Low Sanitation Score - Epic

There is a big difference between a general lack of procedure or a few slip ups that do not meet the "rules". Not saying that almost all of these rules are not bad, but there are always a few that are just hard to totally follow. And sometimes there are rules that are just plain stupid.

As to the fecal matter in a pool. Did not say what happened, but dealing with IGNORANT passengers taking diapers in pools is an ongoing problem that slams the ship in spite of what they try to do.

Do we look at the scores? Yes. Concerned? Not too much. After all, a sickly ship will cost the cruiseline millions of bucks with or without the rules.

I just spent a week on the Epic, and nothing I saw, nor nothing I ate would make me worry in the least. The Epic passed the inspection, and NCL took steps to insure discrepancies would not be repeated. That's good enough for me!;)

We took the ship's tour of the Epic last November. The food preparation areas are truly impressive. There are separate rooms for beef, chicken, lamb and pork. All were spotless - as were the bakery, laundry and even the recycling area. There will always be slip-ups, but compared to land based restaurant kitchens the ship's areas were as clean if not cleaner.

Anyone concerned about the low score received by the Epic??

I live in Las Vegas. Every Wednesday, they publish the results of the restaurant sanitary inspections. You would be amazed by the number of casino places that get high numbers of sanitary problems. Yet, the tourists continue to come.

Knowing how incredibly detailed (read: picky, but for a reason) those evaluations are - I feel their score, while not an "A", was not too bad. Don't get me wrong, I would prefer to see higher marks, but an 89 would not stop me for one moment from considering a particular ship. Actually, that score was earned 4 weeks prior to our 2/26 sailing - and we made out OK!

Germs always bother me! However, I have always believed NCL strives in the war against germs, considering all factors. Actually, I was surprised, as most of you, to discover the lower score for the Epic. However, I believe that the bigger the ship, the more problems. That being said, I am sure they will get this issue resolved immediately. On another note, I was extremely happy to see that my favorite ship, the Dawn, aced, with a perfect score.

A solid kick in the head can be a good thing every now and then.

I am certain NCL is addressing these violations.

(We have done galley tours and while they look sparkling, we're really not seeing what the inspectors check for.)

When we were on epic there was hand sanitizer everywhere, and crew was cleaning railings, door pushes, etc. non-stop. I was very impressed. I'm a bit surprised at the results of the ratings, but I didn't see one thing that would keep me from going back on this fine ship.

I agree with Mike. We were on the Epic in September last year and it was NON-STOP cleaning with the crew. You didn't dare leave your table with food anywhere unless someone was there to watch it. Otherwise the crew was cleaning it up and wiping it down. They were constantly wiping down everywhere. We even watched them re-varnishing the hand railings outside the pool area twice while we were there. These employees were QUICK to clean everything and I swear our room steward cleaned our rooms 3 times a day!

Like Mike said, hand sanitizer everywhere as well.

I would never hesitate to go on her again. I'm sure if there are any issues, NCL will definitely address them quickly. :)

It is not the ship's crew. It is people thinking hand sanitizers replace washing your hands and young people not even thinking about cleaning after they go to the bathroom, push the elevator buttons, put their hands in food to taste. Yes, I have seen it.

A low score allerts the company and forces them to step it up a couple notches....to me, this is good.

I guarantee the next score on that ship will be far better. In fact, I bet ALL NCL ships will wind up being better because of the low score on the Epic.

If corporate decided someone needed to be called out on the carpet for this, who would it be? HD, Capt, or?

My guess is the F&B manager - though depending on the severity, who knows how far up the line they would go!
