big people, but back then we didn't miss a meal - not sure how we did it. Of course, we were much younger then and very active, so we worked a lot of it off. IFlyHarder Posted June 14, 2015 #277 Share Posted June 14, 2015 No....but I do remember the Baked Alaska parade in the main dining room with the waiters carrying the cakes with sparklers ablazing........I still have photos of that. Please tell us about the tomatoes....it might jog a memory. They were stuffed with nutmeg and blueberries. You could order them to your room as a special treat. momperson2 Posted July 7, 2016 #282 Share Posted July 7, 2016 We went on the MG April 17, 1983---honeymoon. First we were worried that we weren't going to make the cruise. The night of our wedding a huge snowstorm hit Michigan (no snow all season). But, because the storm hit all east coast, and our flight was all cruisers, the ship was held up. Yes I remember the "pee and shower" at same time. The great waiters, flaming bake Alaska. I also remember the lectures you got before getting off cruise ship in Jamica about boy buying any "ganja" (pot). Also, a funny story of a young lady who fell asleep on a deck chair, ended up with a stripe sunburn. The sun hit the teak and like a mirror reflected up. You could see her a long ways away. We went to Jamica, Cozumel and Grand Cayman. Had a great time
ljinnc Posted July 7, 2016 #283 Share Posted July 7, 2016 I was on MG in January 1991, my first cruise and I hated it. Sea was very rough, it was a 3 night Port Canaveral to Nassau and back. Tiny cabins, good food. I didn't sail again for 20 years, then went on a 5 night Glory and been sailing every October since, including this October. crusinpsychRN Posted July 7, 2016 #284 Share Posted July 7, 2016 Mardi Gras was my 2nd and DH's 1st cruise in 1977. He had long hair with curls so had to join all the ladies in that little room down the hall to dry his hair. LOL. That is his greatest memory of his 1st cruise. We loved that cruise. My only regret is that we did not get credit for that cruise and it's not part of our Carnival profile. If you have a picture or something you could send it in for credit. arpie05 Posted July 8, 2016 #285 Share Posted July 8, 2016 Mardi Gras was my first cruise in 1986. I got credit for it by sending in a picture of me and my family at dinner and it had Mardi Grad stamped on it. You also have to come up with an approximate date you sailed. miataman19 Posted July 8, 2016 #286 Share Posted July 8, 2016 (edited) August 1989..:) Sailed the Carnivale also in 1989. Wanted to sail all 3 of the original ships that year but never could get on the Festivale. Edited July 8, 2016 by miataman19

Did you do it under your VIFP and report it as a missing credit or do you have an email? I emailed them a while back and they told me I could get credit with a photo. Finally found the 36 year old photo and don't know where to send it. Thank you

This was fun reading through this thread. My first cruise was on the Mardi Gras (or gosh, it could have been the Carnivale). End of May, 1986....it was a three or four night cruise and I'm pretty sure it wasn't sailing out of Port Everglades......it was either Ft Lauderdale or Miami and it was definitely to Freeport and Nassau. I just messaged my old college roommate, whom I'm sure has photos!

Any how, go to Carnival Website, log in. then click on manage, then VIFP. From there on the left hand side look for Claim Past Cruises. click on that. Scroll down in the list if you dont see it, and pick Request past cruise. fill in the info then hit submit. From there I send an email to customer care with the photo, pretty sure they sent me an email first requesting it.. been a few years since I added one though. Cruisinfromvegas Posted January 19, 2017 #292 Share Posted January 19, 2017 I was a crew member in the early to mid eighties, casino dealer 22 years old, mostly on the Tropicale when she was brand new. But also worked on the Festivale for a bit....what a differance. Best time of my life. I loved those ships. Will be boarding the Splendor in Sunday, as a passenger of course. Back then the other lines thought of us as the "Kmart of cruise lines" would never last....ha ha ha
Eliot Ness Posted January 20, 2017 #293 Share Posted January 20, 2017 We sailed on her back in 1991 on a 3 or 4 day cruise to Freeport and Nassau. The ship was actually in fairly poor condition with the exposed wood looking worn and dried out. We had a port hole cabin and after one day the only lights we had that worked were in the bathroom......put in more than one request to have them fixed but it never happened. The only cruise we had been on before this was on the Premier Majestic (Big Red Boat) and while we loved that ship our experience on the Mardi Gras was not very pleasant. After Premier went out of business we came back to Carnival for a 7 day on the Sensation and loved that cruise and every CCL cruise since then. While I look back on the Mardi Gras as a neat bit of history, I think she was just getting a bit long in the tooth by the time we sailed on her. jkneern Posted January 20, 2017 #296 Share Posted January 20, 2017 MG was my first cruise too!! Your first is usually your best. Now 40+ cruises later I can say she got me hooked. What a difference then and now. I remember thinking MG was so big, now I'm not sure I'd want to sail on something so small. Really did love her. A few years later we went on Fantasy. Walking into that atrium was a wow factor.

pratzert Posted January 22, 2017 #298 Share Posted January 22, 2017 We sailed on the Mardi Gras in 1978, 7 days out of Baltimore to Bermuda. Someone else recalled the Captain was Vittorio Fabietti, and the Cruise Director was Greg Fucci (who was also the star singer/entertainer). Mr. Fucci, sadly, passed away last July. Captain Fabietti passed away in 2005. Both were super nice men.

almitra Posted January 23, 2017 #300 Share Posted January 23, 2017 TSS Mardi Gras was my 1st cruise...1979. I got credit for it with CCL by providing tons of info about the captain, crew, entertainment, and precise sail dates ( I did a back to back cruise in June 1979).
