wwcruisers Posted May 30, 2013 #2 Share Posted May 30, 2013 Life jackets, or will you worry bout germs on them................. most sure it was asked...............:D Oh yes! That's why you should always put that whistle in your mouth, when you try your life jacket on! ;)
Rare Scrapnana Posted May 31, 2013 #3 Share Posted May 31, 2013 On most cruise ships you never put them on. In the case of an emergency I would not be worrying about germs.

Krazy Kruizers Posted May 31, 2013 #5 Share Posted May 31, 2013 When we did have to wear them to the lifeboat drill, we had a few that were pretty dirty.

Krazy Kruizers Posted May 31, 2013 #7 Share Posted May 31, 2013 I used to watch people try out their whistles -- ugh!! The only time I would use the whistle is if I were in the water and needed help.
OCruisers Posted May 31, 2013 #8 Share Posted May 31, 2013 On Princess, jackets are put on at muster drill Yes they are .. but the life jackets never seem very clean. LuLu ~~~~
sail7seas Posted May 31, 2013 #9 Share Posted May 31, 2013 Wash your hands after touching the life jackets. Wash your hands often....... period. :)
cb at sea Posted May 31, 2013 #10 Share Posted May 31, 2013 No, they don't routinely clean them. If you have a choice of drowning or catching a potential 'germ'...which will you pick?
Nebr.cruiser Posted May 31, 2013 #11 Share Posted May 31, 2013 I doubt if they clean them, but this is very low on the list of things I would ever worry about. Ok, I'd never worry about it. If I ever actually need the life jacket, I sure won't worry about its cleanliness.
Ashland Posted May 31, 2013 #12 Share Posted May 31, 2013 On Princess, jackets are put on at muster drill Hmmm...we didn't have to put them on at muster PCL Sapphire to the Mexican Riviera Feb 2012
Rare Keith1010 Posted May 31, 2013 #13 Share Posted May 31, 2013 As usual all of this varies by cruise line. Keith

okgirl Posted May 31, 2013 #15 Share Posted May 31, 2013 Germs don't live for long on a hard dry surface, so in general I don't worry about them having germs on them.....back in the day when we had to put them on for every drill, I wiped them down with a clorox wet wipe as soon as I got to my cabin....but now that they are hardly ever removed from the closet I don't bother. sail7seas Posted May 31, 2013 #16 Share Posted May 31, 2013 Don't put the whistle in your mouth. That would seem to be obvious yet in the days when HAL required we wear them at life boat drill, there were always people who could not resist the impulse to play with the whistle. Used to amaze me. :D
LandlockedCruiser01 Posted May 31, 2013 #17 Share Posted May 31, 2013 We all know what situations lifejackets are used in, and people worry about germs? When you have to wear a lifejacket to save your life, germs should be the least of your worries. Besides, the ocean water will wash off those germs, anyway :). Apologies for the dark humor, but there are situations where germophobia doesn't belong.
blackpool belle Posted May 31, 2013 #18 Share Posted May 31, 2013 Wouldn't worry about germs in an emergency but I would be gutted if I picked up some germ during muster and was laid low for a couple of days.
delily Posted May 31, 2013 #19 Share Posted May 31, 2013 We didn't have to take our life jackets to our Norwegian muster so we never touched them. If you need to put on a life jacket though, I doubt that you'll care how dirty they are. :-)

mikewrit Posted June 1, 2013 #21 Share Posted June 1, 2013 Since we no longer have to wear the jackets to muster, we try them on in the cabin to make sure everything is in place and attached.
fishycomics Posted June 1, 2013 Author #22 Share Posted June 1, 2013 The life vests do get a going over by the staff, and they do get replaced.
OCruisers Posted June 1, 2013 #23 Share Posted June 1, 2013 One of the life jackets in our cabin looked like it was brand new so it seems they do get replaced from time to time. This was on Emerald Princess (2013) ... and, yes, we did have to take them to the muster drill and put them there. LuLu ~~~~
