philbob84 Posted April 3, 2012 #1 Share Posted April 3, 2012 I enjoy this line of questions so I thought I would bring it up what would you CCLer's like on the next generation of Carnival ships? I asked this over at Disney and will be asking it on a few more threads (that don't already have this going on.) I personally think the industy is gonna settle around the 141 thousand ton ships orderd for P&0 and Princess but i also see new smaller ships for other lines, and around the later part of this decade Carnival will order new ships. just my thoughts. glrounds Posted April 3, 2012 #2 Share Posted April 3, 2012 I think they'll redo some ships ALA DESTINY. The Conquest Class is badly in need of some reconfiguring. Terrible layout of entertainment venues. ENTIRE Lido Deck enclosed in glass and steel. Ridiculous . . . why even bother going to sea, nobody can experience it.:( If it weren't for the SPIRIT class and the SPLENDOR and newer ships, I'd have left Carnival long ago.
golfadj Posted April 3, 2012 #3 Share Posted April 3, 2012 Supposedly next class will be smaller than Dream class.
vwrestler171 Posted April 3, 2012 #4 Share Posted April 3, 2012 Supposedly next class will be smaller than Dream class. Modified Conquest class? Or more along the lines of Splendor?
Rare crewsweeper Posted April 3, 2012 #5 Share Posted April 3, 2012 Supposedly next class will be smaller than Dream class. Modified Conquest class? Or more along the lines of Splendor? That'd be my guess too. Probably looking to begin replacement of older ships. I think the 2.0 refits of the Conquests ships and the reconfig of the Destiny/Sunshine are a good indicator of what Carnival is looking to do. The current era of the mega ships is probably over for most cruise lines. Economically not as feasible as they originally thought, especially with increasing oil prices. Just do a compare price with RCCL's Oasis and the Dream or Magic. Add in all the extras you have to pay on the NCL ships and the increased/better "amenities" aren't necessarily worth it to many potential crusiers. Plus with the Concordia event, there's a drop in cruisers so getting a bit harder to fill bigger ships.
beachbum53 Posted April 3, 2012 #6 Share Posted April 3, 2012 I hope there will always be a demand for the smaller, less-than-mega ships, especially for those of us that don't need all of the amenities, such as rock-climbing walls, skating rinks, etc. The smaller ships can get into some ports that the bigger ships can't. Along with that, I wish that when the new mega-ships are built, I wish the itineraries of some of the smaller ships didn't get changed to the shorter (3 & 4 day) itineraries. I've got nothing against the mega ships, and I realize that they're probably here to stay. But bigger isn't necessarily always better.
Rare jimbo5544 Posted April 3, 2012 #7 Share Posted April 3, 2012 My guess would be a modified Spirit class, like the HAL Nieuw Amsterdam. Add in some of the latest Carnical features and another spa deck added on the top and of course the funnel.
Rare jimbo5544 Posted April 3, 2012 #8 Share Posted April 3, 2012 And also a continuation of the the Sunshine class refurbs.....Victory and Triumph next in line.
tlmorga2 Posted April 3, 2012 #9 Share Posted April 3, 2012 I think that CCL will continue to utilize the Fantasy class as its workhorse. Completing the remained of the Evolutions of Fun upgrades on a couple of the ships that have to be completed with all the upgrades. Following project sunshine I could see the line also working on the Triumph and Victory with similar upgrades. From there the Conquest class will also see some minor upgrades, however I dont see them going much deeper after the rest of the 2.0 upgrades with the conquest class. One group that hasnt seen much work but gets alot of praise is the spirit class which I think will be next in line for 2.0 upgrades. New ship orders will probably not happen for a while. Many lines are following the new trend of beginning to extensively update ships. Look at RCCL and the Rhapsody. Just my thoughts.

One dining room only and more fee based restaurants. 2. No big 50 foot TVs on Lido deck. Hate those things. 3. Ditch the disco era ship décor for something softer and easier on the eyes. 4. A promenade style layout like the EOS ships on RCI
Julz226 Posted April 3, 2012 #11 Share Posted April 3, 2012 As a parent with a young child, I'd like to see some place (aside from Camp Carnival) that is toddler friendly. My 2-year old decided he was NOT going to go to Camp Carnival (we finally got him there by the 3rd day) but as a result, I spent a LOT of time in my cabin or riding up and down the elevators. I took him out very early in the morning and late in the afternoon to run around on the lido deck, but we got dirty looks for taking him into the lounges to listen to music (he loves to dance), the promenade outside the casino was just way too tempting (flashing lights and bells = can't keep him OUT of the casino) and the pool decks were just way too crammed full! How about a space (doesn't have to be huge) like the indoor playgrounds at the airport or mall? Somewhere that is contained and child friendly where we can hang out with the little ones that don't go to Camp Carnival. Said place needs to be where we can see the light of day and should have bar service :) Trust me - Most of the moms want a drink too, but it just feels way to depressing to sit alone in the cabin and drink! A splash pad type area for the kids in swim diapers would be nice too since we're not allowed in the pools!

hermitstyle Posted April 3, 2012 #13 Share Posted April 3, 2012 The Conquest Class is badly in need of some reconfiguring. Terrible layout of entertainment venues. ENTIRE Lido Deck enclosed in glass and steel. Ridiculous . . . why even bother going to sea, nobody can experience it.:( I think you should re-sail a Conquest class ship again, because I can assure you that not all of the outside decks were enclosed in glass. Yes, the sides of Lido deck are, but it also has the buffets and other decks on top of it. Would you rather it be a steel wall or just magically have deck 10 and higher float above the Lido deck?
philbob84 Posted April 3, 2012 Author #14 Share Posted April 3, 2012 There seems to be a call for more smaller ships both of the really small and mid size ship. i think the sunshine rebuilds are going to be very successful because Carnival has like 15 ships evolved ships based off the Destineys design so they gotta keep those ships fresh as equally sized or larger new builds will become increasing cost prohibitive. philbob84 Posted April 3, 2012 Author #16 Share Posted April 3, 2012 slightly off topic question but according to Wikipedia the Carnival Magic is currently Carnivals flagship, does that mean the whole corporation or just CCL?
BigDoug Posted April 3, 2012 #17 Share Posted April 3, 2012 There was a hint of things to come in Host Mach's review of the recent Bloggers Cruise. See Post #208. I asked John about new builds... We've known for some time that Carnival will not build any ships larger than the Dream Class and I think that's a wise move. However, we also know that Carnival will need more ships... what to do? John hemmed and hawed a tad and one could see that something was trying to get out but didn't have the avenue it needed. So, he said to me, Mach, if you were to ask 'Might Carnival build a ship in excess of 90,000 tons with the new FunShip 2.0 enhancements and an upgraded passenger capacity' I might be able to answer that. I did and he did. Though a tad vague, he did say that he suspected the next generation of ships to be 90,000 plus tons (around the size of the current Spirit Class...) with all the goodies and upping the number of cabins. The bump in the number of cabins would make them more profitable, the added goodies would make them more attractive and the fact that they are smaller ships would make them more efficient and capable of handling the less large markets. Didya follow all that? Good. If not... well... I'm not sure what to say.
gstewart Posted April 3, 2012 #18 Share Posted April 3, 2012 slightly off topic question but according to Wikipedia the Carnival Magic is currently Carnivals flagship, does that mean the whole corporation or just CCL? Surely the Magic is CCL's flagship just like QM2 is Cunard's flagship. I expect the Breeze to take over "Flagship" role when she debuts in a few months time. elcuchio24 Posted April 3, 2012 #19 Share Posted April 3, 2012 CCL isn't likely to go bigger. They're doing well with their current business model. RCI debt for those big ships has hampered their stock growth in the past few years.
philbob84 Posted April 3, 2012 Author #20 Share Posted April 3, 2012 I could see them taking advantage of the new 141 kt design for PO and Princess although I think its more likly Cunard would take that design the CCL, they are all part of Carnival corp it was designed for them but i don't know if its there "property." Heirloom Posted April 3, 2012 #21 Share Posted April 3, 2012 There was a hint of things to come in Host Mach's review of the recent Bloggers Cruise. See Post #208. THAT is not positive for passengers. The beauty of Spirit Class......most fully understand after travelling on one, is that you really never feel SARDINED......plenty of well spread out places to visit. Compared to Dream and Freedom in our experience......it's night and day comparison. Increased number of cabins built into Spirit Class type ship? YUK !
