I wasn't going to post on here but well..here goes lol

I hold a degree in Finance, also was a practicing CPA, (no longer) today we are self employed with a staff of five.

I have seen the snobby

I have seen the rude

I have hobnobbed with some pretty well off individuals.

I have controlled million dollar accounts

Today I live on 9 acres, am a wild life rehabber, worry more about the animals, then the neighbors, open my door every morning and yell CLYDE, SPARK PLUG and two squirrels come running to the door for their morning peanuts..(along with 17 chickens a couple of dogs a few cats, the rabbits well you get the idea)

and I cruise mainly Carnival (DO have a Disney cruise coming up) and I cruise Carnival BECAUSE, IMO they are real people, with all their faults, and all their problems, and all their laughter and fun. These people are not out to impress anyone with their ideas of grandeur.

Yup my kind of people!!!

We took the Carnival Fantasy from Charleston, SC recently and I told my wife Carnival is the WalMart of cruising. Oddly, enough, had a good time.

Agree with you on Carnival Fantasy out of Charleston -- "It's not good... no, it's not good ... but it's not bad".

It's funny. I have trouble figuring out how some people get the thoughts that they get when they read a post. I don't get the same feelings or bad thoughts that some on here seem to get from posts. I tried very hard to be saying my preference but still saying that it is mine and I understand that others have different experiences and thoughts. And that was fine because if everyone was the same it would not be a wonderful life. It still upset some. Oh well I guess some have their pants on too tight.

I just find this thread funny. I want to hang out with the partiers, or the so called rednecks. I am shy, but i like down to earth people. I am going to get hammered. So what? If i have snobby people around me, even though I am shy I will say something.

s

Because some people don't prefer to be on a cruise ship around "hammered" partiers. If "hammered" people are what we consider "down to earth" or "real people" as someone else called them, then I guess I'm a fake space cadet. So be it.

Carnival is not for me. If that brings out the insecurity in others, that's their problem, not mine.

The more posts I read from the people defending Carnival, the more I want to avoid the budget lines. With comments such as "HAL was brutal because of how old everyone was", accusations of snobbery on other lines, judging people who cruise on other lines as trying to "impress anyone with their ideas of grandeur", bragging that "I am going to get hammered", proudly stating "Give me walmart over macys anyday" (sp), announcing "I want to hang out with the partiers, or the so called rednecks", the more I am convinced that my husband and I have made the absolutely correct decision to not ever consider Carnival as a viable option. No way do I want to spend time on a budget cruise line with such people. I will spend my money on the cruise lines the adults sail on.

Ok just to clairify. Things may not of come out correctly. I just like to be around good down to earth people. I feel more at ease. I am not a huge drinker, rarely actually, but plan to have a good time on my first cruise with my husband. Sorry if I offened anyone. I sure was offened. I dont appreciate being internet bashed. Also I paid a lot of money for my upcoming cruise on Carnival. My husband and I work very hard, and have not had a vacation since 2005. Im glad you feel it is "budget" good for you. Happy cruising everyone.

And that, right there, is the problem. You were not being bashed. Carnival was. You can't take comments about a business personally. When general comments are made about passenger behavior, it refers to what is more common on that carrier than others, not about every single individual on board.

I know exactly what you mean. I outgrew that frat house, party till you drop mentality when I became an adult many years ago. ;)

I'm afraid that some ships which sail in the height of summer do have the reputation for chavs and drunkenness; however on three cruises with Ventura, including one of around three weeks, in the Med, we have never seen any sign of this. Perhaps this is because we travel slightly out of season?

No problems with Thomson, either, but their ships are ancient and beset with minor problems; the itineraries are what make their line popular, as well as the no tipping policy.

We enjoy trying different lines- RCI next- and have yet to experience a poor cruise.

I have noted how good the Thomson itineraries look (especially the Black Sea ones) but I get to worried about the ships being smaller and older than I am used to with either chaaves or people that are too quiet. I have been tempted on more than one though.

On the Carnival issue I think some Carnival bashers should give them a go when the Vista debuts in Europe because I experienced nothing like what everyone says its clientele are like. Our excellent Baltic experience made us book another unusual sailing through Panama Canal with them this year.

Hubby and I are educated, young professionals from the UK and we loved Carnival. We will try other cruise lines for sure but loved the atmosphere and the mood on the ship. We were at will to party on deck if we wanted (which we did) and then we could float off to a wine tasting/photo seminar...which were by no means the most amazing ones we had been to but were lovely nonetheless. Everyone on elegant night was dressed up and then the next night were in jeans playing Trivia and sipping a beer. One day we will probably jump on the Breeze to experience the Carnival experience a different way and will probably enjoy it.

I have enough pomp and circumstance in my life so I'm not going to spend my holiday doing it.

BTW one is never too old to party. ;)

We are in our early 60s, and sailed mostly Carnival, some Princess, and Celebrity. We learned a long time ago, that if you want an excellent vacation, stay away from cruises 4 days and less. We've heard horror stories of these short cruise, called "booze cruises", wild partying all night. We typically like the longer cruises 10 to 16 days. I think we are fairly easy to please, and have always had a great time.

Only problems I ever had was on 16 day Panama cruise on Princess. The itinerary was fantastic, but I like to stay in touch with some of my clients and called in advance to find out if I could bring and use a Satelite phone. It was approved by Princess, but then they blocked every transmission I made with it. Not only did it cost about $500 to rent the phone, but then I was forced to make the expensive calls on board. No matter where I was onboard the ship, my calls would go through, then end 20 seconds later.

Also we found that we were some of the youngest onboard, which was alright, but all of the night clubs had only 7 or 8 people in them by 10:30 pm. I would try Princess again, and met some friends that we've been in touch with ever since.

16 day cruises on Carnival from Hawaii have also been our favorites. We just don't participate in the activities we don't like, but don't have any complaints about people who do, and we also enjoy 1 or 2 nights of formal dining.

Celebrity was nice also, but we paid a lot more for that cruise and didn't see a lot of difference between it and Carnival. I like the young generation that does seem to frequent Carnival, as it makes me feel younger also. We typically upgrade to a nicer cabin, which at night time, there is nothing better than alone time, a glass of wine on your private balcony

Not sure to whom you're referring when you say "ideas of grandeur." I'm a 34 yo professional (not wealthy by any means). I cruise RCL when my priority is having fun, particularly with groups of friends, and I cruise Celebrity when I want a more refined, relaxing vacation. I enjoy the variety. Never seen anyone on either line appearing to have "ideas of grandeur." I've never been on true "luxury" lines so I can't speak to their clientele, but I suspect the criticism that certain lines carry pax with hangups about money and class is, in actuality, more about the critic's own sense of fitting in with people with tastes different than theirs.

We would never do Disney again. We had a better experience on Carnival for half the price!

That's Interesting. We just got off of the Carnival Sunshine, and our prior experience had been Disney.

My wife and I had an ongoing joke all week long about anything inconvenient, broken, dirty, etc. One of us would turn to the other and say "Well, that wouldn't happen on Disney."

Not saying I would never go on Carnival again, but I can definitely see that for our family, Disney was a far superior experience. I know why they charge more.

Regarding delusions of grandeur, I did have an experience my last RCL cruise through Panama Canal, and though it seems funny now, I never sailed on them again. Maybe it was because it was a holiday cruise (one of the more expensive times to travel) but the fellow at our table was so obnoxious and boastful, I wanted to gag. I guess that's why I like NCL. Very warm and down to earth people. I found HAL that way as well. I have to admit, I now prefer land vacations because of all the ostentatiousness you encounter cruising...Not to say I haven't met some very nice people...

News alert - you will find obnoxious and boastful people on any cruise line. It isn't just lines like RCI. These people also frequent NCL and Carnival as well, as is evidenced by some of the comments from NCL and Carnival cheerleaders on this very thread (see post #153 for an example).

I can't imagine letting a bad encounter at a restaurant (or in the MDR) encourage me to avoid that restaurant, let alone a whole cruise line, again. I've read similar stories to yours before, and I'm always amazed by them.

Our never cruise list is

Carnival -- once was enough.

HAL -- we are **** Mariners but the last two cruises were dogs -- so they are now added to our Never cruise again.

Our favorites --

Oceania (small R ships only)

Silversea

Celebrity even RCCL are OK depending on the itinerary.

Not defensive and definately not trying to invalidate fortinwebs experience or trying to convince fortinweb to try CCL again. But fortinwebs posts do portray CCL as a party boat boozefest and for someone who is seeking information on what cruise to choose I feel it is only fair to post my different point of view based on my experiences as well. Yes there are some CCL cruises that will resemble the booze cruise atmosphere that forinweb is portraying. I'm not denying that at all. They are the type of cruises that fortinweb chose to take...a short cheap CCL cruise. But there are many CCL cruises that are not party boat boozefests and that is what I am trying to point out by relaying my and my co-workers experiences.

I think what this person is trying to say is that it's only fair to represent both sides of the argument. That's all he or she was trying to do.

Agree. The one mass market cruise line busman did not mention is Celebrity. On Celebrity during the day you will see shorts, T's, swim suits, jogging attire, etc. All very casual and appropriate for outside areas, just like any other mass market cruise line. Lounge, casino and theater attire is smart casual, however

Celebrity still has formal nights in the MDR, a tradition that many Celebrity fans enjoy. The dress code is jacket, tie and slacks at a minimum for men, nice evening wear for ladies. Many claim they ignore the dress code and get away with it, some even bragging that they wore jeans and T-shirt. It's a shame that these people are so self centered that they brag about being disrespectful of the cruise line's dress code policies and to those people who adhere to it. :(

On non-formal nights diners are asked to wear "smart casual", which most take to mean pressed slacks and a polo type shirt or better. Slacks and dresses for ladies.

On formal nights, the buffet is still open and shorts and T's are fine there. Specialty restaurants never require formal wear, so they are also an option for dining on formal nights. Or, order room service for free, which in the evening is identical to the MDR menu. You can even dine in your underwear - or less - with room service. ;)

You do realize other cruise lines have this too, including Carnival!

I'm not an adult so maybe I'll be able to bring a different point of view to this thread. Okay so the reason me and my family go on Carnival is because it was the only good priced cruise line that sailed from Southern California. (I think Disney sails from here but they are expensive). Before considering this I really wanted to go on an RCL cruise. That's what I had seen on all the commercials. But obviously that wasn't able to work out. So we went on Carnival and it turned out well.

I didn't find the people to be rude or partying all the time but as I said before I'm only 14 so maybe that's why. I can understand why older people may not enjoy Carnival as much as I did. I didn't watch the hairy chest competition or anything like that because I found those all to be a bit embarrassing. I mostly stayed in the pool and ate delicious food. (Not at the same time)

I also didn't notice any drunk people on the cruise and I sailed in the middle of summer! Not that I'd be able to tell. (Remember I'm only 14!)

Some of the kids were a little annoying though.

And in conclusion if you are reading this you shouldn't completely rule out any cruise line. If RCL cruised from SoCal I'd definitely try them. The cruise vacation is what you make it so you should try to make it fun! Don't complain all the time! My mother does this and it ruins everyone's vacation!
