Viator vs RomeinLimo

there are several well reviewed Italian tour companies on the ports of call forum

Romeinlimo is one of the biggest but there are many others-personally we can recommend Rudys at rome-car-tours

Viator is a 3rd party booking agent, sometimes can be worth going through if have special offers otherwise try to contact local tours yourself

contact several companies and tell them your requirements, you'll soon get a feeling for the best fit for you

The key here as noted is that Viator does not provide their own services, thus if you have an issue it can be problematic.

I'll vote for RIL, based on experience and some of the features they offer (the tour-sharing site alone is a no-brainer for me since I am usually the organizer).

But there are certainly other well regarded options.

On our 21 day trip to the Med (12 day cruise), we used a combination of ship excursions (Livorno, Santorini & Kusadasi), Viator (transfer from FCO to Rome, Ho Ho Bus in Rome, Venice walking tours, Paris dinner at Hard Rock Cafe) and private Rome Cabs (transfer from Rome hotel to ship, Athens shared with others on our Roll Call) and totally private taxi (Naples).

By sharing with others on your Roll Call the price drops drastically. The transfer from Rome hotel to ship was 180 EUR for a van that fit 6 (30 EUR pp). The tour in Athens was 200 EUR (50 EUR pp). Compared to $119 pp for ship excursions. And two of us in Naples were 100 EUR pp to go to Pompeii and Sorrento.

I liked Viator because everything was paid for in US $ before we ever left home. After booking the hotel in Rome, I did the transfer and thought my hotel was listed on Viator. Upon second look the name was close, but not my hotel. I called Viator and they handled the problem immediately checking with the local vendor and came back and told me they could include my hotel. The Ho Ho bus in Rome accepted my voucher with no questions asked. The three tours in Venice, there were no problems at all. The Vendor showed up on time and accepted my vouchers.

We enjoyed the ships tours, lots of comraderie on those big buses. We went to San Gimignano (walled city) and Castello di Oliveto Winery from Livorno and it was a hoot watching the bus driver get us up a very narrow twisting road to the castle. We all hooted and cheered as he made it in that big coach. Then in Santorini we didn't want to ride the cable cars up the side of the Caldera, so we did an excursion to a Winery and around the Island, and Kusadasi we were afraid two women alone in Turkey wasn't good, so we booked the tour to a mountain village and on the way back stopped at rug factory (of course).

IF you want a totally private excursion that is going to cost $$$. Our day in Naples was our best day of the 21 day trip. It was like watching the tv show "Lives of the Rich & Famous" only we were living it. He was our private driver, escorting us across busy streets, carrying our packages, stopping when and where we wanted to stop. He was just a taxi driver though, not a guide. He dropped us off at Pompeii, picking us up after 2 hours there and continued on to Sorrento. He took us to a restaurant and talked to the waiter (in Italian) for lunch, then disappeared. He came back in about 2 hours. Then escorted us to local shops and an alleyway that was like a flea market. On the way back to the ship, he included a short tour of Naples, pointing out the important sites there. We paid 100 EUR pp for the 8 1/2 hour tour and were so pleased we each tipped him 10 EUR. At the time we were there it was $1.68 to 1 EUR, so the day cost us more than any other tour or day, but it was AWESOME! He was sooooo concerned that two older ladies were travelling in Italy without a male escort, so he became our escort and he wasn't hard on the eyes either!:p

Have a great trip, whatever you decide to do. No one way is better than the other, just different. Only you know what suits you best.

I can only recommend the one I used and they were awesome in all three ports I used them. 6 driveers/van for us, would use them again in a heartbeat. of the 6 drivers I would say 3 were awesome, 2 good and one 'average'

You can find my thoughts in that other thread with many many many responses :)

Agreed! We used the same company in three different ports! Amazing to say the least! Singing drivers to olive oil tastings! And these people are from the areas of the tours. It is obvious they love their country! A wonderful service is provided here!

A little hard to decipher this question. As I understand your question, you have two ways to pursue others for your tour, your roll call, and R-i-L's tour share program. Are you pursuing both?

Not sure on your "cost effective" question. Sounds pretty vague to me.

Rome in Limo has been very popular with users on this forum. They obviously do a great job. However there are other companies. a group of us had several tranfers and tours with Driver in Rome. They were excellent. For our tour of Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este, Roberto took us to a couple other interesting places. He also took us to a grocery store and helped us choose wine to take on the ship.

Remo conducted our tour of Rome at Night, including singing and playing the accordian. He is a hoot.

I would highly recommend RIL (rome-in-limo) we used them 3 times in Italy. Everything is pretty much taken care of & any questions you have Jany is the one to ask--I think that girl lives on the computer--she is always there to answer any questions. Their drivers know almost everything--from Naples our driver sang to us on the way back. We used them for Rome-Naples & Florence, I would not hesitate to use them any time you are in Italy. You can go online & fill up your group to save money...I don't know if you said you were on a cruise or not...but when I did it--we met on board & left the ship together & it saved hunting people down off the ship--& we got right off & our driver was right there--we left & no others were even close to leaving yet. Just have a great time. Their drivers & guides are the BEST!!@!

If take a few minutes to peruse this extensive thread, http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=986987, you will see what other CruiseCritic participants have experienced--that Romeinlimo has been providing exceptional, quality touring and transfer services for MANY YEARS. We've used them multiple times on multiple trips and every tour has been superb. There is absolutely no comparison: go with Romeinlimo! :)

we only have 2 people and which tour is more cost effective if I cannot find anyone in roll call to share the cost. We are in budget and do not want to do private tour.
Romeinlimo makes it easy to share tours. You can either use their tour share feature or do it yourself in your roll call. I have sailed Europe multiple times and have NEVER had a problem finding people to share a tour. I book an 8-person van, for example, and typically have to waitlist people trying to join my tours! Hi

I have read thru the boards and rome in limo it is. At first when I looked at this I was surprised at how much more rome in limo is than the tour offered thru the ship and we went back and forth. We finally decided travelling with a big busload of people is not the way we want to go.

I was telling my son the prices as I thought they were high but he said divide that by 9 hours which makes sense. Plus I know gas is more expensive than here.

We are going to put this on the tour sharing so if anyone is on Costa and wants to join us Apr 3... :)

We are thinking of using rome in limo for Florence any idea of the discount you can get for booking two tours. I have an email into them but thought I would ask here.

Thanks for all the input. This can be overwhelming and a little insight helps.

We toured Rome with Rome-cabs. They were great. Search them on Romecabs.com. One of the great thing about this company is that you can reserve a tour without pre-paying anything. Only on trust basis.

They pick up from port, airport or hotels.

Make sure you join your roll call on Cruise Critic if there is one....you might find people to share your tour there... Am certain you won't be disappointed by going with RIL, they are a great company to work with and made our trips to Italy so much better!!
