I always wonder why people say go to another line. It's just like telling smokers to go camping or to an all inclusive. I would never do that. I really am begging posters to stop saying that. I think you are preaching to the wrong poster - solocanadian is a non smoker and very proud of it :D

but your point is well made.;)

My problem with asking a cruise lines policy about anything, from hogging chairs, dress code or smoking--- mean nothing. Everyone is a GUEST on the ship and the employees hardly ever enforce ANY rule.

I am a smoker and try very hard to follow the rules. But I travel on various lines and I was on Nieuw Amsterdam in 2013. After dinner I stepped outside for some air and lo and behold, right there in front of me was an ashtray attached to the railing. So I had a smoke then back to dinner. No one said anything, (a ships officer and two maintenance type people were about 20 feet away) and I am still not sure if that was officially a smoking area. I think maybe it was not!

So I don't think the rules are enforced by anyone so an individual may experience different conditions regardless of what the policy is.

I am guessing that if there was an ashtray actually attached to the railing (as opposed to one just sitting on a table that anyone could have put there ) that you were in a smoking area .

Yes I know that and I was not preaching. What I was objecting to was being told that non smokers should go somewhere else. I would never say that to a smoker and there is no need to tell a non smoker to do it. I have also never attacked someone because they smoke. My character has also been attacked here recently but that's ok because I guess I deserve it for daring to speak. Just to be clear, I'm not speaking of solocanadian that was doing the attacking.

I'm not a smoker and Hal's policy does annoy me, but so far, I haven't had a problem on my balcony with any smoke drifting up or down our way.

If and when that happens, I probably will still sail Hal because it's the line I like. We've only sailed Hal and I don't want to sail another line.

OP: We have cruised quite a bit and always have a balcony cabin, (smoking IS permitted on balconies) and yet in all the times we have cruised we have never been bothered by cigarette smoke coming on to our balcony or bothering us in any way. The casino can be bad, however it seems to have improved in the last few years. The promenade deck very occasionally will have someone smoking on it, but not too often any more. Hope this helps.

My DH is a smoker. He was very intimidated and hurt by the comments of our anonymous verandah neighbor one day as he enjoyed a cigarette on our verandah one afternoon. Goodness, you'd think the neighbor had paid for all the verandah rooms surrounding his stateroom!

That is most unfortunate. Please remember that HAL's policy is that any obnoxious behaviour that is directed at another guest is reason to have you removed from the ship.

It seems to me that all ships have different smoking policies even within the same cruise line. Does anyone know the current policy on the Rotterdam? Especially on the Lanai stateroom deck i.e. lower promenade.

I would like to add my welcome to the HAL forum on Cruise Critic. I think you will find that the information you will receive from this board will provide you with many valuable tips to enhance your cruise experience.

I am not sure that you have received an answer to your question. I do not really have anything to add to what has already been said. My desire to you and other "newbies" who may be lurking is to tell you that from my experience, this is really not that big of an issue. There are far more non-smoking areas on the ship and it is relatively simple to avoid the smoking areas. I realize there is an issue about the verandas and I do not have a solution. For my part, I simply retreat to my room or go to one of the many common areas if need be.

You have selected one of the best cruise lines there is. HAL has so much to offer and I hope you and other newcomers on the forum can take this issue off the table as you prepare for your cruise. Spend your time and effort on reviewing the shore excursion options, deciding what nights to eat in the specialty restaurants and shining up your dancing shoes for your "dancing with the stars" debut rather than worrying about something that may become a non issue.

Again, welcome and Bon Voyage...

I just wanted to clarify OldBoot that your neighbour's comments were inappropriate and you do not have to endure the wrath of another guest. All passengers are expected to demonstrate the utmost respect and consideration toward other passengers. Obnoxious behaviour is not tolerated.

That's a shame. Did your husband try speaking to the neighbour? Oftentimes, direct conversation can totally change and improve a situation.

I am also very sory that your husband had to endure these people .

I have always been blessed (or cursed , depending on the circumstances :) with a thick skin, a big mouth and a total inability to suffer fools gladly . People like those neighbors I either ignore or in my younger days screw with *LOL*

I forget that there are nice people that can feel put out by loudmouths like that.

Hope that you enjoy many more cruises without the drama

I will never understand why people book a cruise on HAL when they are so concerned about where smoking is permitted. Why do they not sail on another line that has no smoking. Tiresome/boring do not describe the way most of us feel when this issue comes up again and again.:p

While I do not ask questions about smoking, the reason we do not sail on another line is that we have our Mariner status to work on and simply don't want to start out anew with another line. Just answering your question.

To be honest, if I was *just* going to do an Alaskan cruise, I would be on Disney. That's the line I know and am comfortable with. However, my running coach and her husband do a series of marathon cruises, including one to Alaska, and I've wanted to go on it for a while. For various reasons, the agency they work with has gotten the better deals - and port times and locations - on HAL, so HAL it is for this cruise.

FWIW, I already have a Disney cruise booked for my February break, and most likely I will be sticking with Disney for any other cruises I do. Partly because of their no smoking allowed on balconies but also because I love pretty much all things Disney and find their ships GORGEOUS and the service second to none. However, I'm keeping my mind open, so who knows. MAYBE I'll be convinced to change for some future cruises.

That is our reason as well. We finally got to 3 star!! Also, we prefer small to midsize ships. I don't know of any other comparable line that has 1300 av. passenger ships.

Everyone I know that has gone Disney loves it. I hope you'll come back and compare the two of time permits.

First off, I am a smoker. I also like to dress for formal night. I also like the designated set time/table for dinner. I like the smaller sized ships around 1200. IN other words I am an older traditional cruiser. HAL fulfills my cruising needs. I see no reason to CHANGE HAL.

I have posted many times if you don't like something on a certain cruiseline, to change to another instead of trying to change the cruiseline to suit your desires. I'm not bashing anyone, I'm only stating MHO. I have sailed Carnival, RCCL, Princess, NCL and Celebrity as well as HAL. I would not choose Carnival again because I didn't like all the crazy wild party atmosphere. Princess ship was just too mammoth for us at 110,000 gt. NCL has their Freestyle cruising (only nothing is free and there is nothing but lines for dinner). Celebrity was closest to HAL but have now changed to almost totally NON-SMOKING.

WHY WOULD I SAIL WITH THESE OTHER LINES, paying upwards of $2000 to do so, when they don't match with what I want in a cruise???? All I'm saying is select a cruiseline you like, don't just pick one and try to change it to your needs.

Happy travels to all!

So you are saying you won't go to another cruise line but others should. Do you see anything odd in that logic? If people did not complain there would still be smoking in offices, theatres etc. I guess you probably think that non smokers should have just gone elsewhere?
