Golden Drydock

I see that the Golden after the dry dock is going to Los Angeles for a costal cruise to Vancouver and then back to San Francisco to start the Alaska season. Interesting schedule. Wonder if the crew that was on board will stay or will there be a new crew. There in dry dock until April 30th.

Hope that people will post photos possibly before the dry dock and then after so that we can see the changes. If you were on the last cruise and have photos please post them.

Tom:)

Most of the cruise implied to us that they would be staying on and a lot of them were going to be doing duties that were more like watchmen/women. They seem to be looking forward to two weeks in San Francisco before their tours continue.

We were also on this cruise. This was my 50th cruise on Princess, so I was definitely looking forward to the cruise.

Was told there were contractors on the ship during our 10 days, but they were mainly working in the engine room area. The Maitre d' also told us the buffet area would be redone like the Star Princess.

The crew will also be onboard, like was previously posted. Of course there are those that have their contracts end during the dry dock, but all the workers we talked too were going to be on the ship. They were looking forward to their time in San Francisco.

We are on the May 2 sailing, at least we don't have to wait for rooms to be done up, LOL. Hope it is a great cruise. I have never been out to the west coast.:)

You are going to have a great time. Now that they are modifying the dinky buffet, the biggest drawback to the Golden (IMO) will be fixed.

Anybody going on the Golden after the dry dock please post photos so that we can see the changes and tell us what you think.

This will be helpful for any of us going on the Golden later.

Thanks!

been on the regal. if horizon is like that it would be great. interesting to see whether there will be a larger international café as well loved that.

expecting awful beds as usual and toilets that don't flush well. I can handle that.

Here's my photos of the Golden Princess dry dock in San Francisco. It was a "short" walk from the San Francisco MUNI'S "T" lines Mariposa stop where there is a small park and fishing pier. Another plus it was not real windy so the weather was pleasant. I took some photos that show a section on the top deck torn up and that's the remodeling of the buffet. They are also replacing carpets, remodeling the casino and photo department. As I was taking photos there was a crane that was moving along towards the aft of the ship. You'll also see a yellow tarp that covers the bottom of the aft part of the ship where they are doing some work.

Now that we have some dry dock photos the next step is to have photos posted showing the finished work inside.

Enjoy the photos...Tom

We spoke to our dining room staff on the last sea day lunch and they said they would be moving the all the dining room tables and chairs to the Canaletto dining room and the chairs would be reupholstered. The silverware, vases, sugar holders polished, etc. Possible new carpet in all dining rooms.

They said they would only have 8 hour days and could go off ship after their shifts. They were looking forward to the lighter work load during the dry dock.

We were on Pacific last year from Tahiti to Vancouver. When everyone was off at Vancuver on May 3 many contractors and supplies were loaded and they headed to Victoria for a 10 day drydock. There were a few more contracts than usual that ended at Vancouver but for the most part most crew remained as most of the contractors ate and slept on the ship while in drydock.

Golden's big 2009 drydock was at Victoria as well. We boarded in Vancuver the day after drydock ended. It was definitely the worst cruise we have been on for general disorganization but we didn't let it bother us. (That was our fifth Princess cruise and we just completed our 24th Princess cruise last month.) There had been a lot of changes and the work was barely finished. Carpet installers went to Alaska along with us!

I've been shopping Alaska cruises. Maybe I'll have to give the Golden a second look!

We would love to have you join us plus San Francisco is a great city to visit either before or after your cruise. You'll enjoy sailing under the famous Golden Gate Bridge plus we have a new cruise terminal to enjoy.

Thanks for the excellent dry dock photos. I would like to see some photos of the finished work.

I'll be on the ship on the July 11th cruise.

Thank you. Actually, I just sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge a couple weeks ago on the Crown Princess. I went on a coastal as a birthday present to myself. Sailing under the GG Bridge was on my list of things I wanted to do. We sailed under the bridge at dawn and it was awesome. My friend said that morning was worth the price of the entire cruise. It was a great day. We spent 8 hours touring the city. I'd been there before, but there's always more there than you can possibly see in a day. Now, I might look into the Golden with her new drydock features!

Here's a picture of the Crown docked at the new SF terminal. View from the top of Coit Tower.

I wonder what Golden is doing next summer? Her schedule shows that she arrives in LA on 16 May 2016, and that she's back Down Under in the fall, but June-September is still blank.

The casino is being redone with Asian market games an a high-roller / VIP area is being added. I'd take that as a hint she'll be in Asia for that time, possibly privately chartered like the Diamond (or was it the Sapphire) was last summer.
