Wanting a tour from Puerto Limon

We will be taking a cruise from Fort Lauderdale to the Panama Canal in April. I would like some help as to tours that we might take as tour guides in Pureto Limon. We have traveled to lots of places and saw lots of things in Costa Rica last April on a Caravan Tour but we did not get to Puerto Limon. I understand the city itself is unsafe to explore so I was thinking of going to Cahuita NP or doing the Aerial Tram Ride. Can someone help me with who would be a good Guide and how much they cost. Thanks

The town is not prosperous or particularly interesting, but it is not dangerous. I walked along most of the grid of streets and avenues in downtown Puerto Limon without feeling the least bit unsafe. I arranged some internet time and drank a beer or two at a table outside a bar and watched the people go by.

There was a craft market set up in the port area which was of no interest to me.

My wife and kids took a ship's excursion to a sloth sanctuary, petted a sloth and took a short boat ride to look for wildlife.

I took a tour with this guy, Charlie Soto: http://www.okeydokeytours.com/tours.htm

and it was good.

Our roll call also set up a tour with okeydokey and had a great time. They combined two of their normal tours (river boat and rain forest), and tho it was a little rushed, they did a good job of getting both done.

We took the 4x4 off road adventure last Jan. It was great! Don't let the name fool you- we rode in a 4x4 truck that has been conberted to a tour bus w/ AC, large windows for viewing and comfortable seats. No throw away clothes or goggles needed. Guide and driver were very friendly and informative.

I took the same tour and also enjoyed it. Especially when it forded a river. The bus chassis was from an old soviet missle launcher with a new Ford truck motor that the owners had custom built. You get to see some pretty interesting jungle and wild life. Not to mention close up views of how the locals live. If they still have this tour, take it. Then try the city near the port. It didn't seem dangerous at all.

I don't have the information on this computer (it's on hubby's) but we had a great tour in February. We went, with 2 other couples, to a Del Monte banana plant, a local fruit market where our guide opened a pod containing the seed to make chocolate with, we had a boat tour of the Torregossa Canals; we stopped at a local beach, had a quick city tour and then we asked him to take us to a local restaurant for lunch (that was extra). It was on top of the hill and we had a great view of the harbor. If you are interested, I could get the name for you.

We never had a problem with walking around Limon and think some of the negative posts about this city are from folks just not comfortable in 3rd world countries. It can be easy to confuse poverty with danger, but this is not always the case. As to tours, several years ago we had a great time by privatly booking a ZipLine excursion (online) from a jungle resort called Almonds and Corals. This eco resort is located about an hour fromt he port and they sent a car/driver to meet us at the port and drive us to their resort. The drive itself was fascinating since we got to see a lot of the countryside (even made a stop to look at some banana trees). Once we arrived at the resort we had 2 instructors (one was an American) who gave us a quick course on how to Zipline and then we climbed up a ladder to a tree stand about 50 feet over the jungle. Their zipline facility had about 13 stations and at times we were well over 100 feet above the jungle floor. The final segment ended on a beach which was quite nice. The best part of this entire day was that it was just DW and me (no crowds) and we even did the zipline with just ourselves and the instructors. We also got to tour the jungle resort which was quite an interesting place far from the commercialism you find on cruise excursions.

I'll be on the April 9th sailing from Ft. Lauderdale. If this is the sailing you are on, you should join our roll call. A few of the posters are setting up some tours and last I looked (yesterday) there were openings.

Thanks all for your ideas. I'll check them out with my traveling companions.

This sounds like the one I took. It was a neat tour! Loved the "vehicle". (don't know what else to call it. it sure wasn't like anything I've ever seen before.)
