Here we go again: ESPN

In 2008, I was on the Majesty the weekend of the SEC championship game between Florida and Alabama. They made a point of putting the game on TVs in the various bars, as well as the cabins.

I think the cruise director was behind this, since every time he made the announcement, he finished the announcement with, "Roll Tide!"

Princess has two versions of ESPN in their in room lineups. One is the international one and the other is ESPN 2, which has the regular ESPN 2 lineup and sometime carries games from US ESPN main channel.

I don't see why anyone should have a problem with someone wanting 3.5 hours out of a 24-hour day to watch a big game.

You are right, I do remember watching a NY game on my Princess Cruise in April; however, I do know it's all about the number of persons WATCHING the game in the venue. If the number of persons exceeds 5, then the venue has to pay a fee to ESPN and the NCAA. Granted its not the National Championship or the Suoer Bowl, but technically they're supposed to (even with a Commercial Satttelite Account).

My recommendation is that the OP contact a Bar Manager and get it OK'd the day before to ensure it can be watched, as well as get there early so the bar knows they're there.

He already weighed in when I told him about this thread. He said he felt sorry for your wife that you put unimportant things ahead of her.

Happily married 31 years :D

Was that the only week they had cruise??? She should have known better looks like she didn't take his feelings into consideration.

Let me jump back in here and defend my wife, who is wonderful, giving and we are very, very much in love. I am a very lucky guy. She was not being inconsiderate at all. In point of fact, we were going to go all together as a family on the weekend of 9/28/12 as that is a bye week. But this was the first year that our daughter went away to summer camp and my wife missed her terribly. She mentioned in passing that this could be a mommy/daughter weekend and once our little girl heard that, she was sold and was very excited. I begrudgingly gave in as we have been talking about a trip for just the two of them for quite some time. Quite literally, I can count the number of days my wife and I have been apart on one hand. I will even schedule business trips so she can come along. With this being college football season, what better time for the two of them to get away. Plus, my wife is AWESOME at getting deals on cruises and the deal she got for the weekend was very good.

It was not until we started thinking about how much we will miss each other that we both had second thoughts. She did nothing wrong and if there is any onus to be had, it is on me and my love of this time of the year. By the way, our daughter said if I show up I am in big trouble. She really wants this time with her mom.

BTW, thanks to everyone for all the support :)

we have cruised during nfl season and were hardly disappointed with them showing the games!!! that is a priority! we all nearly threatened to leave the bar when they tried to show soccer instead of the nfl game!! we all got up to leave when the bartender changed the station! it was a pretty big weekend that Sunday!! on a recent cruise, the eagles were playing primetime on a Thursday night and the game was showed on the big screen on the pool deck! people go on vacation to enjoy themselves and to have fun! my fun INCLUDES watching a game when it's on!!

You shouldn't have to defend your marriage on a message board because you enjoy your football team. Enjoy your family, your cruise and your football team. :)

People who want to impose their priorities on other people scare me sometimes. Football is a week to week passion play and lots of fun for fans who tailgate and support the team. The way I see it is that you get to watch your team and be at sea at the same time - double bonus. Do you think these people who are critical of you also criticize anyone for spending hours in a casino on a ship (as if feeding money to a machine is more enjoyable than a big college football game on a Saturday or NFL Sunday )?

My wife would like me to go on a cruise with her this weekend on Royal Caribbean, but because I wait all year for college football season I told her that 9/8/12 is a bad day for me to cruise. I will not miss the Texas A&M v. Florida game. Now before we get into a discussion of priorities, I was wondering if anyone knew if the ESPN aboard the Majesty of the Seas was the same soccer-centric ESPN International that plagues, I mean is featured on, most cruises?

I assume it is but I cannot find the schedule for this channel. I looked on the ESPN website and they do not even list "ESPN International". Rather, they have a number of international channels who's schedule can be found here: http://intltv.espn.com/on_air/tv_listings. I see that the game I want on the regular ESPN and the 'ESPN2 Caribbean', but are either of those the one on the ship? With my luck...no.

Any insight here?

That's right...the SEC expanded with Texas A&M and Missouri joining

this year. They are history making events. Cruise ships leave all the time.

But, thankfully, we are in the DVR, time shifting, era.

As far as TV on Majesty....flip a coin. We have seen soccer and

NHRA drag racing at sea on ESPN. Never could figure it out.

Big Play-Off ,NFL, games are usually shown...in my experience with Royal.

I always write on the survey sheet that they need a 'real sports bar'

on their ships to increase bookings during football season.

Those surveys are 'still under review'.

I'm not any sortof "die hard" sports fan and certainly not to the point that being able or not able to view a sporting event would impact my scheduling of a vacation. All that being said, even I am dissappointed with the quality of sports viewing opps - can we at least get a good Sports Center type highlights show, or even a print-out of final scores? I am on vacation and try to avoid the distractions of internet - I would just appreciate a simple way to stay up to date.

Of the sports taken "too seriously" football seems to me to be the sport taken most "too seriously. When the Eagles were on their string of losing in the NFC Championship game, I watched local news coverage of a fan leaving the Linc, turning to the Linc and yelling, with tears in his eyes, "YOU ALWAYS DO THIS TO ME!!!" ...at the Linc. C'mon buddy, Annie said that the sun would come out tomorrow and I'm sure that it wasn't the building's fault. You owe it an apology.

Why is that? DH and I live for football season and have gone on a Super Bowl cruise - so much fun! On our 14 night Hawaii cruise last November/December, Princess had all of the football games on MUTS and the area was packed for every game.

Nothing is more important than football in the fall - n-o-t-h-i-n-g! :D:D:D

Yeah what she said.

I guess when I said, "before we get into a discussion of priorities" I had hoped to preempt the rushes to judgement.

But you have to realize that by NOT sharing these additional details, AND by starting your post with "before you rush to judge..." you are setting yourself up to, in fact, be judged. I mean, why would you say "don't judge" unless you thought that perhaps your actions would appear to warrant judgement? Not trying to argue, but you did kind of bring it on yourself!

But I did have the misfortune to live in Northern VA for the last 12 years (just moved back to the promised land 2 months ago) and UVA and VT cannot be mentioned with the likes of the SEC. And so, if you did not go to an SEC school, you most assuredly do not get it

UVa has never been a football school. VT on the other hand, has one of the most successful football programs in the country, when you look at winning seasons, bowl game appearances, etc.

Trust me on this. There is nothing wrong with a man that doesn't watch football. especially college football. Happily married for 25 years to one of them. :)

I agree. My man doesn't give a hoot about football, but he indulges my love of the sport. He keeps the cold ones coming when I'm watching so I don't have to miss a play, and busies himself planning out next cruise/vacation. There's something to be said for that! :D

Justify it however you want.

Thou dost protest too much. God's sport? Are you freakin serious? I was in church this morning and the subject of football NEVER came up.

I almost laughed out loud when I read the above post, but then the realization that OP actually believes what he wrote made me feel sorry for his family and him. And I think he knew exactly what he was doing and expecting when he posted.

I'm a football fan but cannot in any way identify with being so obsessed with it that it could affect my family travel plans IT'S JUST A GAME! Not even a playoff or important bowl game:rolleyes: Good grief:confused:

When my son scheduled his wedding, he made sure ahead of time that it didn't conflict with a WVU football game. Both my wife and I have had season tickets for many years and that is one of our priorities. We have also been on over 20 cruises, and try to avoid missing any games whenever possible. We are both avid fans.

OOOEEE :D:D Bob and Phyl

More

When my cousin scheduled his wedding on the day Alabama played Auburn, none of my AL cousins (who are legion) showed up. In fact, no one from his local family showed up but his own parents and siblings.

When my family cruises in the fall, I recognize the HUGE sacrifice my husband has played by forgoing his teams' games (I'm a fan too--just not a superfan). ;) (And not that we were in any way, manner or means headed toward the Superbowl in the past, uh, decade or so. STILL!)

I don't know, it seems to me that part of real, selfless love is recognizing and respecting the things that may be important to your partner that may seem silly or trivial to you (as when my DH accompanied me to see "Wicked" during my recent bout of obsession with it.) So many haters here!

I'm speechless, it's a bunch of millionaires playing a GAME.............

True..but it's a game we love, the first thing we had to do when we moved to Ohio was install a giant satellite dish to watch the Steelers, we don't miss Steeler games for anything, people that know my family know if you want us at an event, you won't schedule when the Steelers are playing. It is what it is. One of the worst days ever for me, I had run a race In Florida and was flying home on Sunday on the Steeler-Charger playoff game, long story short, flight delayed, worst flight ever not knowing what was going on in the game.

"HUGE sacrifice"? You have got to be kidding me. This statement makes football fans seem like idiots.
