Both class ships are wonderful in their own ways. Itineraries drive our choice - well except for the MV's - but that's a special circumstance.

The only problem with this poll is that many of us regular O cruisers have not yet been on Marina. Therefore none of the 3 choices really apply to us. Doing this again in six months or so may give a more accurate consensus.

Having just gotten off the Marina I have to say both size ships have good points & bad.

I think it is personal preferences more than anything

That said

we prefer the small ships for a more intimate feeling

Marina is lovely but just not our preference but if a great itinerary came up I would sail on her again

There are many things about Marina I'm going to miss when I get on Regatta this Summer. On the other hand, there are a few things about the R ships that I missed while on Marina.

 

Neither has the perfect cabin layout, yet -- I like the closet on R ships and the bathroom on Marina, except for the tub -- I'd rather have a larger stall shower. I don't mind the shower on the R ships -- if the water sloshed out, the entire bathroom could become the shower!

 

I'll definitely miss Red Ginger, Jacques, La Reserve and Privee, and I sure hope they have a grilled meat station Regatta's Terrace Cafe, plus I really hope they have the Kobe beef burger and surf & turf in Waves on the Regatta, or else I'm really going to miss Marina!

 

It's controversial, but I like the casino bar on Marina -- the R ships are like a comfortable English manor house, but even those might benefit from a little jazzing up in a single spot.

 

I like the seating in the theater lounge on the R ships, but I like the stage, lighting and especially the sound system much better on Marina. I don't think the R ship entertainment will ever match Marina -- the stage is really too small for dancers. Maybe they'll prove me wrong.

 

I like the wider sun deck above the pool on Marina -- there is room for lounge chairs and walkers, unlike the R ships, and there is more shade under them if you want to get out of the sun.

 

The library is not a pretty on Marina, but there are two fireplaces, comfortable chairs, and more intimacy once you are seated within the stacks. There are scads more semi-private spots to sit and read or have a conversation on Marina. They were under used; I don;t think folks have discovered them, yet.

 

I don't drink coffee, but if I did, I would miss Baristas when I am back on the R ships.

 

Bottom line, no preference. Each is what it is, and each is enjoyable for different reasons. When I was on Marina, I tended to forget about the R ships. I bet, once I'm back on an R ship in Alaska, I'll tend to forget about Marina.

 

Thinking about that last statement, Marina may have a slight edge if everything else is equal (itineraries and such).

We had been on the Regatta (2004) and Nautica (2008), but have not been on the Marina, so we did not vote. We don't have the money to try the Marina or Riviera in the foreseeable future, sad, but a reality!

I will definitely vote when I return from the Marina post the 3/28 crossing. But without even having sailed yet on the Marina I can say with some certainty I would miss Jacques and Red Ginger. I'll know for sure when I'm on the Regatta in late May/June.

I pretty much agree with Don except I wasn't too fond of the purplish (?) lighting of the casino bar. I liked the offerings in the Marina's library and the wonderful Barista's bar and the fact that the library was too small to close off for private functions/meetings (so we always had access to the books).

 

Marina, having more tonnage, seemed to be more stable and solid than the R ships. Even though we went through some rough days on the maiden voyage, I felt very secure on the Marina and DH didn't get as seasick as he would have on the smaller ships. I think the new stabilizers worked wonderfully. If it goes to Australia/New Zealand, we might take it. We wouldn't want to go through/across the Tasman Sea on one of the R ships.

 

The R ships are more intimate and we enjoy them as well. All in all, the different ships have their pluses/minuses and the major reason why we choose to book in one versus the other is the itinerary.

Marina`s maiden voyage was great, but after reading Don`s reply I´m also in

two minds what i like best, but after my next cruise on Marina 06 May I think I`ll

have a notion, but I think it`s a compliment to O that at least we show how much

we like this product.

I left the "Book of Advertisements" in my stateroom. Wasn't worth the extra weight to lug home.

I don't care about execs on board. I don't care about freebies. I just want the traditional Oceania experience when I board next week.

Judging from the poll so far, voters prefer the old to the new by 2:1. If instead of designing and building the new ship, Oceania had chosen to "copy" (perhaps with minor improvements) a fourth R ship (which would be much cheaper without the redesign) and increase the number of berths by one-third instead of doubling it (or tripling it as originally planned), they might be much better off. Also, they need only to add new R ships one at a time, perhaps every five years, depending on market development. That will be a lot "safer" economically.
