luvcruisn' Posted September 5, 2013 #1 Share Posted September 5, 2013 Starting Jan. 1/14, Royal Caribbean is prohibiting smoking on balconies. Will HAL follow along eventually?

Palm Bay Cruise Couple Posted September 5, 2013 #3 Share Posted September 5, 2013 I certainly hope that Holland America bans balcony smoking too.

innlady1 Posted September 5, 2013 #5 Share Posted September 5, 2013 I hope so, as well, but I'm not holding my breath. Would rather they instituted that policy than the new wine policy!
texasdillo Posted September 5, 2013 #6 Share Posted September 5, 2013 I hope so too! That is one change that I would really like to happen.
Irish Eyes Are Sailing Posted September 5, 2013 #7 Share Posted September 5, 2013 Eventually, everybody will have the same rules. It is inevitable. Just like the wine policy, HAL will try to be in line with everyone else. Not all, but most, of the mainstream lines. Hope they do stop smoking on balconies. I think it is a fire hazard and plus it is unpleasant for non-smokers on either side of the smoker. Give them a safe, pleasant, and convenient place to smoke besides the balconies. JMO. Rare Hlitner Posted September 5, 2013 #9 Share Posted September 5, 2013 I hope so, as well, but I'm not holding my breath. Would rather they instituted that policy than the new wine policy! Hmmmm. Holding your breath is often what you must do on HA cruises if you want to avoid smoke :) Hank
taxmantoo Posted September 5, 2013 #10 Share Posted September 5, 2013 Another step in the right direction. Hopefully HAL will follow suit.
taxmantoo Posted September 5, 2013 #11 Share Posted September 5, 2013 Much better for you than smoking ... and doesn't inconvenience your neighbour ;)
Rare Hlitner Posted September 5, 2013 #12 Share Posted September 5, 2013 We should add that RCI not only will prohibit smoking on balconies, but also in all passenger cabins ($250 cleaning fee if violated) and nearly all indoor areas with the exception of the casino and one indoor smoking room (on most ships). But the indoor smoking venue might also be an area for cigars and we know that many cigarette smokers hate cigar smoke. RCI is also limiting Electronic Cigarettes to only those designated smoking areas. Hank

FunForUs Posted September 5, 2013 #14 Share Posted September 5, 2013 I'm concerned that if HAL doesn't change their policy that more smokers will sail on HAL balconies so I am going to look seriously at RCCL itineraries.
nedward Posted September 5, 2013 #15 Share Posted September 5, 2013 Starting Jan. 1/14' date=' Royal Caribbean is prohibiting smoking on balconies. Will HAL follow along eventually?[/quote'] We cancelled our 2/2014 cruise because HAL allowed smoking on the verandas and didn't want to take the chance of not being able to use it. Oddly, HAL thought the reason we cancelled was because of the new wine policy which I didn't like but was not the deal breaker. I like HAL and now will sail with them again. However, they have to find a comfortable place for the smokers and not some corner of the ship. Jane
solocanadian Posted September 5, 2013 #16 Share Posted September 5, 2013 I'd like an ice cold glass of Proseco with that!:D
Ship's Wake Posted September 5, 2013 #17 Share Posted September 5, 2013 I'm concerned that if HAL doesn't change their policy that more smokers will sail on HAL balconies so I am going to look seriously at RCCL itineraries. Boytjie Posted September 5, 2013 #18 Share Posted September 5, 2013 Much better for you than smoking ... and doesn't inconvenience your neighbour ;) Not if it is bought at a movie theater and smothered in "butter". Also not fun for the neighbors if you have a movie theater size popper going on the balcony. :D

sppunk Posted September 5, 2013 #20 Share Posted September 5, 2013 I love the Radiance Class - might have to jump back after 10 years in 2014.
Cruising-along Posted September 5, 2013 #21 Share Posted September 5, 2013 Saw a few comments on the Royal boards mentioning HAL as their new alternative. Oh great  I worry too that all the smokers will come to HAL. We're planning to book even more cruises with Celebrity. Not ruling HAL out, but most likely won't be booking balconies with HAL again. :(
Ralph Landis Posted September 5, 2013 #22 Share Posted September 5, 2013 Ah---Another smoking rant. I like smoking. I do not smoke in the house I only smoke out side so let me live and smoke on my verandah. Can we all get A long? Thank You
kakalina Posted September 5, 2013 #23 Share Posted September 5, 2013 We only smoke outside also. We have upgraded from booking OV to balcony cabins so that we can enjoy our cruise also.
summersigh Posted September 5, 2013 #24 Share Posted September 5, 2013 RCI is also limiting Electronic Cigarettes to only those designated smoking areas. RCI (or any line for that matter) will have problems banning Electronic Cigs from passenger cabins or verandas because they have no fire nor any odor to the water vapor they emit. RollieUK Posted September 5, 2013 #25 Share Posted September 5, 2013 With all the other lines limiting smoking is HAL seeing a potential here to gain all the smokers bookings?
