What is the #1 reason you Cruise?

Easy way to get extended family into one place at one time, catering to different wants and needs but also allowing us to be within 800 feet of each other for a week

I think this said it best for me, too. It's we women who always have to host/work/help at family gatherings on land, so it truly is a vacation for me, too. DH once asked me why I liked cruising so much, and this succinctly covers it.

"I like to be with the spousal unit. And she cruises." LOL, literally!

DH & DD9 have a fear of flying, so cruising is the only way to visit someplace warm and tropical while still being sensitive to their anxieties. We live in CT and can easily drive to the ports in NY/NJ/MA.

Cruising is so easy and relaxing (which a vacation should be.) Unpack once and the ship takes to you from port to port. I love not having to cook or clean and being truly pampered. I also agree with pp that having DH totally disconnected from his job is a huge perk. The kid's clubs give DH and I a couple hours each night alone together, so we can recharge our batteries as a couple as well as enjoy family fun togetherness.

I like to unpack once & your hotel moves along, plus there is nothing like sitting on your balcony with wine in hand & watching the waves quite mesmerizing.

Thata exactly what I love! Maybe champagne instead of wine but I just feel so RELAXED!

Disconnecting dh from his job.

He is on call for the puter systems 24/7/365. At his mother's gravesite last week they attempted to call him!!!! He actually turned the blankety phone off til that evening before calling back and dialing in.

When we go on a cruise, he can't dial in and fix the problem. They can't reach him. Granted, he usually walks into a disasater after vacation, but doesn't everyone deserve some down time?

After the last week of ups and downs, followed by a 36 hour marathon of work, ALL I can think of is another cruise. I even booked another one yesterday, though haven't added it to my sig yet. Winter of 2014!

Instead of "Calgon, take me away!", it's ,

"Norwegian, PLEASE take me away!"

Ditto every word of this! Well, except for mother's gravesite. It is so nice being where there's no possible way of them contacting me. :D

I love a moving vacation. I love the feeling you are constantly moving and traveling to another destination. You dont have to drive, you dont have to cook, and you can swim, gamble, or do whatever you want. It is just exciting.

P.S. It also helps I live next to the port of Miami. I dont have to fly anywhere to take a great cruise ;)

Lucky, lucky you, David!

I agree. My last cruise was stern and that was even more so. It is downright hypnotic!

Damn, how can I be forced into picking just one reason? Well the answer is that I can't be forced to do it so I'm going to give a few of my reasons:D

1. The ocean. I love nothing more than being on a ship sitting on my balcony in the evening. Love the sound, smell, motion - everything!

2. I love that you get to visit a few other countries without having to pack and unpack more than 1 time!

3. I live in Canada - think winter. The Caribbean is so much more civilized with that no snow thing happening! :D

What a difference a couple thousand miles makes. I live in Arizona. Think Summer. I cruise to escape the heat, although that didn't work so well in the Mediterranean last September. ;)

a cruise is a perfect way to see more from the landscape/the land/cities than to sail on a yacht or to stay at a hotel ... it's never boring, it's always amazing :)

It is that feeling of "ahhhhh" you get when you book the cruise and then the time in between planning, reading and thinking of that wonderful time ahead.

I love the feeling of:

Being pampered

Not having to plan meals, cook or clean up

NO WORK

No phone calls unless I make them from a port

Time is our own; we go as a couple but we can go our separate ways if desired and neither of us minds doing our own thing

We really do freestyle - do not make a lot of plans for on board but since we are going on the Epic in November we will book shows ahead of time

My DH's favorite is the spa package - he totally misses it if we are on a ship that does not have one. I love it too but just not as much as him

Casino at your doorstep (oops that one can get expensive)

Aside from the casino, seeing how much vacation we can get for our dollar. On a land vacation, except inclusive ones, you are constantly having to decide where to go eat, seeing how much you spending, etc.

I love getting up from a wonderful meal, thanking the waiters and then knowing no bill is coming - tipping $12 per person per day is great for me. We still tip extra for extra service but it takes the anxiety out of how much to tip

Well I have gone on too long - can't wait.

By the way, my least favorite thing is the last day and that feeling that it is "over" for now.

But retirement is in our not too far off future and we hope to be able to take advantage of more last minute cruises when jobs do now weigh us down.:p:p:p:p:p

When I plan a land vacation, I tend to try and have things "to do" almost every minute of the day. If it's Yellowstone we're up very early to be into the park and wildlife watch around dawn -- and we don't return back to our lodging until it's dark. If we're somewhere like Disneyland it's going from one ride to the next, until I end up totally exhausted.

On a cruise, for some reason, I don't feel that compulsion to have something "to-do" at every minute of the day. I guess it's because I know there will be something to see/watch/participate in if I want and I don't have to plan it. If I'm not interested, I don't feel guilty at all about taking 1 or 2 -- or sometimes even 3 naps a day.

Therefore, I come back from a cruise feeling totally relaxed, whereas other vacations leave me needing a day to recover from my vacation. I guess that places me in the relaxation category :D

My number one reason is the same as a few others, being able to see so many places yet getting to unpack.

I've done lots of land trips for a night here, two nights there, for a week or more and never fully unpacked because I wasn't there long enough. Of course things always went missing, and then I'd have to unpack everything to find something (like my phone).

I love getting my luggage and unpacking everything, knowing where it all is and not having to think about packing again till I'm ready to go home.

Aside from that, I love the way the rocking of the ship puts me to sleep.

One reason, huh? OK....lets give it a shot. ;)

All things considered, the #1 reason that I cruise is that I've found it is much more desireable than swimming between all of the ports.

Like+1

All of the above plus - dark nights. We live in Central London so we never get to see stars. Switch off the balcony light and stargaze with that final drink before bed. That and the elemental pleasure of the sound of the sea.
