If "non-smoking" is really important to you, read this

This is why these Boards are so helpful. We had 6243 booked for our upcoming cruise on the Equinox in January 2010. There was another thread back in April that discussed the smoking problem on 5 and the location. While 6243 wasn't mentioned specifically, it didn't take long for me to figure we'd be right above the "smoking lounge" so I gladly gave up the large balcony and moved to a higher deck.

Am I the only one who finds it quite disturbing that many of us have specifically chosen Celebrity over other lines because of a perceived "strict" nonsmoking policy only to find that they are actually pretty liberal in the amount of smoking areas on their ships? I noted this issue with the Equinox after I sailed on the first Caribbean voyage in November and obviously it is becoming quite widespread.

I really believe a letter writing campaign to X is in order.

This is exactly why I posted, to save others from our misfortune. It is such a shame too, it really is a great location on the ship and at a nice price considering the obstructions are so minimal. I think you made a wise choice though. What's a few extra feet on a balcony if you don't want to sit on it due to smoke? Enjoy your cruise!

And library lady, I doubt you are the only one who feels this way. I always read that Celebrity monitors these boards so maybe they will see how many are concerned with this issue. I certainly let them know on the post cruise questionaire and have also discussed it in my CC review.

Hi again Lori,

I am very glad you noted this on your questionnaire; I did the same in November. I really found the smoking right outside the solarium to be an inconsiderate location for nonsmokers. It rendered the lovely hammock in that area completely unusable by many and required me to hold my breath while walking through this area. I wondered at the time, and your experience seems to reinforce this thought, that perhaps the number of Europeans on board has some relation to the amount of smoking and X's catering to this demographic. I certainly hope this will be reconsidered. The US trend is to discourage and even outlaw smoking. I know our state (IL) has a lot of problems but we do not allow smoking at all in any restaurants, bars and even casinos, which is wonderful.

I never thought of the European demographic, but that does make sense. On our 10 days pre-cruise throughout Italy, we were stunned by what percentage of the population appear to be smokers, and how many times we were surrounded by smoke in all too public areas (for example, waiting in line to take a cablecar, somewhere you couldn't exactly get away from it without losing your place in line). Again, we LOVED Italy and it didn't ruin our vacation, but is noticably different from the relatively smoke-free environment we now enjoy in the U.S.

Good information. I'm going on my first Celebrity cruise this year and have been doing a lot of reading here on the boards. I did see this mentioned before about port side smoking. I don't know if it's the entire port side. I had a cabin booked on deck 6 and specifically asked for starboard because of the smoking section. Now I've moved up a few decks and should have to worry. While smoking never bothers me on Princess (so far), I certainly don't want one of the few smoking areas right under my balcony. The big selling point of Celebrity is smoke-free balconies, so it's good to know what to expect.

*Starboard side of the Sun Deck, Deck 14

We have a Sky Suite on the Resort Deck, starboard side. Is smoke going to be a problem for us as we are one deck below, not too far back from the bumpout? One of the factors in booking the starboard side was that I thought all the smoking areas were on the port side. Silly me!

I believe cigar smoking is on the starboard side back aft at the Sunset Bar area. You shouldn't have any problems where you are located.

We have cabin 7239 on Eclipse for the westbound TA in late October. I specifically booked that cabin, on the hump, and it has to be port side to get the sunshine on the Atlantic crossing. Now I really need to know if the smoke is likely to be drifting up 2 decks and further forward than the OP stated.

In the UK it is very costly to change cabins. It involves paying a hefty fee, cancelling and re-booking, I think. Oh dear!

What is grousing??????????? Smoking is o.k. if you want to. But please don't do it in or around my area. I have paid my fare and I should be able to have clean air as well as someone who wants polutted air should have it.

I'm so glad I saw this (and other) messages about this topic. For our cruise on Eclipse that leaves on July 10, we were booked in room 6257, just a few rooms aft of 6243. I saw all these threads just today, so I was worried that our room was going to be unusable. Also, I have asthma, so I wouldn't be able to breathe with all the plumes of smoke.

So, we called Celebrity, and they said that the cruise was basically full, and that there was very few rooms left. They said to call the travel agent ASAP to see if there was a chance to get a new room. We called our travel agent, and (praise the lord :P) we were able to have our cabin switched from port to starboard side.

Cuttin' it close was the understatement of the year (), but I want to thank everyone who has let us know about Port Deck 6's smoke problem, you made our vacation A LOT more enjoyable, I'm sure! :)

You just made my day!!! Ever since first joining CC, I have been reluctant to start a thread or even post, due to those that just wait for the chance to jump in and rip on you if you have anything negative to say.

I am a positive person by nature and Celebrity is a wonderful cruise line, but honestly, this board is to inform people, not just cheerlead. I was so grateful for everything I learned here, and I am just happy to realize I have helped a few people enjoy their vacation more. Thanks for all the feedback.

Oh I know the feeling, I've been a member here for, forever, and I rarely post because I think I have nothing good to say, or someone's gonna crap at me for something. You know, you should post more often, you've got a lot of good stuff to say that has helped out not only myself, but a lot of people!

But really, you just made MY day, heck, you made my vacation! :)

You're welcome for the feedback, and thanks again for the heads up! :)

  • 9 months later...

Has smoke from port side deck 5 designated smoking area been a problem on higher decks - say cabins 8279-8285? I spends hours on my balcony, but hate the smell of smoke. Didn't think to look at this until this really helpful post. Thanks, tennisbets.

"we do not sweat the small stuff"

Sorry, but before I had breathing problems, it was "small stuff" to me too.

It is now unbelievably painful to see how I gave such short shrift to people who were bothered by smoke when I was a young smoker whose lungs didn't hurt.

I apologize to everyone whose lungs I affronted (and injured) and I hope you can take some small comfort in knowing that "what goes around {does indeed} come around."

Not looking forward to the future with damaged lungs.

We are new to Celebrity and are booked on the Constellation next spring on deck 6 port side. Since the issue was on the Equinox, will there also be smokng on the deck 5 port side of the Connie? Should we change our cabin to starboard?

These boards are so helpful! :o

Yes, the Connie has a smoking area in the same location on deck 5. You might want to move to the starboard side.
