I'm curious why you book that far out.  Do certain routes need that to get what you want?  We have something planned for next April and that's probably farther out than we've ever booked anything.

Some itineraries are very rare but also very popular and book out quickly so by getting in when they are first announced, not only do you get on board, but you are likely to get it at the best price.

Some examples,

Circle Indian Ocean cruises, Australian Circumnavigations, African Circumnavigations, (rare and popular),

Antarctic cruises (rarer about 5-10 few years ago) but still popular,

Galapagos Islands (not rare) but very popular, 

Black Sea cruises.

A lot of cruise lines offer the bast prices when the cruise is first released! 

Plus, especially if you do B2B (back to back), you have more choices to book the same cabin on consecutive cruises.

Last summer, with all completely different itineraries, we did 5 B2B all in the same cabin for 42 nights..
