Two completely different songs: Memories and The Way We Were.

The lyrics in CATS song are based on poems by TS Eliot: Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats (1939).

 

"The Way We Were" is the title song to the 1973 movie The Way We Were, starring Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford.[1] The song was written by Alan Bergman and Marilyn Bergman (lyrics) and Marvin Hamlisch (music)

Amazing! The OP was just trying to start a conversation about "What Broadway Shows Would You Like to See on a Cruise" and then some of you come up with this "Grade School" stuff "If you don't like it don't go". Amazing!

I think the responses were invited based on the strongly worded opinion about "Cats" which IMO overshadowed the intended message of the question regarding alternative shows somewhat buried near the end of the commentary.

I really don't want to see Broadway shows on cruise ships.

I don't want dinner and theater as my evening on a ship. :o

A valid point. I think there was a bit of "Tongue in Cheek Satire" in the whole thing. It's just too bad some people are quick with sarcasm before they try to figure out the intended message. For the record, I thought "Cats" thoroughly stunk! I'm smart enough, as I'm sure the OP is as well, to know that no one can force me to see it again, don't need someone to point that out to me.

The production shows are not among the primary reasons we cruise and we in fact rarely get to a ship's company show anymore. We actually walked out of "Hairspray" twice on two separate cruises on Oasis. We thought maybe it was us the first time so we gave it a second shot with the next cruise, but with the same result the second time around. Just wasn't a good show for us. But it didn't affect our time on board - both Oasis cruises were great.

I agree.

 

Words are different, melody is different. Only "similarity" is the word Memory/memories.

 

Anyway, back to our regular programming.

As someone who thinks Royal Caribbean is getting it right with there big shows and likes the idea of a truncated broadway musicals on ships, it was with horror and dread that I read this notice on there site. There are so many great shows with wonderfull music that would be so great to see on board while I am not the biggest fan of Chicago it is a real show with some plot and some good music also Hairspray is a lot of fun with a thin plot. Cats on the other hand is painfull in every aspect(yea, yea I know it was a big hit) the only good song is borrowed from another show, there is no plot ,stupid songs and well I could go on but I was wondering what show would you like to see on board old or new.The best would be the ones with the most hit songs and thin plots also what shows would you avoid like the Cats I mean plague.

 

I'm wondering why you didn't post this question on the RCI board.

Charfan9 thanks for getting it I love cruise Critic but I get tierd of the same old ques. (how do I get to the port) so I try to start threads of a more general nature and try to use humor to start some real feedback on cruising, shows ,flying and any other whacky thing I can think of.As far as these ''masters of the bledding obvious'' ''hey man thanks I thought some one on the ship would force me at gun point to see Cats'' ( I would take the bullet). Ithink some people love crusing so much(as do I) they take any kind of criticism or mockery in a personal way(passion is like that)As far as my wondering what show you would like to see ,thanks to those who had some ideas . My thing is that I like all popular music (even if it is old ) so it just stuns me that someone would pick CATS over Rodgers and Hammerstien or Irving Berlin (to me the greatest) just because it is more contemporary although CATS is also getting long in the tooth(ouch) . I know there is no accounting for taste (especially bad) when it comes to music and all things that are subjective but when it comes to CATS it just to easy and obvious.It sure ain't no ''Annie get your gun''

The Broadway shows are nice for those who can't go to live theater because of the distance from a major city. The abridged versions give these folks a chance to experience live theater. For those of us who live near a major city, no one is forcing us to view these versions. But, it is a wonderful opportunity for everyone else,

I would go to see a revival. To add to another poster, how about...

Oh My Heck! I'd pay for a suite for myself to see Book of Mormon on a cruise ship...Can't go wrong with the guys from South Park!!

 

The Producers would be, well, interesting. But, I think the subject matter of the play wouldn't work for a captive audience ;-)

Thank you, Last year the local theater company put on Sweeney Todd and was offering a raffle for the Show and Dinner. I suggested that the Dinner should be meat pies, but they didn't want to go that far.

I enjoy cruising because it's something that is totally different in my life. I get to see the ocean out of my window every day for a week. I eat "out" for all three meals. I go to foreign places. I can go to some kind of show every night that doesn't involve a remote control. My wife and I go to the theater every night during the cruise because it's something we never do at home. Some of the shows are good and some not so but we enjoy them all. So, lighten up and enjoy yourself. If the MDR serves lima beans, I won't eat them. If the theater has a show I just don't want to watch, I'll go to the casino!

Slept through Cats on Broadway, was bored silly watching the DVD, and don't plan on watching it again on our spring cruise. I'd prefer a show with tunes I can sing along to in my head during and after the show.

Two of my all time favorites are "Phantom of the Opera" (seen it 6 times) and "Fiddler on the Roof" (seen that about 10 times). When I saw the "Producers", I laughed so hard my stomach hurt, it is very typical Mel Brooks. But the most memorable theater experience was seeing Yule Brenner in a live performance of "The King and I" at the "Pantages" Theater in Hollywood. "Auntie Maime" would be a good show too.
