Worst table companion you have had

Recommended Posts

I'm curious as to all these past cruises listings; for whose benefit are they, the posters or the complete strangers who read the posts? Suspect the strangers find they clutter up the board

To the extent a post provides advice or states an opinion, a listing of the poster's experience with a particular line, or with cruising in general, is some indication that the poster might know what he is talking about.

Where is the box to uncheck?:)

Whether you quote, multi-quote or quick reply to a post, there's a checkbox beneath the text box where you type your message that allows you to 'show your signature' (if checked). Unchecked = no signature.

I've left mine checked here, just for fun

I have it checked so I do not see them but I often click on a person's profile so I CAN see them. It helps me to know if they know what they are talking about to some extent.

Of course that is faulty too. I know I once repiled to someone asking something about Europe, actually about Paris, where they were spending a few days pre cruise or post cruise. I had recently returned from a week in France, 3 days of which was spent in Paris. I had someone posty how could I know since I mostly cruised the Caribbean. I found that uncalled for and a little ridiculous on their part. Of course I have been to the Caribbean more than Europe, or anywhere else for that matter.(out side of long weekend trips within a 5 hour drive of our home) I live in Georgia and Carribean cruising is more affordable. I have never claimed to be wealthy and often say we are middle income level. That does not mean that I like most other middle income people, do not save my money and every 4 or 5 years take a nicer vacation.

You are right, ... as long as the 'experience' is truthful.

Really glad I started this thread but have just realised it is in the New cruisers section and I had thought it was in the RCCL section!! Still it has been lovely and hope I haven't put any new cruisers off with all the tales of not so good dining mates. Normally dining mates are really great and we have met so many fantastic people.

Teddy Smith - lovely to see you and I recognised your name immediately :) Hope you are both well.

Husky61, you can also click on "User CP" in the upper left of the toolbar. Then click on "Edit Options" under "Settings and Options". Then, under "Thread Display Options", you can uncheck the "signature", "avatar", and/or "images" boxes, depending on what you do and don't want to see in other people's posts.

We have been fortunate to have had many wonderful tablemates and any number with whom we have continued contact. There is only one who was an obnoxious know it all on everything, i.e. went to take a picture with my digital camera and he said, "use the viewfinder, it works better". His wife was always several sheets to the wind which was probably her way of dealing with him.

If it was a dSLR and not a P&S, he was completely correct. He may have been an obnoxious know-it-all but in this case he was right.

Worst table companion we've had?

* The ones who are badly-introverted/'Damaged Goods'

and who keep to themselves, despite everyone else at table getting along well..

even though we've all met ea. other for the first time! :)

* The ones who can't handle a knife and fork in a civilized manner

and who should clearly do their hacking at the meat, up on Lido somewhere!

Other than those very few who stand out as mentioned

most table companions on the seven Carnival cruises we've done

are great folks and easy to get along with!

We've met very nice people, from all over this planet

and strike up a conversation with just about any-and every-one!

No problems there!

Don, I have a brother like that. He IS usally right too 99 times out of 100. The problem is he is so busy putting down how stupid I am that I would prefer to do without his "help" and make mistakes.

My first cruise. An attractive young woman at my table was always the center of attention, a bit sloppy at times (spilling food on herself,) definitely not the sharpest knife in the drawer, a bit loud, obnoxious, etc.... And this was each and every night.

Sadly she was also sharing my cabin with me...... :)

Hope you didn't end up marrying her. :D

Chicagobound -

We have a code word which we both said about 10 mins after sitting down and it was "Pita" which of course stands for "Pain in the ***" :)

How do you work "pita" in the conversation? Do you reach for the bread basket and say, "Darn, no pita bread!" :D

On that first night we will mention to any table mates that we often skip the MDR and if they don't see us again to not think it was anything to do with them.

I know many (probably most) feel the dining is a huge part of the cruise experience but it just isn't for us.

For the times we have eaten in the MDR we have always been lucky to have great table mates.

That's really an excellent idea, to let your table mates know it's not personal, should you choose to not return! I will tell people that I'm quite punctual, so if I don't show by 5 after, don't hold up the table waiting on me. But I never thought about letting them know if I don't show up, it's not because of them. Very considerate.

Plus sometimes I'm not in the mood for people. It's not anyone else, it's me. So I like to eat from the buffet and get to the casino, for example, than to spend 2 hrs at a table that doesn't pay me! :D

If you get a table that isn't a good group, change it!

I'm curious ~ when anyone has changed tables after the 1st night, have you run into the original table mates later? Seems like that would be awkward.

Oh, I'd risk the awkwardness if I had encountered the things I'd read on here!

The one time I changed tables, I did not see my table mates again, but I did wonder if I would.

Please note that I recommended threatening to kick the child, not actually kicking.

It is no more acceptable for a child to continue kicking an adult painfully than it is for an adult to kick a child.

My point was that I would take action and make a huge fuss if anyone continually kicked me. I would not sit and "suck it up".

Or maybe instead of kicking the kid, you could have reached around behind him and flicked the grandmother's ear every time he kicked!

Hmm, sounds like we have our next "obnoxious table mate story" just waiting to happen. You cruising anytime soon, Redman? :D

We were at a booth for six. Two of the people were a Russian couple who demanded Russian dressing at every dinner and put it on everything that wasn't sweet. They were loud and obnoxious. The other two were a grandmother and her grandson. She kept hitting on me even though I was on board with my wife. Sometimes she'd get there early and arrange it so I'd have to sit by her and my wife would be on the other side of the table and then she kept moving closer and closer and I kept moving farther and farther. I very nearly fell off the seat and on to the floor.

And it was a 12 day cruise in the days before anytime dining and specialty restaurants.

Ihtink I owudl have embarassed her by telling her I did not care for "older women."-lol! No seruiously, that would be a good reason to change tables or go for my time dining.

I had to read through all of these to make sure we weren't any of the couples someone was reporting about.

Lol! Me too!

I have to say, it could be a bit of a tall order to walk that fine line between what might be considered talking too much and what others on this thread have called boring or even "introverted/damaged goods." Yikes.

Her grandson had a perpetual "Who is this woman, someone please get me out of here" look of panic on his face.
