Never again

We went on a cruise on the Fantasy in April a few years ago and we must have hit it just right. Even the CD remarked that there were fewer than 200 children onboard which made for a nice relaxing time. But overall, we haven't been bothered a lot by kids.

This reminds me of a time when my DS was about 6 and we were visiting a friend in NY. The DS was, regretably, acting up while I was in the shower. When I came out my DH and friend were laughing their heads off because the friend had whipped off his belt to pretend he was going to spank the DS with it. Instead of getting scared, the DS asked the DH, "Dad what's he doing?" LOL! The DS had never had a spanking in his life and didn't know that a belt could be used to punish someone. We always used our words to punish our son and never resorted to brute force...ever. The friend was amazed that the DS was more affected by our saying we were disappointed in his behavior and so he wouldn't be able to go to the zoo the next day. The next day the friend was amazed that we struck to what we had said and didn't take the DS to the zoo. That's how we rolled!:D The DS is just finishing his freshman year at the U of Arizona where he's on a full-ride, academic scholarship. Proud to say! :D

There are always problems with people, in general, behaving badly when you have large groups of them in a confined space. Whether they are kids or adults, some people just lose their perspective when on vacation. We just go with the flow and don't let it ruin our vacation. Kids pushing all the buttons on an elevator isn't something that overly concerns us. Kids pushing elderly people...I'd be finding the kid's parents and telling them about it.

I think it's great the OP still wants to cruise...just at another time of year!

This was my parenting style....combined with the "mom" look. I never had to spank my kids. They learned from the time they could understand us that we set the boundries and crossing the boundries would lead to consequenses. They have very rarely crossed the boundries growing up. When they were younger the "look" put a quick stop to any naughty mischief they may have been starting. I think a lot of the time they were more afraid to embarress themselves more than anything else. I spent a lot of time pointing out the poor behavior in other kids telling them that is not how to act, see what a fool they are making themselves out to be. At 17 and 19, I can look back and say that technique worked quite well for us. I can't even begin to tell you how many compliments these kids have received over the years on their behavior from teachers, coaches, bosses, and even complete strangers.

On my last cruise, my wife and I were sitting outside of the casino next to a group of teenagers. One of them filled his mouth up with sunflower seeds and spit them all over me.

I don't think they expected the reaction they got.

I've been a Police Officer for over 25 years. Spitting on me is one of the things you definitely don't want to do. My wife told me afterwards that I had scared her.

So what did you do, since I don't think you had one of the nifty net/bag thing-ies to put over his head? lol

I was on the Liberty for New Years this year. We encountered the same behavior. Never again on a holiday on Carnival. I'm hopeful that my up coming Alaska cruise will redeem the cruise line for me.

LOL.....had to laugh because you are going to the biggest "zoo" in the world, Alaska. You are going when a lot of schools are out for the summer, those cruises are typically FILLED with kids, it is the one cruise itinerary that really keeps a child's interest. I don't think you are in for a "redeeming" experience....I think it will be duplicated, unfortunately.

More details please.

I was pretty upset so I don't remember everything I had said. I know I started with how his parents must be 1st cousins and they should have given more thought to birth control. My wife said I somehow worked his eating paint chips was he was a baby into the conversation.

On a more positive note, this was the 1st time in 17 cruises that something like this happened.

But did you follow proper procedure by first announcing, "Taser!Taser!Taser!" :D Happy retirement brother.

OMG we had a girls adult vacation, and we embraced all the kids. It was a blast. We did not encounter one rude or disrespectful child, maybe it was it was your attitude towards the situation. Just saying.....:D

You must be one of the parents that lets your kids run all over till 7am!!!!!!! Just saying:D

I would loved to have told him to stay calm as the 50,000 volts provided a little "medicine by Edison".

Stay Safe

I learned this years ago....first two weeks of Dec. are very good for NO kids....or under 300 or so......

We cruise out this Sunday.....was told this week is the first official week in Florida with no spring breakers.....(4th week in April).....

The kids do get unruly at times.....they posse up......I don't have any problems....I will tell them to shut up.....I don't like it when they destroy stuff....damage stuff......I got up early one day and played putt putt....smashed ice cream cone in every hole on the course.....crap like that...they need to be whoooooped.

We often cruise this coming week, and yes, spring breakers are gone! Very few children on the cruise...hoping that will still be the case when we board Sunday! And don't get me wrong...we love children, we have 9 grandchildren...love them to death! What we don't love is parenting (or lack of) in this generation.

My other cruises were on school breaks too but I didn't seem to notice annoying kids that much, I hope this one isn't worse.

Unfortunately it is getting to the point that no matter when you cruise there will be kids. Our January cruise on the Magic had so many unruly kids that I was shocked. I asked several of them if they were in school and not one said they were on break. As long as parents keep taking their kids out of school to cruise year round there will be no "less kids" time of the year. I also vented to Carnival and got absolutely no response. I have found that by flying to a distant port or taking a longer cruise the number of children is greatly reduced. I am done cruising out of Galveston.

That is amazing the number of parents that will take there kids out of school for a cruise. IF I asked my parents to take me out of school for a cruise they would still be laughing!!!!

Ditto! I have a young school age child and cannot ever see us taking her out of school for a vacation, especially a cruise. My favorite is the "visiting other cultures is an educational experience." Sorry, but no. Not on a Caribbean cruise.

your kid is not special, he or she is not entitled to special treatment, he or she is not as cute as you think, not as smart as you think, not as well behaved as you believe, and others don't think your spawn are god's gift to civilization.

Speak for your own family...

My kids are ALL that! :p

We've noticed a few kids behaving badly but nothing dangerous or illegal. Usually I just give them the "Mom Stare" or DH, who used to coach basketball, will just shout out, "HEY" and they stop in their tracks.

I was at my granddaughters baseball game last summer and there were 4 teenage girls in front of me spitting sunflower seeds on each other. I told them then had to clean up the mess before they left. Within 5 minutes they all got up and walked away. What is the fasination with spitting on each other? I know we did some crazy things as teenagers but we never did anything to disrespect a human being.
