I have just been looking at the Panama Canal Authourity web page,

and wandered onto the Tolls Charged section.

If I read it correctly , passenger ships pay a toll of

$120 per passenger berth.

I presume that is US.

So if Dawn Princess has 1981 berths

thats a staggering $237,720

to transit the canal.

Wonder if the cheque has to be cleared before they can pass through:D?

Heres a few more facts about the canal from the site....

*Since August 15, 1914, more than 960,000 ships have transited the Canal.

*As of August 26th, 2009, the Panama Canal Authority has a workforce of 9,703 employees

*Expansion will build a new lane of traffic along the Panama Canal through the construction of a new set of locks which will double capacity and allow more traffic and longer, wider ships.

*It takes a ship an average of 8-10 hours to transit through the Canal.

*Slated for completion in 2014, the Panama Canal Expansion is the waterway’s largest undertaking since it was built in 1914.

*A ship saves 7,860 nautical miles when traveling from New York to San Francisco through the Canal instead of the Cape of Horn

*As part of the Expansion Program, 46 million m3 will be excavated to

build the new Pacific Access Channel.

*More than 700,000 trees have been planted in Canal watershed areas.

*The new locks will use 7% less water per lockage than the current locks.

OMG..... the Panama Canal Authority won't go broke then will they?

Jillybean:rolleyes:

Yes, nice to see videos of Dawn Princess coming and going NYC.

Noted comment on video that Dawn is "such a small ship"!

She looks a big ship to me. How many passengers does she carry?

In american terms she is... I think she can carry 1950 - 2000 passengers

Yes, US$250,000 to transit Panama. A few months ago on pay tv there was a programme on Panama Canal, a lot of widening going on.

I note on the blogs, flat screen tv's are being installed and new carpets, already for the Carnival el supremos inspection at San Pedro (LA Harbour) I reckon.

Great vision. Ships do look so majestic don't they?

I haven't noticed before, but hasn't Dawn Princess got a short stubbie bow?

They should begin the transit just after 10pm our time ,8pm Sydney time.

Thats why we miss a lot of the transits as they go through while we are all asleep. Usually when you click on in the morning you can just catch them coming up to the last set of locks , San Pedro and /or Miraflores , if you are lucky and get up early enough.

I notice they are set to arrive at 5am local time, but the transit may not start till later, and will depend on the traffic for the day.

I hope I can get up and see them go through the miraflores gates!!!

according the richard the port lecturers blog he has to be on duty at 5am up in the bridge to start his commentary...

Is there a program that catches screen shots perpectually automatically.... ie we have the bridge cam up on the screen and it records it throughout the passage..

Joanne who is so sick at the moment with a head and chest cold....

Joanne, i am at work so cant post the link but if you log into youtube and type in Dawn Princess Panama canal, i am almost certain there is time lapse footage of the ship doing the canal...(i actually think its just the screen captures of the webcam edited together and made into a film) Still really interesting. :)
