Room key

Your room key is like a credit card. It will not hurt it to get wet. If you aren't comfortable leaving it in a small beach type bag on your chair, tuck it into your bathing suit. There are also waterproof holders for money and other items. They sell them here on Cruise Critic. EM

I keep mine either in my pocket or in a tiny purse that I carry (have to carry one because of DH's medications).

I never worry about setting my purse down anywhere on a ship. I even use it to reserve a table in the Lido while I am getting my food.

I don't like things hanging around my neck. If you bend over to look at something, it can get caught in something and jerk your neck.

It's not really a problem if you lose it, because virtually all ship (possibly excluding one or two of the older ones) have electrnic swipe-card doors, so the key doesn't have your cabin number on it.

On some ships the number on the card is merely a code, on others its the cabin number.

BTW, don't keep the card next to anything electronic, such as your phone, I-pod or camera. This will interfere with the magnetic strip on the card & eventually the card will stop working.

If it fails when you board or order a drink, the info can be entered manually, but it won't open your cabin door. You can get a replacement at no charge from reception, but its inconvenient at best.

By far the most popular method is a lanyard around the neck given my observations. Personally I hate them. I have used a small bifold business card holder for at least 10 years now. One side holds the card and the other has some small bills for tipping. I leave it in my shorts if I go for a dip. Never had a problem on ship or shore.

If you use a lanyard, I recommend you let the ship's guest services punch the hole. If you do it yourself, you might invalidate the card if you punch the wrong spot. The casino can also do it for you, since most slots now have a place for your ship's card to earn points.

Lanyard also.

I also experienced my card's magnetic strip being de-magnetized from my camera hanging from my neck. Now my camera hangs from a strap that goes over one of my shoulders, & the camera hangs at my waist.

this is good info but if someone steals your card wont they have access to your benefits (assuming yours are higher than theirs)

like if i had the unlimited drink sticker on the card, it would be more valuable to someone who didnt get it. or perhaps i paid for some specialty meals.

though i guess if you noticed it after just 1 hour in the pool and went to guest services they can deactivate it instantly. still i wonder...

also i guess thats the only thing you need to really worry about at the spa/pool since you dont need money to eat or drink. i guess i overly worry about such things. but the key does seem really important

I keep mine in my bra night and day. It is easy to get and my husband doesn't have to stand up to get it out of his pocket.

What was your bra doing in your husband's pocket?

No, don't answer that :D

Ship's customer services can punch a hole in your card so you can clip it to a lanyard. And ship's shop will sell you a ship-branded lanyard - overpriced but a nice souvenir.

Smokers will find that the card slots nicely into the back of a cigarette pack, though it's a bind trawling thro trash bins cos you forgot to switch it when you went on to a new pack :o

The card getting wet isn't a problem, but just like hotel keycards they can deactivate if kept in a pocket next to a phone or camera or other electronic device.

I have a simulator in my butt, right by my right back pocket. You have no idea how many hotel keys it took me deactivating before I figured out what the problem was

Bonnie J: you can tell us. You do that to keep the romance alive in your marriage, right! :D

I like getting his card out of his pocket too! He had fun getting my bra to put it in his pocket!

We have been married for 54 years, never had a fight but do get pissed at each other but not much. We were 17 and eloped, they said it would never last but it certainly has.

We are cruise-a-holics, Diamond on Carnival, Platinum on Princess, something on NCL and RCCL- have no ideas what on Costa or Celebrity. We have been on ships of 5 cruise lines that no longer exist. 100+ cruises since 1984!

What keeps us happy? Loving each other and carrying more about each other than

ourselves!

Sorry this is off the subject but had to answer you!

Sounds a bit like us, but we're only at 35 years, didn't elope but everyone said don't do it you're too young, people were ringing her on the morning of the wedding telling her to call it off.

I was off work with a back injury that the Drs said would put me in a wheelchair (It did 30 years later) we were both not working.

Now we have had some fights, I think at times we both thought about walking away, the problem with that is that we are in love.

Haven't had as many cruises as you either, but we are trying to catch up.

I bought a mini-purse on a long strap that holds the key card and camera. It does not get in the way in the buffet, and don't have to keep it on the floor at dinner. This also allows us independence - if my husband is not with me, no problem, I am not locked out.

Does anyone have suggestions on the best way to keep up with your room key while on board? Specifically at the pool. Bring a lanyard? Some sort of keychain? Thanks!

If you don't have a pocket, and don't want to use a lanyard, you could get an arm band I.D. holder. This is just one of several listed on Amazon:
