No Comfort Food on RCCL's New Menu

I cruise both lines and I do not care.

I miss my land vacations where I would do my homework, pick the best restaurants on the island and eat top of the line food.

Unfortunately, my kid got bored with those and now I am stuck on a ship. :)

I cruise for the ocean, spa, casino and my balcony. That is all I need to keep a smile on my lips.

What a silly thing to be arguing over.

I am not a Carnival Cheerleader by any stretch but "sliders"????

I don't know how "sliders" ever made it to regular and upscale restaurants. They do it here as well. I remember "sliders" were called that because that's how they (this is gross) came back out after you ate them. A disgusting term referencing poop is now the preferred professional name for a food? LMAO The world is going crazy. No seriously, for the longest time the term "slider" wasn't a good connotation. It was something you ate when you were wasted and hungry, then paid the price for it in the bathroom later.

Crappy little hamburgers designed for drunkards are now popular everywhere and folks think its and upscale snack. LMAO

No way they came back up easily!

Ever since Chili's and Applebee's added them they have been "gourmet" ;)

Trendsetters!

NO... they were called sliders because of anti-German sentiment after WWII. I'm guessing you are not a fan of White Castle? Too bad. The patty was created so it never needed to be flipped while cooking... they were slid directly onto the bun. :)

Little Tavern would have a special of 10 for a dollar! The pickle was bigger than the patty.

So they are only putting back what they were the first cruise line to take away.

On my last RCCL cruise (1 1/2 years ago) there was shrimp cocktail & escargot only 1 night and no lobster just crab legs.

They were the first to cut back.

- Baked Lasagna (baked in it's own individual dish) vs Mac and cheese

- Beef Sliders Little Hamburgers

They were also the first to charge for the steak.

What is so great on RCCLs new menu.

I generally don't order the comfort foods on Carnival cruises -- well, maybe except for the fried chicken if nothing else looks good to me -- but I applaud the line for trying to offer something for everyone. Some people don't like to eat anything out of the ordinary and that's all well and good for them. There will be people cruising on Royal who will complain that everything was too fancy and all they wanted was some plain down-home cooking. They probably appeal to a lot of kids too.

P.S. I'll be on a 16 day transatlantic on the Mariner this fall, so I'm looking forward to seeing what's offered.

When I saw your picture I was startled. I am sure I have met you and you were a dear. We are VIP..cruise out of Florida..so far just to the Caribbean....We sail other lines too..mostly Princess and HAL. And I agree with your comments. If they don't have a swimsuit on..or a nasty tank top with tattoos all over their arms.....and their manners are passable...what people chose to eat for dinner I don't care. I tried the Plank Steak on the Fascination and the Freedom...in Feb and May of this year. It was cooked perfectly. Delicious. My husband does the fish dishes a lot and he never complains.

Carnival has great appetizers.

HAL...has the best food at sea to me. But then......there is not much else to do. Their four cheese mac and cheese........first time I ever wanted to pig out and order more, more, more. they should name it that..MORE, MORE..because that is what you will think. AND their ice cream..served by a staff person..who will put sprinkles, nuts, whipped cream on to your heart's delight....but again. You can only eat so many times a day....other than that..what do you do? everyone is bed by nine....and My DH and i are usually in by ten or so..but on HAL we are quite the Night bugs. The ships are beautiful too. Fresh flowers. Nice.

Never understood why people must trash the other cruise lines, many without any recent cruising experience on those lines.

Agree. Only sailed CCL and RCI, so I have no comments about the other lines as I only have read comments about each. Even that would not be enough for me to comment since I haven't experienced them myself.

I have to applaud them for realizing that they needed to do something about their food.

We enjoy both Carnival and RCCL and found them very close in amenities and service.

What's hillarious about your post is you are complaining about burgers (when RCCL serves nasty sliders) and food quality (when Carnival is basically universally recognized to have the supperior dining between the two cruise lines). Keep up the disinformation campaign tho, lol ...

You said "when Carnival is basically universally recognized to have the supperior dining between the two cruise lines."

Really? As evidenced by what? What is hilarious is that you don't know the difference between fact and opinion. Facts are facts- if you were to price the basic foodstuffs on RCL, you'd find that they are more costly. Filet Mignon is a much better cut of beef than a flat iron steak.

Tell me, which is more desirable:

CCL mac N cheese or RCL crab legs

CCL flat iron steak or RCL filet mignon

Which do you think costs more? Which would be more popular?

Curious as to your comparisons...

Why did you not include lobster to crab? (seafood to seafood)

I guess no one told him that he didn't have to even ORDER it much less eat it.

Here we go again..Carnival vs RCI cheerleaders. I have been on both like 8 times in the past 5 years and here's my opinion.

When it comes to MDR food they are in the same leaugue, but bufftet on Royal Caribbean wins hands and hands down and better quality too!.There is no comparison. As a matter of fact my cousin just came back from the Valor July 2 sailing and she told me that she was a bit disappointed in the food and especially the buffet.

RCI charges more for their cruises and they keep doing it, so with other words people are willing to pay more for a more upscale experience and let's be honest, it is a more upscale experience. If you are a Carnival cheerleader and don't want to see the difference it's up to you.

Yet another debate about this purely subjective topic, and yet again -- interestingly -- the term "nutrition" doesn't come up. Not once.

I know nothing about RCCL or any other cruise line's food, just Carnival. I can't introduce anything more or less educated about which has better food (as if there were such a tangible thing). But I will say that I found it easy on every Carnival ship that I've been on to eat a healthy diet with lots of protein, fresh veggies, some whole grain, and a small amount of fruit. Yes, a little inappropriate snacking here and there as well. At any rate, how can people spend five pages chattering about stuff that is often high-glycemic, diabetes-inducing, carbohydrate slop?

The bacon mac & cheese with chicken breast is one of the best dishes Carnival serves. Have you tried it?

hey scgamecock......i love the bacon mac and cheese. Definitely in my top 5 of favorite things to eat on Carnival

Okay people this is just sad. I am a big Carnival supporter and have always cruised with Carnival but it is not helping the case to plead that the "Mac and Cheese" is good. Now come on. On our first cruise with Carnival I had Shrimp Cocktail every night, A wonderful steak not that piece of flat tire that they serve now, also had Duck Alagone. Among many other great items. All of which are no longer on the menu. I have seen the menu go way down hill.

I sure wish they would redo their menu like the one on RCCL

I liked the Mac & Cheese too. I never ate shrimp cocktail every night when they had it....to many other apps to try and I can't make a bite of steak go down my throat, let alone duck...I'd be gagging. To each his own. I'd prefer Carnival to keep some comfort foods on their menu for the days nothing else looks good to me....but I really wouldn't mind some crab legs :D.

Comfort food or not, if the food is bad news it doesn't matter what you order.

I Have sailed rcl Liberty of the Seas twice and found the food in the MDR lacking the first time. I was surprised it was much improved 9 months later.

My last CCL cruise on the Glory last summer the first night or 2, I was disappointed with the food in the MDR. Then again I was not tempted to over eat, lol. I took 2 cruises on the Glory last summer 4 or 5 weeks aapart and the difference in the food was hard to believe. (they had changed the menu as well from the 1st to the 2nd cruise.

I will never forgot on one of my 1st cruises that was on the Celebrity Century. Over all the food was good (this was about 12-15 yrs ago). I went to the midnight buffet & was really happy to see lobster meat. But it was a shock on the first bite, it tasted and chewed like rubber.

That's awesome! I don't care for shrimp, but he really enjoyed it every night on our last cruise on Dream.

I thought I remembered reading here, but not sure, that one of the cutbacks on Carnival included now charging for espresso and cappuccino in the MDR. Is that true? (Not a huge deal if they are. It was just something we thought was a nice touch.)

I prefer mac n cheese, meat loaf and ribs to veal, crab, and sea bass. Wasn't a fan of baked alaska (I thought it was nothing more than ice cream cake, honestly.)

I'm a creature of habit, and my habit are common foods you can get at home ( Although there's no mac n cheese at Dennys, unfortately.)

I like the menus on Carnival. Reading them online I feel confident I have something I can order every night, without ordering the same thing night after night.

I don't see a reason to knock either menu. Differnt lines, different price points.
