Fire on Carnival Triumph. No engines, running on emergency generators.

Don't have the facts in front of me but I believe Carnival has the largest number of ships in the cruise industry. Also their average age is the oldest. Large quantity and average quality = more potential for problems.

Not an acceptable excuse for having safety problems but a contributing factor that is making it hard for them to keep their name out of bad news.

I live in a 111 year old house.

It is in excellent condition.

Why?

Maintenance, maintenance, maintence.

Has anyone seen any pictures posted from the passengers on the Carnival Elation of the Triumph? I figured eventually someone would post pictures. I have a very close high school friend and his dad on the Triumph. I am sure they are fine and making the best out of a tough situation. Thanks to the "Carnival Kool-Aid", I am sure that the good folks onboard are making the best possible situation for all of them. I am booked on a Carnival cruise with my friend who is on the Triumph now next month. I am sure that even after this he will be on the ship in March. If anyone has any information or pictures, updates would be great.

Coast Guard is generally responsible for ship safety inspections. NTSB investigates marine accidents. Don't know if this incident would qualify for an NTSB investigation, but it might. Also, since the ship is registered in the Bahamas there may be a Bahamian agency that will want in on any investigation.

I was responding to the poster who seemed to think that the TSA would be responsible for the mechanical safety of a cruise ship.

Unless there is a reason to believe either an ongoing safety issue or foul play, I doubt the NTSB would want more than an executive summary from the USCG. That said, as has been mentioned in this thread, Carnival Corp seems to be having more than their share of incidents lately, so the NTSB could decide they want to conduct an investigation. Time will tell.

There are very few people still without power at this point. Even in hard hit CT, the latest numbers are less than 1000 customers still without power. My sister is one of them, it happens regularly in her neck of the woods--that's why they have a wood stove and flash lights. They're quite comfortable for a couple of days without electricity.

Those on a cruise ship still won't have to shovel snow. :p

Doubt a “dry dock” but you can almost guarantee an extended docking. Before they can cruise again, they first have to access what happened, fix that, repair all the damaged items, and recharge the fire suppression system. Replacing/recharging the fire suppression tanks is not like changing a propane tank. We're talking weeks.

Many people misuse the word "dry dock." Since dry dock means putting it into a dry dock and lifting it out of the water, they'll only dry dock if they need to fix anything under the waterline. Since it was an engine room fire and not a damaged prop, damaged pod, hull puncture, etc. they won't have to lift it out of the water. This is coming from years of experience as an engineer in the shipping industry.

I have a coworker, also and engineer in designing ships for 10+ years, that's on the Elation. It's his first cruise on Carnival and since they said the Elation docked next to the Triumph to give supplies, I can't wait to hear his stories.

Thank you for this very interesting post, :) and i can't wait to hear them either! If he doesn't come to post, you must come recount!

I hope everyone will use the serving tongs and spoons in the buffet!

The serving spoons, chafing dishes, forks, knives, plates, bowls, etc, that cannot be properly washed and sterilized without hot water... umm, pass me a paper plate and a plastic fork and i'm good, thankyouvermuch!:p

It's doubtful anything will come from Triumph while she's on emergency power. Elation bandwidth may be tied up with ship traffic. I'm sure once she docks pictures will start appearing.

I was on the cruise for the 16th and got my email at about 7:30 that ours was cancelled. I am crushed!!! But looking with my travel agent to transfer to a cruise out of another port... Can't believe my luck!! :(

Check out Navigator of the Seas out of NOLA on the 23rd. There are still some balconies left and it's a 7 day cruise. I heard there are some sales.

I can recommend Navigator. Sailed on her in January. Nice ship, good food, surprisingly enjoyable itinerary.

You don't need a passport on a closed loop cruise but if you must leave the ship to fly home from certain countries you must have a passport. This comes into play in this case.

Not really in this case. There are ways that this situation can be easily handled and the people who did not show passports upon boarding are probably already identified and the paper work being processed. Gives the consular/embassy staff something to do. The lack of passports is not going to be a problem unless someone without one wants to make their own arrangements to return to the U.S.

I am amazed by all of the engineering experts out here but I will ask you all some questions:

How do you guys all know that the fire was related to the propulsion issue?

How do we know that these two fires were caused by poor maintenance and not freak occurrences? Or possibly a design flaw by Fincantieri?

Considering the ship hasn't made it back to port yet, probably a bit early to dust out our engineering degrees and decide what happened and why CCL was 100% at fault (I'm not saying they are at fault or are not at fault, just have not enough information on it to conclude something.)

Unknown.

But it's certainly relevant to consider Triumph's recent record of propulsion problems reported on multiple recent sailings.

And also poses the question: just how long will an engineering problem be allowed to persist before the ship is taken out of service to address it?

Could you imagine the size and weight of a cable large enough to handle an electrical load needed to make a difference on the Triumph, multiplied by the length needed to span the distance between the ships.

Even if there were such a cable and it could be of use, it doesn't seem like 1 ships power generating capabilty would be so oversized as to be able to handle the requirments of 2 ships.

Specially with the Triumph being bigger than the Elation.

Besides, cruise ships are not equipped for shoreside power anyway, even less doing it at sea. You would need the ships to be sailing at a very short distance to each other and have specially built cranes and on each ship to carry the cables above the water. Just look in Google how the military refuel ships at sea to get an idea of what is required. It just can't happen with cruise ships because they are not designed with this in mind.

I was on the Behind the Fun tour on Carnival Magic (a ship more similar to Triumph than Elation is) and they have six main generators (three aft and three midship) of which four are needed for propulsion if I am not mistaken. These ships are diesel-electric, which means that the generators are diesel powered and drive the electric motors used for propulsion. These are not azipod-equipped ships (though Elation probably is). They have regular propellers and rudder but still they are all electric in the propulsion system (main propellers and thrusters). It is HIGHLY unlikely that one ship can power propulsion systems of a second ship.

And I see the people on this cruise are getting a full refund, plus a refund of travel expenses, a refund of all onboard purchases except gift shop and casino expenses, and a free future cruise. Not bad, not bad. Thank you Carnival for stepping up to the plate.

That's the least Carnival can do. These poor passengers will be aboard ship with no power for 4 days (Sunday thru Wednesday). That means no showers, no working bathrooms, cold food, no a/c, etc

Absurd would be someone suggesting lack of a steel drum band was the root cause of the fire. I don't think anyone has suggested that (yet), but it wouldn't surprise me.

There is nothing rah rah about getting two free cruises. It's quite appealing.

I disagree with two free cruises. This one is a total bust, no matter how much fun they had before the fire, the 4 days until off the ship are really not a "cruise". So the one they offer to take the sting out this one is really just a wash, something to neutralize the anger over having their expensive ship be towed around the Gulf because of possibly something preventable..........but I retract that as we will not be told the truth. I wonder where they get all the water that over 4000 people need each day? Reality is people will question safety (serious fires on two ships in last few years) and want to know the reason why. If not told, it's reasonable to think it could happen again.............and it did.

What's with this waiver that you mention and post 364 discusses? Am i close in my "guess" below? do you guys know this or are you guys guessing.

This, I am very well aware of. But i thought he said CCL was gonna get a waiver for the pax so that they wouldn't need passports. The post stuck out at me. I didn't know such a thing wld be possible. So now I'm thinking, CCL has pax manifest which verified everyone's US citizenship (bc non-US need a pp to board, so that's irrelevant), and CCL can somehow get a special exception and waiver based on an "emergent" situation. If anything like this is possible, and I thought that's what he said though the post is buried now, I'd definitely be interested in learning about it....

Sounds to me as though Carnival is going above and beyond on this one. Let me count the ways.

1. They got to "enjoy" almost 3 days of a good cruise.

2. Getting a full refund of this cruise.

3. Getting a free, or deeply discounted, next cruise.

4. Getting reimbursed for all non-refundable expenses.

Now true, the last 3 or so days of this cruise, will not be fun. But the compensation is great. Also glad no one was hurt.

I am all for making the best out of a bad situation however your comments are just ridiculous. Yes no one is injured and yes they are getting their money back plus some. But this is in no way an ideal situation or wonderful vacation. You know people would take your posts more serious if you weren't always so rah rah rah all the time.

Could not have said it better
