Options / Prices for FCO to Rome, to Civitavecchia, back to FCO

Hi PGHFlyer, or anyone else familiar with Rome area transport,

Are the 8-14 Euro/couple shuttle buses run by private companies? Are there specific companies that are better than others, and how long do they generally take to fill up? It seems that with 2 people, this is half the price of the express train or airport shuttle--am I reading this right?

Are there many stairs at Civitavecchia station? We don't have mobility problems, but will have big suitcases. Also, is there an option other than walking to get from the train station to the port, and vice versa?

Thanks!

FCO Bus is operated by Terravision (just google them). They also operate buses to Rome's other airport (Ciampino/CIA)

At Civitavecchia, it's likely one flight down, and then under the platforms, and one flight back up; that's what it was for us back in November. Not really tough; and worth it when you realize how much cheaper it is than a private transfer. Also worth noting, the regional trains leave from a platform a fair walk from the main entrance of Termini station (if you're leaving from Termini). There's a moving walkway on the basement level of Termini, which is pretty easy, or you can get dropped off half way along the south side of Termini station. If you're taking an express train, ignore this comment.

In addition to these options (thank you pghflyer for posting) - what about the free shuttle port bus I've seen people talk about for Rome? I'm confused as to why people would pay to get to the port if there's a free shuttle taking people to the port, am I missing something? So two questions:

1. What exactly is this free shuttle and how do you access the shuttle service?

2. Where does it go to/from?

The free shuttle is only in Civitavecchia, and then only from the port entrance to the ship (not the train station or Rome.) So, you'll need to make arrangements from FCO or Rome to Civitavecchia.

If you elect to take the train the station is about a third of a mile from the port entrance where you'll get the shuttle.

I have read several posts on different threads of people having luggage stolen when using Terravision. All bags including carryons must be stored under the bus. People have loaded their bags and boarded. The doors to both sides of storage are left open until the bus is loaded and someone else can easily come along and remove bags.

It is reported often on tripadvisor so I would reconsider this company. The other bus service, Atalia, does not seem to have the problem so some think it is friends of Terravision drivers.

No personal experience here but wanted to pass this info along.

If you are concerned you can stand outside until the driver closes the luggage hold. Large carry-ons (21") will need to go in the hold, but we carried our smaller backpacks and duffles on the Terravision bus.

This past December we were amazed/disgusted when using the free shuttle at Civitavecchia as someone pulled out another passengers luggage to place their own in the storage. The bus pulled out, and there sat the luggage. As a general rule I think one member of your party should stay curbside until the storage bins are closed on any public transit.

I have used very few transfer companies (anywhere) that require pre-payment, more typical in the US if anywhere though. This is why you have to balance getting an affordable rate with someone you know will actually show up since they aren't really obligated.

I agree! I also much prefer to use companies that do not require a deposit or any form of prepayment.

This has been a very helpful thread. I booked a transfer frommy hotel at FCO to the port with Rome Cabs. They do not require a deposit or pre- payment. Should I worry about this?

Has anyone se used them?

Use the search function & see if your chosen company is positively reviewed. You can also check-out your company on TripAdvisor.

Pghflyer - you are a godsend! I can't tell you how helpful this thread has been. My family of 4 (with 2 younger girls) will be going to Rome for 4 days before a cruise, so we will need all three options: the airport to hotel, hotel to port and then port back to the airport for an 11:50 flight.

In your experience, would it be beneficial to book all three with one company?

Glad to help - I can't stand the idea of ineffecient duplication of effort (part of my day job)!

Yes, IMO you will be best off to book with the same person. You may get a lower rate (get a quote for all 3 at once) and they will be more likely to show up since you are giving them a lot of business.

Personally, I am trying JumpLimousines next week based on a few other CC recommendations and will share feedback on my return.....but if money is not a factor, the most popular is definitely RomeCabs and RomeinLimo. Consider posting to your Roll Call and ride share if you are interested in bringing the price down, we had a nuimber of takers.

I look forward to seeing your feedback on JumpLimousine because I, too, have booked them for both an FCO-Rome and a Civitavecchia-FCO transfer in November, based on information from this thread.

Would definitely be interested in your feedback on JumpLimo. Have booked Roma Cab but will look into Jump. We have an early flight out of Rome and need someone dependable and punctual

Have a good trip. Will be looking for your response when you get back.

excellent thread....thanks for the info... a couple of questions.

If you book 2 or 3 transfers with a private company (such as romecabs) like FCO to Rome, and Port to FCO and get a discount - do you pay for each leg to the driver, or in total to the first driver?

Do any of these private companies take credit cards, or is it all cash?

Has any one used "share a shore excursion in italy" - they adveritce on CC and their website says they now offer transfers. Prices are good and you use their website to line up fellow travelers for airport transfers.

Hi!

First, thank you, pghflyer! I wish I had seen your list first. I guess it is never too late since my trip is in April 2013.

Yes, if you book multiple transfer, many companies give you discount rates.

My question is has anyone used Faciletaxi.com. I found this company has cheapest rate for a family of four with 8 suitcases to do FCO to Rome round trip and in between with a Rome and Civitavecchi round trip for 324 Euro. Romecab's quote is 410 euro, Romeshuttle 390, Limoservice 410 euro. Is Faciletaxi.com trustworthy?

Here is the link to the train booking. I just used it and it worked for me:

http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=c79686605528a110VgnVCM1000003f16f90aRCRD

There is also a good site to view the schedules from the cruise port at:

http://traintorome.maxonthenet.altervista.org/?lang=eng

I could not find a schedule on the trenitialia site and so I had problems checking on the trains but the second site above shows the stops for each train.

What a great post this is.

We wanted to avoid a rush to the airport so we are staying a day in Rome after the cruise and flying out the next afternoon.

So I am looking for transportation from the cruise port into Rome and I was wondering if anyone has taken the trains into Rome?

First, is there a good way to get from the port to the train terminal in Civitavecchia?

Second, it looks like the intercity trains do not start until about 9 am into Rome but the regional (commuter) trains start at 6 am and get into Rome Termini station at about 7:30. I am wondering if it is reasonable for someone with luggage to take one of these regional trains or should we wait for one of the intercity trains?

Same question with the metro once we get into Roma Termini. Is it reasonable to ride the metro with luggage? We are staying at the Rome Marriiott Grand Hotel.

thanks

150Euro – Private Car with http://www.starlimousine.eu/en/transfers

IN GENERAL, Romeinlimo and romecabs seem to be the most used by CC members right now. The other companies listed a people I saw recommended on here and on TA.

*Booking multiple transfers with the same company will often yield additional discount

*Posting on your roll call to try and share a ride will bring down your per-person costs

Very helpful site on transfer information in general, with some photos:

Excellent post, one last question.. I am considering the train options for our transfer from central Rome to Civitavecchia Port. What is the situation for luggage? Which of the two 2nd class trains would be best for luggage in terms or storage on the train and ease of use. We are not big packers (like some cruisers!), but it is a cruise and so our group of 4 will each have a large bag, plus carry on.

thanks.

I just booked RomeCabs for FCO pickup to hotel, hotel to Civit and Civit to FCO, individually the came to 330 but all together they charged 310. I also liked that they let you use Paypal so I don't have to have all that cash with me.
