Rock Music?

While I appreciate piano bar music and broadway shows, is there any location where you can listen to 60's, 70's music? I acknowledge that there are many people that love Sinatra and that era, but boomers are cruising in greater numbers and some of us would like to hear music from our era as well. Come on, a little rock and roll never hurt anyone! ;):D

So, is this an option with Celebrity or do I need to bring along my iPod?

Thanks for your thoughts!

When I was on Solstice and Equinox they had an excellent Acapella group that did a lot of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

There was a fair amount of rock when we cruised the Eclipse in December, much of it was played in Quasar. There was also 70's and 80's music trivia. I have very eclectic tastes in music....I listen to everything from Mozart to Nine Inch Nails and really wasn't disappointed in anything I heard around the ship. I will tell you that I was REALLY (!) surprised when I heard the N-Trance version of Staying Alive while out at the pool. Link if you haven't heard it.

I really was pretty shocked to hear a rap song....I'm not a huge fan....I only like certain ones and this happens to be one that's on my MP'3 player. I always bring my music with me though....there are times I want to listen to it in the room.

There is a party band that will play various venues including poolside in the most afternoons and one of the large lounges at night. The same, or another large lounge will also have DJ music on other nights and/or after party band sets.

The quality and repertoire of the band has varied considerably in recent years but they generally play popular dance music from the 70's forward.

The ship usually also has a 50's night and sometimes a 70's night that the band plays at which sometimes involved the ship's entertainment staff dancing and doing a little bit of a show in the lounge along with you.

Hi,

The house band played a variety of styles of music in the Sky Observation Lounge in the evening. Not to everyone taste.

To be on safe side, bring your iPod.

As Larry noted, the "party band" was playing some at pool side. That was "fun, fun, fun" as the 60's rock groups sang. There was a decent variety of different music options around the ship. For good or bad reasons, there was not a set, specific schedule that offered the same music in the same place night after night. They kind of moved things around, gave variety in the offerings, etc. I would probably do it differently, but I can also understand the reasons for variations on the offerings and locations.

The orchestra on our ship was very, very good. During our "up country" tour from Kotor, the Music Director for the ship was along with us. It was interesting talking with him during our day. He’s been with Celebrity for seventeen years, leads the orchestra, plays the piano and supervises 38 musicians on the ship. The music was very nice on the ship and we found out that the trombone player with the orchestra played with Doc and the Johnny Carson band for many of the Tonight Show years.

See some of my visuals below to illustrate these many options.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Did a June 7-19, 2011, Solstice cruise from Barcelona that had stops in Villefranche, ports near Pisa and Rome, Naples, Kotor, Venice and Dubrovnik. Enjoyed great weather and a wonderful trip. Dozens of wonderful visuals with key highlights, tips, comments, etc., on these postings. We are now at 59.670 views for this live/blog re-cap on our first sailing with Celebrity and much on wonderful Barcelona. Check these postings and added info at:

Many times at the pool in the afternoons, the “party band” was going at it with great tunes, adding to the fun and excitement around the pool area. Just like done by some famous California pop groups, we were hearing “fun, fun, fun” underneath the sun!!:

Here’ are two examples for some of the “swinging” action to band on the 4th floor, central court area nearby the Solstice's main glass elevator bank. There were not large numbers dancing, but those that did, had fun and we enjoyed watching the "show"! They mixed the variety of groups playing in this area.:

This is the lead singer of the “Cheek2Cheek” group that specialized in some jazz, big band and “songbook” pieces". Here, they are playing in the evening in that 4th floor central court area.:

We were on the Eclipse the same time we had a world class Russian string quartet playing all over the ship. On night they did a classical set in the main theater. Now I am not in to all that high pitched wobbly voice operatic type stuff but I decided to go and you know what, I even liked some of it. Had I not been on the cruise I don't think I would have ever bothered to go to something like that. So it just goes to show just how varied and dynamic the music can be.

Worst thing about the cruise on the Eclipse was with no doubt the music, it was just awful. I know its about taste but I got to the stage where I felt it was almost unfair with the constant bland renditions of middle of the road songs. You also on some of the decks couldn't get away from them the best you could do is shut your eyes and hope they go away.

Its a bit like if they only served the same dish for every meal the whole trip. Just a little more modern music or a different style on some of the nights. The disco music was also totally "safe".

The "house band" somehow managed to make every single song sound the same, I think this was their USP.

However, the worst was the Acapella group. They suddenly appeared and did the same same 4 songs everywhere. I know from talking to some of the crew they couldn't stand them either. The only mercy was that after 12 minutes they stopped.

Apart from that it was a great trip, and a great ship such a shame that Celebrity have taken such a bland approach to their music. The comedian on the other hand he was fantastic

Part of what you note is correct. In Ohio, we have the Cleveland Symphony. It's ranked as one of the top five in the world. If you want great musicals and theatre, you go to Broadway or the West End in London. These ships don't have that quality. Part of it are the cost realities, but the other honest factor is about the wide, wide variety of people on these cruises. Lots of different countries and interests are there. Not just people from the U.S. and UK. It's hard or impossible to satisfy every interest and need. They do a decent job trying to serve up for such a wide range of folks. Much depends on what you expect and need. We were satisfied that it worked for basic needs. We know where to go when we want the better, best or highest quality music and perfection.

I think that may be my problem. I'm not a fan of sanitized music. I prefer it raw and live. That being said, I'll listen and try to enjoy what is presented and use my iPod to listen to what I like. Pity they don't have something a bit edgier, but I understand why they don't offer it.

I think in my indirect English way, what I am saying is that they don't cater for all. They appear to only serve one taste in music and no effort is made outside of that.

Its just not what I would call "modern luxury", more elevator musak

Celebrity do need praise for constantly employing musicians. Most of the Celebrity fleet have in excess of 25 professional musicians on board.

On a recent Infinity cruise a fellow passenger told me that most other cruise lines employ on average 6 musicians and an array of synthesisers to make up the numbers.

However if your taste in music is anything like mine you will need your iPod!!

Real R&R musc doesn't fit that well into the typical scene at a club bar or a piano bar.

How about a one night R&R show in the theater with the band set up on stage, not buried out of sight and let them do a variety of music from Chuck Berry to the Stones. A real Rock and Roll night.

From what I've seen of the Celebrity bands over the years they all look like they would love to cut loose one night and show us what they can do besides cover music from Broadway shows.

Just a thought and of course OMO.

The number of professional musicians on our ship was 38. That was what the orchestra leader shared with us when he was with us on one of the tours in Kotor as an escort. He was from Pennsylvania and was very good, interesting.

I enjoy and appreciate a broad range of musical styles...but agree with some others...bring your iPod along too !

I could lend out my iPod! You might even hear a bit of Bob

Thanks for the offer, but I have plenty of classic rock loaded up on my IPad, which I'll be bringing along. My taste ranges from Zeppelin, Floyd, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Steely Dan etc... I don't care much for anything newer than mid nineties music at this point. Prefer late 60's, all of 70's EXCEPT for disco!!
